Albion land Vokes

Sam Vokes Sam Vokes

Albion are poised to seal the signing of centre forward Sam Vokes from Wolves.

The Welsh international watched tonight's FA Cup win against Newcastle at The Amex from the directors' box.

An announcement is expected from the club on Monday confirming the capture of the 22-year-old Welsh international.

The Argus first broke news of Albion's interest in Vokes at the beginning of January.

The former Bournemouth marksman recently completed his fifth loan spell away from Molineux at Championship rivals Burnley.

Vokes fits the bill as the robust partner for Craig Mackail-Smith boss Gus Poyet has been looking for.

He could go straight into the side for Tuesday's visit to arch rivals Crystal Palace.

Interesting. Must admit to being fairly ignorant of Vokes' ability / potential but he is a name and at 22 still has plenty of improvement time too.

If he does join, welcome aboard the Gus Bus, Sam.

Not really done a lot having signed for Wolves from Bournemouth and then passed round various Championship sides without making any real impression. Has played for Wales and got a couple of goals.

It may well be the step up from League 1 with Bournemouth to Prem with Wolves was a step too far.

Can't see how it will all work with CMS as we shall have to change the shape of our play. We shall see.

You can see now why the club wants to unload Hoskins to Bournemouth.

The only other player we have signed from Wolves is Bennett so if he shapes up as well as he did then we have a great signing!!

Not a prolific scorer, but worth a chance.
We're not getting enough shots and esp shots on target according to the stats so Sammy might help create that edge ? Another plus is we wont lose him to the WNC each year !

That might be Argus hoping we don't notice if they guessed wrong. Vokes and his agent were at the game but that does not prove anything. When the club announce it then we can all get excited.

If this comes off, I wonder whether Bournemouth will come back again re Hoskins. We'll be starting to get a bit over loaded with strikers soon. Think we should at least expect our money back though, which I think was £500k?

Poyet has stated Bournemouth made am offer for Hoskins which was turned down and that they did not want to sell there best players. So no to your question, hope that applies to Noone.

Did anyone else see the shocking highlights from ITV? All they could focus on was how unlucky Newcastle were not to win...what an effin joke! We deserved that, especially in the 2nd half, we dominated.

Unlucky...my arse!

Yeah, completely agree. Match reports in the paper have been a joke as well. They had a few good chances, as you would expect and we rode our luck occasionally, but for the most part I thought we more than matched them. We played very well, but the most exciting part is you get the feeling we have a lot more to come.

yeah i agree with your summing up seagull 31 we were very good and so were newcastle to be fair but i think overall we deserved something from the game although i'm not sure if the win was deserved, dont worry about the highlights on tv the albion site will show extended highlights with either johnny cantor or a.n. other commentating with bob booker summing up well worth the money and generally biased in albions favour i can't wait till tonight to watch the proceedings over again SEAGULLS.

Cant argue with the coverage too much Seagull Joe.....Live on ESPN, lead match on ITV highlights programme and live commentary on national radio. Think we are getting pretty decent exposure (and a bit of money too). Pardew's comments were very fair as were Gordon Strachan's on ITV last night. Having watched a bit of the ESPN coverage last night on Sky+, still believe Chris Waddle to be the worst match summariser in tv history. His analysis is extremely poor and often incomprehensible. Just glad I didn't have to listen to him live. Talking of poor coverage on ITV last night - arguably the shock of the round was League 2 Crawley winning away to a team in the top 6 of the Championship (Hull). Not mentioned atall in the lead headlines and then hidden away halfway through in about two minutes of "highlights" - did not even get discussed by the panel. In the last round Crawley beat Bristol City in another shock result - one 10 second clip of the goal and that was it.

Pleased that we won, listened to the first half on Radio 5 live and comments made were in line with my decision not to attend,Brighton backs to the wall soaking up pressure, not an entertaining match.
On watching highlights on TV noted our goal was deflected in also Newcastle had a cert penalty ignored so we seemed to have used up any luck that was going, hopefully we will draw a top team away to bring in even more cash which will very useful for our new signing.

I didn't really understand the logic of Seagull31's post either.....of course Brighton were on the back foot for a lot of the game - they were playing a Top 6 Premiership team. Brighton played increasingly well as the game went on and scored a well made, albeit deflected goal. A number of outstanding individual performances and a superb team performance. And we won - thought it was well worth attending the game!

Agree with comments on the ITV coverage last night. If Strachan and Warnock are the best they can employ thanks heavens for the BBC. As for press coverage, did stumble on the Sunday Telegraph - not my usual but excellent report on game and great picture of Wonderwill - surely the most coveted player in the championship.

Tony Bloom, Gus Poyet, thank you for everything you have done for our club, but PLEASE PLEASE do not sell Craig Noone, do not dismantle our team, we are so progressive off the field and we need to replicate that on the field. We must not keep selling our best players. If it was £3m+ and to the Premiership, we could understand that, but to another Championship side.... for me that is unacceptable.

Vokes looked great as a young lad at Bournemouth. With some regular football and a bit of TLC hopefully Gus can bring out his potential. He's the kind of striker we need anyway, though I'll be interested to see how he fits in when he plays. Gus loves 4-3-3 so maybe he'd play CMS out wide, who knows.

Not too bothered about the coverage as we'd only have more clubs sniffing around the likes of Noone. And I doubt Crawley fans would want Matt Tubbs plastered all over the back pages!

This exactly,.. it was a typical David and Goliath contest, and yes in the last 25 mins or so we were by far the most dominant team, the goal was superbly crafted, Adam E-A was a man mountain, his fitness seems to be top drawer......... great evening.... roll on Anfield.

Yes, and having listening to the full game commentary, the highlights and comments did seem to give a very unblanced impression. Worse than that was the pundit's obsession with Newcastle's missing African players. No mention at all of The Albion's other potential match-winner, Lualua, not playing! I remember listening to the commentary of the 1983 cup game at Anfield and 'Wellie-Boots' scoring, with what I remember as, a vital solo effort. Can anybody confirm, or correct that memory?
