It's madness, says Poyet, as Albion grab late winner

Gus Poyet tonight savoured more late drama - and a "crazy" second half at The Amex.

The Albion boss saw his side make it 13 points from five games in 2012 when Will Buckley converted a Vicente cross to beat Leicester 1-0.

Buckley's strike in front of the North Stand came as the game ticked into six added minutes.

Jermine Beckford (Leicester) and Matt Sparrow (Albion) had already received straight red cards.

Leicester midfielder Neil Danns joined them in the final moments for a second yellow.

Poyet said: "We knew it would be very difficult, with the quality and strength of Leicester and the quantity of players they have who have played at the highest level, so we needed to be very good.

"The first half was a proper football game, which I like to see. Not too many chances, two very good teams, organised and difficult to break down.

"The second half was crazy, absolute madness, but at the end in these kind of games you need to take the points."

Beckford was dismissed on the advice of an assistant referee after approaching the grounded Lewis Dunk.

Poyet reviewed footage of the incident with his opposite number Nigel Pearson after the game.

The Albion boss said: "I didn't see it during the game. The first surprise was the referee gave the free-kick and then he flagged. Afterwards (on video) it didn't look that bad."

Matt Sparrow could miss the FA Cup tie at Liverpool after being sent-off for a foul on Ben Marshall but Poyet hinted the club might appeal.

He said: "I don't know what the outcome is going to be.

"If it was a two-footed tackle, wrong, because it was clear it was one, then we'll see what they say."

I don't care that I've just posted it on the Buckley glory thread, it deserves to be said again:

To all those that have questioned Vicente's commitment to the cause, thought his contract should be torn up, believed he was here just taking the Albion's money and not fussed about playing, and doubted he would ever be fit again, I hope you are enjoying a nice meal of humble pie tonight.

He may only have been on for a short amount of time, but he really made his mark. The pass for Buckley was world-class, and the way he ran towards us in the North Stand was a joy to behold.

Say what you like about his fitness, mental state, or ambition, but that guy was the reason we won today. Great, great finish by Buckers, but the build-up play by Vicente made it possible.

Buckley cost £1million; Cardiff offered £1.25 million for Noone, so how much is Buckers worth then with his capacity to score goals...match winning goals too?
Over £2 million?

Another perfect weekend, we're only six points off of the 2nd place auto spot, occupied by the ever shrinking sickly Stains who have secured only 6 points from the last 6 lge games.
Tremendously close race for the play off spots is wide open to many clubs, but realistically what seemed like a complete impossibility of auto promotion for many clubs is now firmly back on the cards.
Four games down the road from here who knows what the table will look like then ?

I think we are in for an interesting end to the season and who knows what will happen. This division is still pretty open. I think Gus has been extremely astute with his signings as the squad is now potentially strong in all areas. AB still seems to divide the fans but obviously does the job that Gus wants him to do. I would like to see us play with two proper forwards at least at home. Anyone else worried that CMS may be losing heart ?

In the absence of any tangible prognosis for Vicente, speculation about his motives, commitment, and psychology was inevitable.
There have also been a few light-hearted attempts at humour, none of them malicious.
We should draw a line under all of that, and appreciate the exceptional talent that Vicente brings to the side.
While it seems unlikely that he will play for ninety minutes, or on a regular basis, his contribution can clearly have a major influence on our season.

Here here. If there's one thing worse than people moaning its people crowing over the moaners when eventually something goes their way. The former should learn some patience; the latter some humility. Alternatively just shut up and enjoy the moment!

Fantastic goal - created by Vicente - finished superbly by Buckley (who else?) - to win an absorbing match.

The only downside, for me is the continued failure by the midfield players not being alert to CMS' runs. Just before he was substituted, I saw him gesticulating in total frustration at another failed opportunity by a midfield player to pick him out. CMS should have been on the pitch with Vicente as I'm sure the extra attacking impetus and invention would have suited him perfectly, and what better time to get him scoring again.
Until Vicente came on, there was a total lack of creativity from midfield. most of the passes go out to the wings.

