Poyet hits back at claims Albion are big spenders
5:00pm Friday 27th April 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Poyet says Ipswich fans were wide of the mark with their banner
Gus Poyet has revealed the extent of the financial odds he has been fighting against to steer Albion into the top ten of the Championship.
The Seagulls will finish between eighth and 11th, depending on tomorrow’s last match of the season at Barnsley and other results.
They are guaranteed to be above much bigger spenders such as Ipswich, whose fans mocked Albion’s supposed financial muscle with a banner when they visited The Amex in February.
Poyet told The Argus: “People talk and think we’ve got more money than we have really got. There are for sure 15 teams better than us in budget and a few of them, or even most of them, even double.
“Ipswich had a player who played in the back four that played against us twice who is earning more than my whole back four but they (fans) came here with a big banner saying it’s not all about money.
“Well Ipswich fans I can tell you now if you didn’t know you have got double the budget of ours, confirmed, proven, so I think people are taking Brighton the wrong way which means if we finish in the top ten it’s an unbelievable season.
“If somebody wants to read it in a different way then you are not being realistic, very naive, and you don’t have a clue how it works.
“Even if you put transfers on top we are still 15th or 16th. I am not crying, I accept it, I just want people to know where we are standing.”
Poyet is hoping for a “nice surprise” when he sits down with chairman Tony Bloom next week to discuss the budget for next season and summer recruitment.
He said: “Our list is not massive because I want players with specific qualities in a salary range which is not the highest in the division and are a certain age and not too expensive (fee).
“To get one of your top two choices is very difficult. Most of the time you don’t, so you got for the third or fourth choice, so it’s not easy to be the head of football operations for my team because it’s not just about filling a position.
“We buy players with certain qualities and the better we do that job the better the team we’ll have, so we’ll see if we can achieve that. It’s not going to be easy.
“Normally you are going to try to buy a player, if he is British, that is proven in this division who is playing well.
“That costs money and we can compete with six or eight teams and we are not able to compete with the other 14 or 15. That’s the reality.”

Anyway - lets hope Gus can get some bargains in next season.

I reckon Gus has shown that he gets it right most of the time, especially if all the players that have come have been his 3rd or 4th choice for that position

So it looks as if Poyet is going to have a busy time in the next couple of months or so and judging from this thread quite a difficult time in acquiring the type of players he feels we need.
I shall be watching this space amongst others to see exactly who does join BHA. Interesting times ahead.
Hopefully we will end this season on a positive note by beating Barnsley.

Looking at our existing squad and ignoring loanees and development squad players I can only see 16 players that imo will still be with the Albion next year. This list excludes Vicente who I hope will remain.

I thought last summer was pretty special for new arrivals, but I reckon the summer signings will be even more impressive.
Great season, but onwards and upwards - together with 8,000 more fans packed in at the AMEX.

- those with premier league parachute payments.
-those who haven't had to play in a converted athletics stadium for the last decade.
-those with richer chairmen and bigger debts than us.
I am happy the way things are. The budget will get bigger as we become more successful. Rome wasn't built in a day. As I said in a previous post, Gus has proved he can do well with a restricted budget.

Home grown players are expensive - is that a hint that we will be bringing in a few more foreign imports? That's my tip and I certainly hope so if Calde and Vicente are anything to go on

We don't have better players than other Championship sides, (with the recent exception of Vicente), and anyone can beat anyone.
B&HA have done so more often than most, and if anything, this season is a greater triumph for Gus than the last one, because his Title winning 1st division side were stronger than the available squad for much of this season.
We will again be relying on Gus's expertise against far wealthier clubs, but his record suggests that he can bridge the financial divide.

I remember the days of someone (was it MBTS under an alias?) always banging on about 'Sussex Rich Kids' and the coaching staff eating KFCs. I used to enjoy that and the banter and humour then, even if I didn't agree with some of it. People are getting a little too precious about their football teams in my opinion and it's that sort of jingoistic intolerance that causes so much violence. Lighten up...you'll enjoy everything more. I used to comment on MBTS's spelling but I was never serious. I miss his inside info, where is he?

Back to football, if the budget is so restricted, how could they pay a salary to tempt CMS away from WH or Leicester as well as pay 2.5m and pay Vincenze's wages? Think it's a load of BS
If Guss says he's bringing in 6 players including two for left and right backs currently loan players that means he will let go 4 players unless he aims to cut the size of the squad

I think the way we played at Peterborough last season impressed him massively.
Plus no decent footballer really wants to play it Fat Sam's way.
Vicente is paid within the clubs salary cap, he is playing for far less than he has been on in the past. He came to get fit, play football and see how he liked England.
Both could have had more money this season, and chose somewhere that they felt they would be happier playing, I hope they both feel happy with their choices.

Poyet needs to reduce the size of the squad which is currently 48 to free up some cash for new signings.
