11:00pm Tuesday 14th February 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Gus Poyet has hailed Albion's 2-2 home draw with Millwall as a "great point" from a "bad day at the office".
Poyet's decision to play Gonzalo Jara Reyes in midfield and no wingers and three strikers backfired until he threw on Kazenga LuaLua to snatch a point with a late free-kick.
He admitted: "I am sure nobody was expecting the team I picked, so if it didn't work I suppose I have to be responsible.
"At the same time I tried to put it right. I tried to convince Kaz it doesn't matter if you play five minutes or 70, you will always have a chance to affect the game.
"And when you have a free-kick and know his power you start feeling sorry for the goalkeeper, because these balls move in an incredible way. If you hit the target you have got a great chance."
The result leaves Albion in ninth place, two points outside the play-offs, and stretches their unbeaten run in 2012 to ten matches.
Poyet added: "If we had drawn at Leeds and beaten Millwall that's four points. We have got the same four points the other way around, so I'm not worried at all. It's just one bad day at the office, too many mistakes but a great point for us.
"I know it sounds bad but it's not and credit to Millwall, because I like the way they play.
"It was always going to be a difficult game because I have been watching Millwall and people are not giving them the credit they deserve.
"Their recruitment in January was excellent. They have got players who can pass the ball."

Most of you on here need to take a reality check...jesus! All this talk about being is just a ridiculous assumption and nothing that Gus has said or done suggests vanity...jokers!
He actually suggests in his interview that he got it wrong.
Think back to Saturday morning...I don't about you, but I was thinking 4 points from these 2 games would do just nicely and that is what we got. It's not the way that you expected it but then surely that is you (benslick & bucket crutch) being big headed and presumptious, thinking we can just roll over Millwall when no game in this league is easy.
I, personally, am pleased that we have a manager that is not scared to try something different.

Just one point I would like to make is that for the first time this season I would have given MOM to one of the opposition as I thought number 6 Trotter was excellent for Millwall and could be the type of player we should be looking to get come the end of the season, big strong and skilful for a big man.. other than that Liverpool here we come..Seagulls...!!

Brezovan was not good and Dunk's problems off the field looked as if they were getting to him. Worst game he has ever had.
We just gave the ball away so much, with Reyes and Dunk being the chief culprits.
Mattock really knew he had a game to play and stuck to it really well. Class player. Navarro got MOM I think for scoring the winner at Leeds as he was pretty anonymous throughout. Noone didn't get the ball when he came on.
Really missed Buckley and where was Vicente?
Need a result against Liverpool at the weekend to boost confidence. No reason why we can't. We certainly can't play any worse than we did last night. Awful, truly awful. I really felt sorry for Millwall.

What a load of rubbish! We have just wasted the hard earned points at Leeds!
This was a must win game for us tonight and we were lucky to get a point from it with such a poor performance! Gus is being rather vain with his eyes on the Liverpool game and eyes off the ball...
We should be fighting for the play offs not wasting our time with the fa cup..
The fa cup should just be a bit of fun not a distraction! Hope gus can at least be honest with himself...
Strongest squad to choose from he said! What a joke, better choose better next time!

You really wonder what football managers are thinking at times. When the team was announced most people around me (and I suspect the majority of the crowd) said that's a crazy team selection. And we were all right. Why on earth play a man who is clearly a defender in midfield? There was not a single spark of creativity in the starting midfield. We have lots of genuine midfielders - why not start at home with a winger or JFC or Harley (or even Vincelot for that matter). That team selection was clearly wrong from the start. A point is not a disaster but if we want to force our way into the play-offs rather than permanently being 2 or 3 or 4 points off the play-offs then we must beat teams at the bottom of teh table. Millwall are down there because they actually aren't very good.

As for Reyes, like Wiseman and BHA Dave have said, when Reyes first came here he was touted as a midfielder as well as a defender. His passing ability and deft touches were clearly thought by Gus to be attributes that would illuminate midfield. In the event, it didn't work but Gus knows that and has admitted it.

Name a side that went an entire season without dropping points, name a side newly promoted to a division that won every game comfortably... this is football - sometimes you play badly, sometimes you lose, sometimes you draw when you should have lost, sometimes you win when you should have drawn - its not an exact science. Sometimes I despair at the negativity on this board.... I think we are doing ok - to say "better get it right next time" or whatever some numpty posted above somewhere, is just ridiculous.

Ken from Beamish wrote:Spot on. At the design stage, Gus stipulated that the Amex pitch was to be as wide as possible. Not to play wingers from the outset capable of taking on opponents and crossing from the byline seems a waste of all that space. And telling players "not to sulk" if they are not selected and KLL that it doesn't matter whether he plays for 5 minutes or 70 is frankly demeaning.
When the side was announced, the lack of any pace wide was a great cause for concern ...and so it proved. Three midfield players all looking for that central role, three forward players craving for some creativity from midfield but left to do it for themselves, and Dunk and Greer unable to find an outlet through midfield. For once, Gus got it tactically wrong and Millwall grew in confidence as the game progressed. Fair play for fronting up to getting it wrong, but think this was two points lost. With a winger in place from the off, it would have given them more to think about defensively, but both full backs knew that Calderon and Mattock did not have sufficient pace to go past them - so allowed the ball to be crossed in from wide and simply got the two big centre halves to head it away. Still a fantastic achievement to be in 9th position, but if we keep to our solid shape with some flair players involved, this can be even better. Vokes was good, and CMS may be seeing more of the bench in the near future.

Yes we struggled last night against a strong, well organised and fairly decent side. Number 6, Trotter, stood out for me. Stong big and quick (rare combination) just the sort of player we could do with at times! Team selection odd and cost us the whole 3 points as I am fairly sure we would have turned them over in greater style if we had played a different team. Still, unbeaton in2012 and shouting distance of the playoffs, so not really much to be unhappy about!!
On another note, Just wanted to say what a disgrace a significant majority of Millwall's fans are. Aggressive, foul mouthed scum who go out of their way to "prove" themselves regardless of who is around them, woman, kids and the elderly. They think they are hard and threatening, but they are just morons who must live in the gutter and want eveyone to hate them. Ally clubs have their hard boys, but few like this rabble and fewer still that would show so much dis-respect for children, woman etc. Apologies in advance to any decent Millwall fans reading this, but many of your fans are just pond life (and thats not even fair to the inhabitents of murky green, stagnant water!”

Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Stoke, to name but a few, have run down areas where the locals have a tough life and reputation, but nothing like that lot. They seem to exist at a far lower level with little or no regard for the basic morals or standards which exist for most. What a cross to bare for Millwall FC and the decent fans they must have, even though it seems they dont have any at all!