OK the team played well defensively, and it was a highly competitive and entertaining game, with a great finish to it, but we are crying out for intelligent passes FORWARD from midfield to CMS. At last we got it from Vicente - a touch of class with a great finish from Buckley, but CMS was not there to PROFIT from the EXTRA SPACE and SERVICE.”

Also I thought Vokes was brought in to partner CMS not Barnes?!!!
I would feel totally p***ed off if i was CMS. All season he's run his guts off, foraging alone, chasing lost causes, without complaining. Now as soon as we get more forward players on the field, he is the one making way for them! Totally unfair in my book.

We have looked a much better side at the back since big Pete has taken over in goal, the defence looks much more comfortable and so do i when watching, Casper's flapping for crosses etc had me nervous every time.
Vincente is different gravy watching from the east stand right in line with the cross he made for the goal was world class.
I thought Gus was brave today doing a Blackpool making 3 subs and going for the win it needed something like that to change the game, i was dissapointed with Leicester after all the millions spent by Sven with a decent manager they should have steam rollered this divison.
Feel a bit for CMS the goals will come just needs one to go in off a backside or something

I agree Vince, I think Vincente could be the ideal player to provide ammo for CMS. He's one of the few midfielders who looks forward first. Would also like to see CMS partner Vokes. For me Navs is not creative enough, especially alongside Bridcutt. Both are holding midfielders and are not very good in the final third. We only need one of them on the pitch.
Noone, Buckley, Vincente, Vokes and CMS could be an interesting attacking option. Wonder if we'll ever see them on the pitch together ? I also think El Abd is better than Dunk and would do better alongside Greer. Then Reyes and Mattock could fill the full-back spots

In the "who should play instead of " debate, I was a little puzzled by Navarro starting ahead of Caskey.
I think Caskey has a more forward looking midfield brain versus Navarro's defensive holding style.
Perhaps Gus is trying to protect Caskey from too much too soon, but for me he's a creative option that Navarro isn't .

I think you answer your own comment Pressboy, Gus needs to protect such a young talent. not just protect but also keep him keen. Plenty more time for him, Vicente today showed we have a better option but JFC's time is nigh, an excellent understudy.

I was pretty happy with today's performance.

We didn't start too well but then once we settled into the game we looked good and we were looking very threatening going forward, mainly through Matty Sparrow. The last 20 mins of the 1st half we were all over them and should've scored, especially with the headed opportunity from Barnesy. I think he was in 2 minds what to do - go for goal or head it to CMS, and he ended up doing neither. Ash, had some very frustrating moments today, but then also looked very good at times as well.

GG continues to be captain fantastic at the back - some of the challenges he puts in are world class and he's making some decent passes too.

I thought our new players looked good and Mattock looks very comfortable on the ball.

Vicente was the difference today, we needed his class and hopefully we will see it many more times this season, as he will make a massive difference and, who knows, could be the key to promotion.

Gus has said Navarro is one of the most football-intelligent players in the league, so obviously is inclined to use him - but apart from one or two positions, i.e. Greer, Brezovan, CMS, Dunk etc - I really think Gus is inclined to rotate according to who he thinks will be most effective, in form etc.

Very many valid comments above. Certainly if we continue to have the lowest shots on goal figure for The Championship we'll come unstuck at times - we seem to have stepped back again on this count. Great though to see the pitch NOT being watered before the match for a change - less slipping around and no injuries for BHA. Incisive forward passes from the midfield would certainly make us an even better team and really able to properly challenge the top sides in the division

Gus signed a player with a reputation for being injured, where previous coaching staff had claimed that part of the issue was physiological. He then comes in gets injured after just a few minutes of football. So it is no wonder that some people started asking questions especially with all the constant promised comebacks, will he won't he type chat that is reported in the argus. I stand by me comment though - most people seem to have treated the whole situation in a light hearted way. Incidentally, I don't think asking the club to explain what is wrong with him would have been as much of a crime as you seem to imply!

I do think midfield is the final piece of the puzzle to resolve. Rumours of a prem loan signing I hear? Even without that perm any two from Caskey, Vicente, Dicker and Reyes in central midfield and we'll not go far wrong. Buckley and CMS wide and Vokes up front. Bridcutt holding. And that still leaves Noone and KLL to provide alternative wide attacking options. Exciting times indeed.

