Poyet hails Vicente contribution

Gus Poyet hopes Vicente can continue to play a major role in Albion's push for a place in the Championship play-offs.

The former Spain international came off the bench to score twice as the Seagulls beat Portsmouth 2-0 at The Amex to climb to fifth in the table.

It was only Vicente's seventh league appearances since signing last September after a succession of injury problems.

Poyet said: "I'm not going to get tired of saying it, Vicente is the best player at the football club. He is quality because of where he has played and what he has achieved in his career.

"Unfortunately, for different reasons, we couldn't have him week in, week out so a month ago we made a decision to push him to the limit in terms of fitness, which is not nice, but I thought right or wrongly we needed to force him to get to another level and this week in training he was absolutely spectacular.

"I needed to find a place somehow in the squad. Razak and Assulin have been with us a lot but today they were not in the squad because I needed to find a place for Vicente.

"For him today to be able to perform the way he did and score the two goals that ended up winning the game he has got to be proud.

"It has been frustrating for him. He came here to play football. He had options to go to bigger clubs and earn more money but he chose us because he was convinced it was the right place to play football. Let's hope we have him now from the next game to the end of the season."

Great team performance today with Vicente different class. If he can stay fit we are certainly in for an exciting end to the first Amex season.

He is awesome and every time he touches the ball is difference in class is obvious. He creates so much and sees and makes the killer pass and best of all...he now has a song!

Vicente was the difference, though Noone, Buckley and Lua Lua all had perfectly decent displays as wingers - perhaps Gus should encourage them on occasion when moving in to the box to aim to go past one further man rather than always pass - more penalties or really cause affray that way - they all have the perfect ability to nip past people - Vicente has the ability to deliver a decent incisive pass in a tight space. Let's hope we improve at mid week home league matches on picking up precious maximum points. 6 shots for us in total. None on target for Pompey - Jara Reyes and Mattock pushing well forward works well

Ken from Beamish says...
9:00pm Sat 10 Mar 12

Plenty of possession, especially in wide positions, but poor quality of final ball into the box from the likes of Noone & Buckley, and indeed from both full backs. Also, Bridcutt had one of his least effective games in controlling the game from midfield. So when Gus needs quality and control, he calls on Vicente (when he's available). Pure class from the moment he came on - controlled the game from that point and scored two goals. Not a great game but Gus has a big enough squad now to have potential match winners on the bench each week, who can then come on when things are not working to plan. Don't necessarily see Vicente starting but he has such quality to change the game from the bench, that we all hope he stays fit from now until the end of the season. Should also pay tribute to Lua-Lua who looked a real handful, and it's clear the coaching is working on his delivery and also when to just play it simply. Exciting times, just hope the weight of expectation is not too great for the players to cope with. Bound to help though having a player (Vicente) with Champions League & La Liga experience in and around the team. I am sure he fancies a trip to play at Wembley in May!

Gazza by the sea says...
9:16pm Sat 10 Mar 12

Good to grind them down eventually but we're clearly still not firing on all cylinders. Do wish Gus would dispense with the Bridcutt experiment and put him back in the holding role where he excels. Do that and we'd create room for at least one of the flair/creative players - which Bridcutt isn't. We have the quality to make the play-offs but getting more than a bit frustrated with the number of comments about our 'quality bench'. 2 wingers is fine but a central midfield of Navarro, Bridcutt and Barnes doesn't have the guile to get the ball to them and the front man regularly. Apart from the first ten minutes it was all a bit pedestrian until Vicente appeared. Come on Gus - let the creative juices flow!

With the squad we've got I don't see the need for Assulin and Razak. With Vicente returning that's one less space in the match-day 16 anyway. Then there's Dicker in contention as well. If the starting 11 were just a bit livelier from the start we would be winning games by half time. 6 wins from the remaining 10 should be the target for a pay-off place (plus a couple of draws).

Vicente sees the ball to play as if he was sat in the west stand upper with a full view of the whole pitch. Absoluteley head and shoulders above anyone in the division in terms of vision and way above most in terms of ability. Ashley Barnes was man of the match for me until Vicente stepped on the pitch though.

Vicente is justifying the gamble taken in signing him, and hopefully this will continue over the next ten games.
He has shown against Leicester, and now Portsmouth, that his vision and expertise can elevate us from a top ten side to potentially the top six.
I wouldn't like to see him risked for more than the final half hour of matches. That is all he needs to have a decisive impact.

If we were languishing towards the bottom of the table, then your comments would be justifiable, but we're not, we're 5th and just in case you'd forgotten we were in that place called League 1 last year!

The Chairman was interviewed the other day and said, along the lines of, you can't pick and choose when you go up. If we come through and do win promotion we will give it a good go. Can't ask for any more than that.

If Vicente stays fit I wouldn't bet against us going up again. That's a big if though.

