Wolves have reached another dead end in their search for a manager after targeting Albion boss Gus Poyet.
Reading manager Brian McDermott has rejected their advances and reportedly agreed a new three-and-a-half year contract with one of the Seagulls' Championship promotion rivals.
Sources in the West Midlands say Wolves also turned back to Alan Curbishley but have been rebuffed by the former Albion midfielder.
A Wolves fans' website has branded the hunt to find Mick McCarthy's successor as a "total farce".
Albion have stayed silent over Wolves' interest in Poyet, with both the manager and chairman Tony Bloom refusing to comment.
Poyet's name is not included on a poll of six candidates being run by the local newspaper, The Express & Star.
Steve Bruce has re-emerged as the frontrunner, although he has not been contacted by Wolves since he was interviewed at the end of last week.
Terry Connor, the former Albion striker and McCarthy's assistant, could be in caretaker charge against Newcastle on Saturday if the saga is not resolved.
