Gus Poyet applauds the fans at Barnsley
Gus Poyet urged fans to enjoy their local bragging rights after Albion finished tenth in the Championship.
A run of five points from their last eight games was capped by today’s dull 0-0 draw at Barnsley.
It was a disappointing finish to a memorable and momentous season for the Seagulls back in the Championship.
But they finish in the top half and well clear of rivals Crystal Palace.
Boss Poyet said: “I will tell you two or three things that are very important.
“One is finishing tenth. For the last 20 years Brighton didn’t finish in the top ten in the second tier of English football so credit to the players.
“Then I always say if you have a big, big rival you have two options. You can try and beat them and it doesn’t matter what happens in the end.
“I like the one where you finish ahead of the big rival by ten points.
“Every single Brighton fan all over the country and all over the world should be proud of this group of players.”
Both teams had struggled for goals of late with Albion failing to score in their final three away games.
Poyet said: “If I was a betting person, which I am not, I would have bet on a 0-0.
“After 45 minutes I thought the good news was there was only 45 to go.”
