Albion want to sign a Premier League midfielder on loan.
Boss Gus Poyet has not finished with his squad strengthening after the transfer window for permanent deals closed this week.
He will target a top flight midfielder when the loan window opens next week and, if the circumstances are right, could sign another striker to compensate for the temporary departure of Will Hoskins to Sheffield United.
The recent emergence of 17-year-old Jake Forster-Caskey has made Poyet's long-standing desire to land a midfielder less urgent but it remains on the agenda, along with forward back-up, as long as the loans are for the rest of the season.
Poyet, referring to Forster-Caskey’s breakthrough, revealed to The Argus: “It didn’t make us desperate for that position but there is still a possibility we will bring in one when the loan window opens. But it’s got to be someone from the Premier League, if not we won’t.
“There was a moment as well when we lost a striker (Hoskins) and that wasn't the idea. Maybe we will bring someone in there but that will depend on a specific situation or someone special. It's not as important as the one we were trying to bring in the middle.
"When you have a player for three months you know him so well that it will give you a chance to make a decision for next year. I think it's great options, long-term.
"The short-terms go so quickly. When they start getting used to the team and the way we play they are gone, so I would prefer if we get one next week it is to the end of the season."
Poyet has already drafted in centre forward Sam Vokes from Wolves and West Brom fullbacks Joe Mattock and Gonzalo Jara Reyes on loan for the rest of the season.
All three are in contention for today's home game against Leicester as Albion attempt to stretch their unbeaten run in 2012 to eight matches.

Hope we are going to loan some of our players out to cut the wage bill. Still a bit bemused by Hoskins going.