The point of having Razak and Assulin in the squad is that it gives us more options! A team could win 6-0 against one team yet struggle against a team which is 'inferior' to the team which they beat. You need to adapt your style according to the opposition and that means having strength in depth. It's not rocket science, though very nearly. ;p

A good result yesterday, against a team fighting for their lives that had some amazing support and still 50% of comments are regarding what changes should be made and how their getting frustrated with this and that and if it wasn't for so and so then we wouldn't have won.

If we were languishing towards the bottom of the table, then your comments would be justifiable, but we're not, we're 5th and just in case you'd forgotten we were in that place called League 1 last year!

The league table speaks for itself. Why the need to make the changes that a lot of you are suggesting when we are doing so well?

This site should be full of fans pleased that we're back in the play-off zone this weekend, not full of moaners wanting changes to players and line-ups...again!

Good Saturday really with many other results also helping our cause. We seem to be hitting form at a good time of the season so hope we can maintain the run, as that also puts pressure on the challenging teams. It was a long time coming yesterday but our superiority came through in the end. The Squad sytem really comes into play at this time of the season and it's nice to see Gus using the full range of options trying both wingers and then being able to revert to a different approach if it's not paying dividends. Noone took a battering yesterday, but it was great to see him back. Vincente's class was special, so hope he gets to play in the majority of the remaining games, and nice to see Kazenga again make a telling contribution. Wouldn't it be great if we do a Reading and win 8 on the bounce ?

Yep, Noone got smashed up yesterday and was taken out of the game, tand was probably why we lost our early momentum. We got through it, were never in trouble and we broke them down. Good win and a good job.

It was nice to wake up this morning and realising that being in the top 6 isn’t a dream. Still lots to do and I wouldn’t like to predict the outcome of Blackpool other than it is going to be completely nuts and it will be like playing against a bunch angry wasps. They will be furious at their own current form and will be a must win game for them.

Other upcoming games of interest to us;

Tuesday
Cardiff v Hull

Saturday
Birmingham v Middlesbrough
Like the Blackpool analogy Hovite, also Leicester v Birmingham Tuesday. If Cardiff get a point or more will need Brum to drop points, for us to stay in a play off place.

I agree with you. Brighton look like a slick passing outfit with some quality players. So what if they didnt score in the first half, they eventually got the goals in the end. They all played their part. Only question mark is over the goalie who looks clanger prone (hope his luck holds LOL).

Reckon we have the quality and momentum for top 6 for sure. Promo will require a fair dose of luck but certainly achievable

Re: KLL 'handball', ball bounced up at him so if his hand or arm made contact it wasn't intentional. In any case seconds before he was pulled or impeded so he deserved the advantage if the ref missed the foul. Justice was done. Brighton fully deserved the win

Without a doubt this is a weak position at present, we need a keeper who can command his Area, come back Grummitt. Brighton Bill Yorkshire Seagull.

Interesting reaction from Ashley after Vicente scores his second and clinches 3 points for the team - worth a quick view if you've not seen. That of a hungry striker I guess and common maybe amongst many forwards, so maybe a good one??

Yes, just watched it backed. CMS didn't exactly celebrate and Barnes looked hacked off that KLL had not passed the ball to him. Interesting reactions.

Now that you mention it I watched again and Barnes does look like his team hade just conceded rather than won the game. Watched the Sky sports offering of highlights and yet again the commentator made it sound like Portsmouth where the better team even stated that the ref missed a handball by LL but never mentioned that he was fouled twice even getting up of the floor to get the pass in. I reckon if we where to play Manchester United and win these Sky commentators would be chocked up with tears.

Unfortunately Vicente was booked for taking his shirt off after his first goal. This is what football had come to.
Hope Pompey can survive, perhaps the best away support seen at the Amex also great home support with humour thrown in.
Albion....Albion!
Hi, Are you sure he was booked? as both BBC and Sky show yellow cards Brighton 0 Portsmouth 2
Mike Dean is one of the top referees around. I did not see him brandish a card towards Vicente after the goal; and, as you point out, neither did any reporters of the match.
Unfortunately I saw the yellow card waved at Vicente, it was along time after the event when he had his shirt back on and was running back into our half.
Sadly he was booked the ref waited for him when he got back to the centre spot and there was a yellow against his name on the main score board. Seems it is ok to kick Noone off the pitch but you can't take your shirt off to celebrate a goal anymore. Anyway great win, the only way is up!

Awful reaction from Barnes. Good spot. I can understand him having his hands in the air before the goal, but once it is scored he should be celebrating with the rest of us. KLL chose the better option anyway, Vicente was better placed than Barnes.

You're right, maybe he was just so tired from the incredible shift that he puts in that he could physically not summon the energy to move once the goal went in.

The fact he recognised the shirt proves the opposite of his statement is true - as he's noticed our great footy - or he supports a known rival club - jealous!
