Navarro has lots of options

Alan Navarro Alan Navarro

ALBION boss Gus Poyet expects Alan Navarro to be playing in the Championship next season – whether or not it is with the Seagulls.

Navarro is out of contract after making his 33rd league appearance of the campaign as a substitute in Saturday’s closing 0-0 draw at Barnsley.

Poyet told The Argus: “I talked to Navs three or four months ago and I said to him in my honest opinion he was in a win-win situation, because he has been playing week in and week out, performing at this level.

“I am sure he is going to have a great opportunity to keep playing at this level in the Championship.

“Then it’s decisions. We have got players under contract, there are plenty of things we need to sort out.

“We are going to talk with everyone this week. We’ve already talked with three or four. We have got a list and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we are going to speak to them one-to-one.

Navarro was released a year ago but invited back for pre-season and ending up earning a one-year deal.

He said: “I have always thought that I can play in the Championship. I know everyone thinks they can play higher and I have played higher in the past.

“It’s just whether you get the luck and which manager is there at the time.

“I think I have taken my chance but we’ll see what happens now. I feel at home in teams that play football.”

David Gonzalez is also out of contract after a shut-out for the Colombian at Barnsley on his away debut helped Albion finish tenth in the table.

Poyet said: “We are going to have a chat with David. I didn’t want to talk to him before the game. He didn’t have a lot to do but everything he did he did well.

“He kicked well. It wasn’t one of the biggest or most difficult games of his life but he was good enough and I’m pleased for him, because he deserved to be in the position to keep a clean sheet.”

Navs deserves a contract here been quality since he came back into the team. Whether he will be first XI every week though I have my doubts.

Sounds like Navs will be invited to wait while we try to offload some contracted midfielders (Sparrow presumably but possibly also Dicker?). If in the meanwhile he gets another offer then it will be up to him. Hard to see Gonzalez getting a deal unless at least one of Ankergren and Brezovan move on

Get rid of all 3 Keepers!!!
Think Tom Heaton is out of contract at Cardiff

I would imagine Gus would be happy for Navvaro to stay, but i'm guessing it would only be another 1-Year-deal. I'm sure other clubs (with less lofty aspirations), would be pleased to offer him 2 years, a promoted league 1 side or a Barnsley / Watford etc etc. It would not surprise me if all three keepers went, if not, two of the three. It's going to be a very exciting summer and hopefully a good enough one to convince Vicente to sign a new deal.

I hope Navs stays on. Hes a gritty team player that you need at this level. Even as backup from Bridcutt (If Bridcutt isn't snapped up by another team)

if we want to move forward Navarro will have to go all though
he his a good player .He is not quite good enough for a top championship club ,may be just a back up if we can't bring better in.We need a few players who have that bit more in mid-field and forward positions. We should buy a good goal keeper and fullback also.

I think he is worth keeping as a backup man, nothing more, he does have some composure but nothing too exciting going forward, other than his couple of long range shots recently.

Firstly, well done to the Albion on a great season. Just 2 years ago we were mighty relieved to stay in Div 1. The majority of the team came up last year, and have found their feet. I feel confident that the Management Team have the knowledge, skills, and access to resources for a promotion push next season. If Navs is part of the squad, it is because GP thinks he can perform at this level.

Poyet surely isn't going to offer Gonzalez a contract? Of the six keepers the only two worth keeping are Ankegren and Brezovan.

Navarro would be a loss as would Dicker and Sparrow.

What is going to happen to Dunk now that he has been charged?

Is that based on just the couple of games Gonzalez has played for the Albion?

It's that time of year - who will go and who will replace them? Current top rumours are Dean Marney from Burnley in midfield and Aaron McLean from Hull to renew his partnership with CMS. Would be good to go into the summer with a few signings "in the bag"

Who would I keep?

Ankegren
Brezovan
Calderon
Reyes
Mattock
Painter
Greer
Dunk
El-Abd
Elphick
Hall
Vincelot
Vicente
Dicker
Bridcutt
Navarro
Buckley
Sparrow
LuaLua
Noone
Harley
Forster-Caskey
Barnes
Mackail-Smith
Vokes

RELEASE THE OTHER 23 GUS!

Dave - He has played only two games because he isn't good enough. If he was better than Ankegren and Brezovan he would have played.

Am I the only one who thinks Gus is saying Navarro won't have his contract renewed because we're going on to bigger and better things? But Navs will get another deal in the Championship because he's playing regularly for us. Seems pretty clear to me that it's bye bye Navs.

completely agree guys. i think Navs will be one of many to go, great pro and super role model for the kids but top 6 championship midfielder? probably not.

i like boyd but im not sure we need another lightweight midfielder he will cost a fair bit too we really need a bit of muscle who will get the game by the neck. im expecting a gd clear out as i said before this season was about finding out who can cut the mustard and where we need improving whats gd on that is its very clear where we are weak just depends who much mr bloom gives to strengthen im sure the development squad will be given more of a run out next season so we might not need to spend fortunes when they have had the better part of 2 yrs learning gus' way of playing

Yes I would love Joe Lewis as a free but it is rumored that he will sign for Aston Villa as back up to Shay Given. If it wasn't about money for him then his better move would surely be to a club like the albion?

Offering Boyd, Lewis and McCann for sale? Hmmm money troubles (their gates are woeful) or just a major rebuild?

Lewis would be useful.

I'd like us to sign one or more of the following GKs:

Joe Lewis
Lee Camp
Kuszak (sp?)

Or

Speroni! VERY good keeper and he must be fed up wasting his time with The Oddballs from up the A23 by now, surely?! ;0)

Would also like some o these 'feasibles':

Joe Mattock (WBA)

Nick Powell (Crewe)
Barry Robson (M'boro)
Jacob Butterfield (Barnsley)
Gai Assulin (season loan from Man City)

Aaron McLean (Hull)
Marvin Emnes (M'boro)
Jordan Rhodes (Hudds....bit ambitious, this one!)

Of course I'd also like to see Vicente take up a second year with us (and more!)

Pretty sure it's too soon for Bobby Z to return though, I regret.
