Albion end with a draw

Albion rounded off their return to the Championship with a 0-0 draw at bitterly cold Barnsley today.

It was a tame way to finish what has been a momentous season for the club.

But they would have ended in defeat had home sub John Stones not headed wide from point blank range with the final touch of the match.

The sense of anti-climax was perhaps summed up when a frustrated looking Vicente fired a free-kick over the bar on 90 minutes.

The Seagulls overcame a sluggish start to have the better chances in a quiet first half.

Will Buckley was involved in their better moments.

The winger popped up just beyond the far post to knock the ball back after Vicente had chipped a great cross from the byline but Ashley Barnes’ shot was off target.

Then Buckley’s terrific run and cross on the right set up Gary Dicker for a drive which David Button did well to save.

Barnsley defenders almost contrived to turn an Inigo Calderon cross into their own net while the Tykes’ one moment of menace was ended by Lewis Dunk’s timely sliding tackle as Stephen Dawson bore down on goal.

The second half was a non-event, although David Gonzalez capped a very assured display between the sticks by holding on to Jim O’Brien’s well struck drive.

Even though we finished with a draw, I think we have all enjoyed our first season at The Amex. At time we have seen some great football, and all we need to do next season is produce it home and away week in week out. We can do it...looking forward to it already...

So 9 months have flown by and we have finished 9th. I for one think that we have achieved so much this season. The stadium is breathtaking, the chariman and manager have vision and the players have provided this writer with excitement that I will remember. Walking to my seat at the Amex on that first day was memorable and the same emotion still greets me every time, cant wait until August. UTA.

We've had a very good season, much better than expected. But, despite all of Gus's claims to the contrary all week, it was obvious that this game was going to be a non-event and a waste of time and I'm very glad I decided not to give up a day and spend a lot of money going to Barnsley. But isn't it strange about Vicente - clearly he is a far better player than the rest of our team and it has been a delight to watch him. But the fact is that since he has been playing regularly we have been unable to win a match. Yes, we've had some tough fixtures in that period but we've also played several of the poorer teams in the division but we haven't beaten any of them. What bothers me is whether having one top quality player in what is essentially a workmanlike team of good Division 1 / reasonable Championship players will ever be successful.

Albion have finished tenth so well done this season.3 pts out of a possible 18 for the last 6 games is relegation form though and the lack of goals from midfield(totally non existant)and few from the attackers is worrying but hopefully Gus will sort this out for next season.
Cannot see Vokes being with us next season, very cumbersome and does not have that target man threat about him.
Change of keeper today be interesting who remains, feel Ankergren most likely to leave.

While we had six games to go, and were still in with a chance of the play-offs, I reminded us that the last time we played those six sides we collected only four points out of eighteen, and scored just two goals.
I pointed out that the matches were played at the height of our injury crisis, but with a full squad now available, we should make the necessary improvement in the second meeting with those teams, and snatch a play-off place.
This time around, we have picked up a meagre three points out of eighteen, and scored only three goals.
The obvious conclusion is that the players who returned from injury combined with all the loan signings haven't had the slightest effect on our ability to get results.
Having said that, 10th is a very respectable finish, but if the target is The Premiership, it will not be achieved without a major influx of talent.
I don't think second-string Premier league players are the answer, and bringing in players from abroad is always a gamble. We need to poach experienced, proven players who are currently cutting it at this level.
While I love watching Vicente play, his inclusion has coincided with our worst run of results in the entire season. while of course I am not saying this is Vicente's fault, his talents have unfortunately not had the desired effect of raising our game.
It would not look appropriate to speculate on what level of investment Tony Bloom should commit himself to, but it is clear that a lot needs to be done to ensure continued progress.
Taking into consideration the Club's Owner, Manager, Stadium, and the decent bunch of players who have taken us this far, the good news is that there isn't any bad news.

Gee Jay says...

Yep, today a non-event, another draw. I'm afraid that we have finished a fantastic first season with a poor run of results.
Great to finish 10th in our return to the Championship, but our forwards have not ben scoring, if it wasn't for 'Caldi' (a full back, for heaven's sake)the last few results would have been worse.
We need a 'finisher' for next season, Becchio or Snodgrass (should be available after Warnock's clear out) A guy who can play effectively alongside CMS.

Do cockroaches buy season tickets? I didn't know they had that kind of spending power.
Given their small size, this could be an unexploited goldmine, as their seating requirements woulds be minimal.

As for fans ''appearing out of nowhere'', they have always been fans, but until now there wasn't room for them all.

I would have thought the sale of Oxlade-Chamberlain - was it £12,000,000 with possible add ons? plus decent gates to come - is a good base for the Saints to build on. Yep, agree with all you say(as usual!) We are, with the current players, a very adequate mid table Championship side and entertaining too. However, if the Premiership is the ambition, which it clearly is, we need to sign around 6 top Championship/ex Premiership players. That is easier said than done and there is of course the small matter of money..........! Anyway, very enjoyable season, although ending in a whimper which is a shame. Maybe you should do a little research before posting wild, unfounded accusations.

''Just as it looked like the club would have to fold, the cavalry arrived in the shape of Markus Liebherr, whose DMWSL 613 Limited acquired the share capital of the football club (and other group companies) from the administrators of Southampton Leisure Holdings Plc on 8 July 2009. Not only did the new owner save the club, but he also paid the debts in full, as opposed to many new owners who only pay a few pennies in the pound for debts owed, leaving many small business and public authorities out of pocket.''