Yep - north west end lower concourse - understaffed, out of food, tills not open/ manned and it's 0 degrees Celsius and the fans want hot drinks and food in a not quite full stadium - not too much too ask is it? Hopefully once the extra 8,000 fans are in The Amex Azure will have it all sussed. The amounts of money lost from people giving up buying or bothering to buy food/ drinks is clearly far more than it would cost them to get some more staff in. It lets the stadium down

Always nervous, still waiting for us to piece it together. Swansea is the style of play we are trying to emulate, and if this is the end result, I am looking forward to it.

Each game is a flip of a coin at the mo, but I will take all the lucky results just to extend our season.

It is also a little painful but that’s football, I can live with it.

Fascinating season, can’t keep my eyes off the table and all the other results.

Agree, the catering after a promising start is heading down hill, little or no hot food available at half time, timing issues here I think.
It lets the stadium down
Bloody hell ! The moaning about catering has spread here now ! Thought it was just the NSC nuggets who spent life moaning and complaining about such small issues ! It's so boring !!! Me, I go to watch the football , call me crazy but I thought that's what the stadium was for ???

All those home cup draws to help us settle into our Grand Design of a new home, the tie at 'Pool, the signing of £m+ players and the sublime if occasional cameos from world class Vicente + the great quality of food, drink, merchandise (inevitably award-winning!!!) programmes and the ever increasing camaraderie im enjoying from the growing list of people I seem to know at the footy is making for an incredible feel good factor....and I don't think our footy has reached anywhere near its peak yet either!

How's it for you guys?
Always nervous, still waiting for us to piece it together. Swansea is the style of play we are trying to emulate, and if this is the end result, I am looking forward to it.

Each game is a flip of a coin at the mo, but I will take all the lucky results just to extend our season.

It is also a little painful but that’s football, I can live with it.

Fascinating season, can’t keep my eyes off the table and all the other results.
Every home match now is so much more than just a game of football,it's a whole community experience, before,du
ring, and after the game. The buzz is fantastic, atmosphere awesome. And our football style I wouldn't change for anything. I watched the West Ham Millwall game at the Amex, such predictable rubbish, the only thing keeping West Ham at the top is the money spent for a quick return. Big Sam will be gone when they are back in the premiership. I for one don't think we have been lucky with results,I personally think our style just baffles the opposition, our passing game is alien to most, others are more comfortable and cope with the the long ball up to a target man. I for one know which brand I prefer. What a fantastic experience this first year at the Amex has been.

On another note;
Whilst Poyet is no doubt a top manager he will eventually leave us at some point. this much is inevitable. However, its all very well appointing one class manager but the trick to success is appointing two class managers in a row. If I were Tony Bloom I would constantly have a short list of the top up an coming managers in the country. Just in case, you know. If Poyet were to leave its not the end of the world. I would simply appoint his good friend roberto Di Matteo as his sucessor (if he can be persuaded to leave Chelsea). He worked wonders at West Brom and they were silly to sack him. We should also be in a position now whereby we are a big enough club to do our own poaching of managers. MK Dons manager is class. So too in my opinion is Lee Clark of Huddersfield. Or how about a cheeky bid for David Moyes of Everton? Everton used to be a big club but Moyes must be frustrated to have virtually no money to spend and working on a shoe string budget. How about a fresh challenge? Everton are the past, Brighton are the future. You create your own history in life. And by creating history you become a "big club".

re the Vicente issue - I think as this progressed more people were taking a light-hearted view of it, ie Mark5 and his 'hologram' comment; made me chuckle!

But there were a few that said some things that were completely unjust, such as MBTS's 'I hope he hangs his head in shame when he walks into training'; that was a shameful comment and I gave Mark the criticism he deserved for that.

I think there are very few, if any, professional footballers that don't actually want to play football and I am pretty sure that Vicente is not one of them.

And pressboxteaboy - if you are doing that on the Echo site, then leave it out, it's pathetic.

He may only have been on for a short amount of time, but he really made his mark. The pass for Buckley was world-class, and the way he ran towards us in the North Stand was a joy to behold.

