Noone stays to boost Gus

Craig Noone is staying with Albion Craig Noone is staying with Albion

Albion boss Gus Poyet has revealed his relief at keeping hold of Craig Noone after strengthening his defence on transfer deadline day with a double loan signing from West Brom.

Left-back Joe Mattock and right-back Gonzalo Jara Reyes have joined the Seagulls for the rest of the season, Chile international Jara Reyes for the second time.

But it was a text from Noone, confirming Cardiff had failed in their persistent attempts to land the winger, which pleased Poyet the most. The only departure instead was striker Will Hoskins to Sheffield United in another loan deal for the rest of the season.

The Argus understands Cardiff made at least one improved offer for Noone after a bid of about £450,000 for the Liverpudlian, regarded by Albion as insulting, was rejected earlier in the January transfer window. Poyet told The Argus: “It was the most difficult situation we’ve had for a while, more difficult than Benno (Elliott Bennett and Norwich) last January. I’m absolutely delighted he is with us. As you can imagine he is already talking about Liverpool (FA Cup).

“It went to the wire. The last I heard, at two or three o’clock in the afternoon, it was still going on and then afterwards I got a text from Nooney to say it was finished. It’s relief and happiness.”

Great effort to keep Nooney at the club - by Craig himself, Gus and, I would imagine Big Tony Bloom. What a great time to be an Albion fan!

so do we assume Nooney turned the deal down rather than the club? Methinks I see a new contract on the horizon.
Made his own way to Smellhurst last night to support the lads even though he wasn't involved. How many would do that? A great asset to the club on and off the pitch. Delighted we kept them.

Reading in between the lines Cardiff must have been in talks with Nooney, which means the bid was accepted !!??????. In which case it would appear that Nooney said NO - SUPERB !!!!! Can anyone throw some light on the whole affair ??????? I have a real gut feeling that the rest of the season is going to be un bloody believable.

If it was Noone who texted to end the discussion, does that by extension mean that the club did eventually accept an offer? Full marks to the lad if that's what happened and he said no - whether it was for footballing or financial reasons, I don't much care. Pleased to still have him.

Going to a new club is a big step and I am sure it is not always about the money. Noone would probably not have been first choice at Cardiff, at that price, just a very good back up player option.

It was either stay with us as an established member of the squad, or venture into the unknown.

I hope the fans continue to adore Noone, to make his mind up to stay permanently. He has been a class act on the field since he joined, and the destroyer of Championship fullbacks. This is reflected by opposing teams since putting 2 defenders on him, which should free up room for Vokes, CMS and the on-fire Buckley!

I don't believe that Gus and TB accepted the bid for Noone. Gus has always said that he would not stand in the way of any player that had the chance of improving his prospects. I reckon that Nooney went along out of curiosity and came to the conclusion that the green green grass of Cardiff was not so green as that of The Albion. I for one am so glad that he chose us.

It is amazing that he's not going. The only other info was a tweet by Mr Naylor in the small hours last night saying that he'd heard from a Cardiff contact the final bid was 1.2m rising to 1.5m, and was rejected. Although nooney texting Poyet does put a slightly different light on it. Either way, fantastic news. If Vokesy can be the player we need then we could be onto exciting things.

NOBODY BOOK ANY HOLIDAYS OVER THE PLAY OFF PERIOD!!!!

That's the best news I've heard this month. Brilliant, on his day Craig is the most dangerous player in the league. I have seen no-one else in this division who can do the things Craig does with the ball. Great entertainer, great potential, great news. If it was Craig himself who turned them down then he deserves all the plaudits going. If it was TB and GP who refused the offer, then well done guys. So re-assuring to retain our best players. The future is blue and white !!!!!

He wouldn't have been speaking to them if the clubs hadn't agreed a fee. Imagine if CN had said he wanted to sign for them and then Cardiff said here's £100,00, your player wants to sign for us.. Doesn't happen that way.
That said, nice work Albion, we now have a player who's been given the option by his current employer and decided to stay. so his commitment is unquestioned. Bit of a risk, but a lovely return on the bet!

All speculation of course. For all we know, their may be a release clause in his contract if Albion are offered over a certain fee, thus tying Gus' hands. Delighted he chose to stay though, it speaks volumes.

Elliot Bennet was well aware of what Norwich were offering him, despite all offers being rejected. It doesn't always happen that a fee is agreed between clubs before the player (or his agent) starts discussing terms. If Noone was tempted to go by Cardiff, it would bring more pressure on the deal to go through.
I don't know what actually happened, but I wouldn't conclude that a fee was accepted from snippets of info that might suggest it.

Good news on the Noone front still feel he needs to either score a few goals and make more assists ie; like Buckley is doing at present, not yet the complete player.
See Gus is 10/1 on for the Leeds job?

Who'd go work under Ken Bates at Leeds ?

Shameful dismissal of Grayson, a guy that's done very well at a club with a big name but now very small pockets.

Wouldn't touch Leeds with a barge pole and the next poor guy in that job basically has to secure Promotion to avoid the sack, and do it this season with the current squad.

No chance !

Are you going for the cryogenic suspended animation option, cybergully?
You could arrange to be revived for all the big matches involving Albion, such as Champions League Finals :-)

A very short-sighted decision, PBTB.
They've had a difficult December and January, with 11 points from a possible 27, but we are only on 13 from 27, and parting company with Gus would be unthinkable.
Who'd work under Ken Bates?
There will be plenty of applicants, unless of course there is someone lined up for the position.

Answer 1)

What? Like a fair weather supporter? No! It's just that "Brighton till I die" is far too soon and lacks commitment!!! Hence.....

Brighton even after I am dead!!!

Answer 2)

(Now that I've had a look at Wikipedia and as long as I'm not just wheeled out for the big games) I like your thinking GG, I could go to all the away games at croydon where I would always be assured of a frosty reception, although then again better not, after all and not for the first time, things did get just a little heated last night. Having said that you did say big games and croydon won't make the Champions League. I do love Brighton though and there is currently no cure, so if that's what it takes, bring it on.

I understand exactly the point you were making about Bates, PBTB, and it never ceases to amaze me that managerial positions in similar circumstances are soon filled.
A prime example is Steve Keene at Blackburn after Big Sam was unceremoniously dumped.
Leeds could also promote from within, but they don't deserve any candidates the calibre of Grayson.

Two points.

1. Noone - Made up that he is still here and frankly I don't care whether Noone was talking to them. It must have been a tough decision though. Go to Cardiff as a squad player, watch his new team mates play at Wembley (he is cup tied) but have a good chance of promo to the premiership. Or stay at Brighton and accept he will be rotated with Buckley and LuaLua. When all three are fit and playing well, it's hard too pick between them. Buckley would be number 1 in my eyes, given his ability to score goals. Noone has all the tricks but like LuaLua, his final ball isn't the best.

2. Leeds managerial vacancy - I'd bet a smalll wager that Mr Poyet is high on the Leeds wanted list, by Bates, players and fans alike. His connection with Leeds, their fan base, history and ppotential does make it an attractive proposition, even with Bates at the helm. I don't think Poyet will leeave for Leeds, but I bet Poyet and Tano have discussed (and dismissed) it.

Just been on the Yorkshire Post and they have a list/poll of candidates for the Leeds position, and Gus isn't on it (phew - low profile). Warnock and Strachan by far the favourite amongst the fans. Others mentioned are Lee Clarke, Billy Davies, Alan Curbishley, Zola, Sven, Di Matteo, Lucas radebe, Sean O'Driscoll
