Albion decide against Sparrow appeal

Albion have decided not to appeal over Matt Sparrow's late red card against Leicester.

It means the midfielder will miss the FA Cup fifth round trip to Liverpool on Sunday week, together with this Saturday's visit to Leeds and the home game against Millwall three days later.

Sparrow was sent-off in the closing stages of Saturday's 1-0 victory at The Amex for a lunging tackle on Leicester sub Ben Marshall.

Albion were waiting for referee Andy Woolmer's report before deciding whether to mount an appeal.

Although Woolmer says the tackle was not two-footed he has described it as late, dangerous and reckless.

The ref's verdict has convinced the Seagulls an appeal would not be worthwhile, especially as they would run the risk of it being deemed frivolous. That could have led to another game being added to Sparrow's three-match punishment.

Fully understandable with the FA's new "guilty" default position on everything from the national team downwards. Spadge would have no chance in any appeal to the FA.

To those who posted that Spadge went in "studs up" I'd ask "have you ever played or coached in the game?" and "how, precisely, do you slide in, studs down?"

Spadge tackled with one foot which didn't leave the ground. The fact is, BOTH players slid-in and the Leicester player came off worse. Perhaps it's time to outlaw the slide tackle altogether, and then the law would be very clear?

Disappointed for Matty that he will miss the Liverpool game, although with the way he and Albion are playing, I am sure there will be plenty more big games to come.

We have proved that we have the squad to deal with injuries and suspensions so I'm not overly worried about this.

Not entirely sure that this article should start with the sensationalistic heading of "Breaking News"! Two lines at the bottom of another, more newsworthy piece would suffice!
However, feel sorry for Sparrow, he seemed to be getting into his game again, but the rules are clear. He should know better!

Will this be Vicente vs Liverpool Part II or a golden opportunity for JFC (who played a par in the 5th Rd last year, remember. This time it's higher profile and on the box.

Could be an important part of his football education or dare I say it 'the making of him'. Already a great prospect, I'd love to see him go up against Gerrard and co.

Having said that The Dagger doing the same is a delicious thought.

Unlucky Spadge but the right decision...you'd never win that on appeal.

By the way, is it just me or are these appeal and video guys absolute buffoons? First the Wolves guy losing his appeal for a clear travesty of justice red card and then Lescott getting clean away with a blatant forearm bashing of Kaboul (sp?) in the City v Spurs game.

Who are these fools?

I also find myself in regular disagreement with former ref Dermot Gallagher when he analyses the weekend's incidents on SSN...he thought the Balatelli stamp was unclear and Lescott's incident was not a red! Astonishing.

Am I the only one getting completely fed up with the sanitisation of football today. It seems every referee feels compelled to book or send players off every game in fear of being criticised by their 'assesors' in the stands. Beckford didn't warrant a red card and although Sparrow's challenge was strong and 1 footed it merited a yellow at most. Watching MOTD this weekend and seeing Cisse's and Huth's red cards I start to despair about where footballs going. Granted in the 'current climate' players should think twice about any form of tackle the way the rules are, but I for one don't want to see football become a non-contact sport. At this rate tackling in football will become like childrens rugby where if you 'tag' another player they have to release the ball. I never thought I'd see the day when tackling might be taken out the game...........

Mind you, Huth usually gets away with murder!

The Beckford red card was an outrage on Saturday. Really poor decision and I know the club have immediately provided Leicester with the footage to help his appeal. Think I saw Gus put his arm on Beckford's shoulder in consolation as he traipsed off at the time...said it all really.

Have to agree with arc12 and cap'n Haddock...what happened to the maxim that football is a "man's game"? Many great players of the past would never last 90 minutes in today's climate.

As for people taking offense at something one player says to another?? Words had better fail me or I will get into trouble

Not sure what, if anything Beckford said to Dunk, but he did walk towards him and strike Dunk while he was defenceless on the floor. Ultimately Beckford should not have walked towards Dunk and he certainly should not have touched him!

Good post - fully agree with the general sentiment of referees feeling obliged to send players off for what (at times) seems nothing more than a good old-fashioned strong tackle. It's further complicated by players rolling around in 'agony' ....until the red card is shown and this seems to often produce a miraculous recovery. Most football fans know the difference between a bad tackle, and a genuine attempt to play the ball. However, the authorities (prompted largely by FIFA) seem determined to ruin the spectacle by having players sent off for what used to be relatively minor offences. Nobody wants to see talented players getting kicked off the park, but equally I think most fans appreciate the sight of good tackling to win the ball.

Ali G, more of a flick than a strike, however i wonder if the subject we cannot discuss was the topic of Beckford's comments ?

My verdict:

Late, dangerous but NOT reckless, but more importantly not even a foul, let alone a yellow card and certainly not a RED.

I think an appeal should have been made for clarification of the rule in this very marginal decision.

I don't should he have made the attempted tackle, especially with Woolmer in charge. But the penalty was disproportionate and too harsh.

Why does anyone find the need to use swear words, no matter how well disguised? It only shows a lack of education.

I choose to swear, it has no bearing on the education I received.

I received a grammar school education back in the days when EVERY teacher refused to mark your work or deducted marks if your English was not up to scratch. No dangling participles nor unrelated clauses in those days but do I swear? Absolutely!!!! I'm nearly 70 now and feel I've earned the right when I'm annoyed enough.

I disagree. A lower moral standard than yourself perhaps, but lack of education? Sounds a bit condescending if you ask me. More importantly you have still not answered as to why you still allow the offensive rantings of Mr Carrot.

"Woolmer says the tackle was not two-footed he has described it as late, dangerous and reckless".
If anyone was watching the Liverpool v Tottenham match tonight, then perhaps they might be able to explain Skrtel's tackle on Gareth Bale towards the latter part of the game. Watching the replay, Woolmer's words described the Liverpool defender's actions perfectly, with Bale being fortunate to escape the tackle in one piece.
Still don't understand why either Beckford or Sparrow received straight reds on Saturday. For me, both the standard of refereeing and the change and translation of the rules of the game have descended into unreality.

If a player gets 4 weeks for stomping on another players head, and a player gets 8 weeks for calling another player a 'name' then to me there is something wrong with the system !
The two penalties Manyoo received on the w/end looked good decisions until the slomo replays...neither were penalties ! Like goal line technology something more is needed to get these decisions right, there is too much money involved. I heard the Leicester guy was sent off for foul and abusive ? F&A to any official should be a straight red, no excuse !
But, to me anything said by one player to another during the game should be like Las Vegas ! (what happens on the park stays on the park !) Too much political correctness today and at times a total lack of respect by one professional footballer to another !

Just had a look at the Leicester fans comments and if you change the names it might be this sites comments. Adkins is up in arms about referring. Seems like Gus has a valid point.