Say what you like about his fitness, mental state, or ambition, but that guy was the reason we won today. Great, great finish by Buckers, but the build-up play by Vicente made it possible.
i think people just wanted to see him playing BECAUSE of his undoubted class, its so frustrating to have a man with that kind of talent sitting in the physios room constanstly. That said if he plays now until the end of the season we could seriously be looking at a shot at promotion and his sick note label would soon be forgotten. come on you seagulls!!!!!!

Four games down the road from here who knows what the table will look like then ?
It is very exciting, glad we have the momentum now. I'm afraid I don't quite see it as you do though - we are fighting for 6th place, very hard to see anymore than that (and that's fine with me, if we get in there who knows). Automatic promotion would need, based on points to date and previous seasons, around 84 points. That would mean 2.3 points a game for the rest of the season, which just ain't gonna happen in this division! We'd be unlucky to miss out on the playoffs with 75 points, that means 1.76 points a game... Tough in this division, but doable... Things can obviously change, but at the moment it's hard to see anyone currently in the playoffs, except Middlesbrough, falling out. That leaves Leeds, Reading, Hull all chasing it along with us (I'm not looking below us!)

Maybe he has morphed.

The club is going from strength to strength, with the squad evolving as the funds(budget constraints)become available from income. We are able to keep players and only sell if they want to go and the price is right, and bring in quality players.Whatever happens this year there will be more changes with loan to buy players and permanent deals in the summer and unfortunately a few that helped us get Promotion to the Championship will go.

While it seems unlikely that he will play for ninety minutes, or on a regular basis, his contribution can clearly have a major influence on our season.
Yes, I must confess that I almost fell off my seat when the 'real life Vicente' came on and had to rub my eyes at the wondrous vision before me! His contribution for the time he was on was superb and his pass for Buckleys winner first class. Will we now see him more regularly? I hope so, and I really hope that my well documented thoughts about him are swept aside by regularly witnessing the talent we all know he has. If so, I may have to hang my head in shame, and leave these forums, being cast out into the wilderness for ever doubting This man and his committment.........

I thought we thoroughly deserved our win today. Despite some off the comments to the contrary, we passed better and had more shots on goal than Leicester who are nevertheless a classy side and play a similar style to us.

Where were Leicester's Match-winners, capable of turning a game with a flash of brilliance, and an inspired finish?
Exactly!
We had them, and they didn't.

Have to comment on CMS who looked completely fed up with balls coming at him with his back to the goal. He's a channels man, just not getting the service and it is a bit on the laughable side to say Vokes came in to give him support when he is pulled off before there is any chance for that to happen. Work in progress for this week perhaps.

Comment too on the real preoccupation of players trying really hard to get opposition players sent off. Mills ranting at the player and the referee an example with Sparrow. Watching the FL Show most of the Leeds team at Bristol City who had two sent off.

I wonder what it was that Beckford said to Dunk? Must have been serious for a sending off.

Yes, CMS did not look happy when he came off either! Don't blame him, Vokes is supposed to help him, but he cannot if CMS is not ion the pitch! Hope that the two of them are given game time together to gell as I think CMS has been a little hard done by the way he has been forced to play for over half a season. He will not get goals unless someone else is holding up the ball for him and taking defenders away

I too hate to see players getting opponents sent off and I'm afraid Dunk made a lot of a nothing incident yesterday to get Beckford dismissed. As it happened, it was the turning point in the game because Leicester changed their approach to the game after being reduced to 10 men. Yes, I did see the reaction of the Leicester players and I quite agree with you, they ensured the ref showed him a red. That's what I'm saying, it's a despicable side of the game where players play act and implore refs to show cards. It happens in all divisions I'm afraid, but it should not be condoned. I just wish footballers would act as men and get up and get on with it. There are some true professionals around who dont play act but they seem increasingly to be in the minority. It's cheating, just like diving is cheating. Football is a physical game and you cant play the game without expecting a knock or two. Having watched the Ireland v Wales rugby match today makes so many of today footballers seem like "woosies". You'd never see a rugby player rolling around the floor !!!!

Frat, that game of rugby has the players willingly putting their heads between the legs of other men (and usually grunting - not unlike those female tennis players !)
I'll stick to football if you don't mind !
