1:49pm Monday 6th February 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Albion have decided not to appeal over Matt Sparrow's late red card against Leicester.
It means the midfielder will miss the FA Cup fifth round trip to Liverpool on Sunday week, together with this Saturday's visit to Leeds and the home game against Millwall three days later.
Sparrow was sent-off in the closing stages of Saturday's 1-0 victory at The Amex for a lunging tackle on Leicester sub Ben Marshall.
Albion were waiting for referee Andy Woolmer's report before deciding whether to mount an appeal.
Although Woolmer says the tackle was not two-footed he has described it as late, dangerous and reckless.
The ref's verdict has convinced the Seagulls an appeal would not be worthwhile, especially as they would run the risk of it being deemed frivolous. That could have led to another game being added to Sparrow's three-match punishment.

It's further complicated by players rolling around in 'agony' ....until the red card is shown and this seems to often produce a miraculous recovery. Most football fans know the difference between a bad tackle, and a genuine attempt to play the ball. However, the authorities (prompted largely by FIFA) seem determined to ruin the spectacle by having players sent off for what used to be relatively minor offences. Nobody wants to see talented players getting kicked off the park, but equally I think most fans appreciate the sight of good tackling to win the ball.
Am I the only one getting completely fed up with the sanitisation of football today. It seems every referee feels compelled to book or send players off every game in fear of being criticised by their 'assesors' in the stands. Beckford didn't warrant a red card and although Sparrow's challenge was strong and 1 footed it merited a yellow at most. Watching MOTD this weekend and seeing Cisse's and Huth's red cards I start to despair about where footballs going. Granted in the 'current climate' players should think twice about any form of tackle the way the rules are, but I for one don't want to see football become a non-contact sport. At this rate tackling in football will become like childrens rugby where if you 'tag' another player they have to release the ball. I never thought I'd see the day when tackling might be taken out the game...........

Not sure what, if anything Beckford said to Dunk, but he did walk towards him and strike Dunk while he was defenceless on the floor. Ultimately Beckford should not have walked towards Dunk and he certainly should not have touched him!

To those who posted that Spadge went in "studs up" I'd ask "have you ever played or coached in the game?" and "how, precisely, do you slide in, studs down?"
Spadge tackled with one foot which didn't leave the ground. The fact is, BOTH players slid-in and the Leicester player came off worse. Perhaps it's time to outlaw the slide tackle altogether, and then the law would be very clear?
