Albion in race against time to keep Hall

Grant Hall in action against Wrexham last season Grant Hall in action against Wrexham last season

Albion are racing against the clock to hang onto Grant Hall.

The highly-rated centre half is stalling on signing a new three-year deal amid continuing interest from Spurs.

The Seagulls have until June 30, when Hall’s current contract expires, to persuade him his long-term future is at The Amex.

Boss Gus Poyet told The Argus: “He is a player that we really value and are looking forward to having in the club. Of course, he has finished his contract so we’ve got five weeks to try to make this happen."

See The Argus today for the full story plus how a high-tech piece of kit is speeding up Tommy Elphick's recovery

Oh dear! Looks like the Albion management got caught out with this one... Who can blame the lad - being employed on more money at Spurs, even if not in the first team squad, must sound a whole lot better than being stuck in the background at Brighton.

IMHO he should stay and develop with Gus and the coaching staff, probably very flattered by the interest shown by Spurs, but how much first team football would he play there?

CAKEBEARD says...
9:21am Thu 24 May 12

Not seen enough of him, but if Spurs think he can bit part of a Champions League push in the future he must be worth keeping.

7Rookie says...

Hope he stays but no one could blame him if he chose Spurs (even if they are managed by Redknapp)

9:30am Thu 24 May 12

If he goes we will get a development fee and who knows, if he fails again (as he did before leaving us for Lewes) maybe we will get him back for a third time one day? Couldn't blame the lad for making the step up if he takes 'Arry's silver shilling.

albionite says...
9:38am Thu 24 May 12

It may be a case of 'what goes around comes around'. The Albion let him go three years ago and Lewes snapped him up. He was excellent for Lewes (scored a cracking overhead kick at Hampton & R) before Brighton came back for him. Now Spurs have come calling he may feel he owes little to Brighton as they obviously felt little for him originally, and certainly no loyalty, so why should he for them?

SMF20 says...

My biggest issue with this is why leave it until now? why so late in the day? I know Gus has his way and that we have to trust him and the rest of the management team to get it right but surely we may need a rethink on how we work contract renewal. Last week we were reading about GG having only a year left.

HOVEPARKRESIDENT says...
10:04am Thu 24 May 12

He's holding out for the best offer whether that be Spurs, Brighton or Bognor. Like all footballers he will go where the most money is, simple as that.

Captain Haddock says...
11:07am Thu 24 May 12

At the beginning of the season he was just a development squad member who may one day break into the first team.

Gus gave him a chance and he took it.

Even so, it was probably not expected that Spurs would come a-callin' so promptly, so the fact he was in a final year of contract left little time for us to realise he was genuine first team material and secure him on a longer deal.

Perhaps we did try to negotiate a new deal in Jan but he'd know of Spurs' interest and his freedom to talk to them imminently back then so little chance of success for us?

Captain Haddock says...
11:10am Thu 24 May 12

I just hope he recognises the greater opportunity for development and first team action he'd get with us.

Also, Gus wasn't manager when he was released previously so no need for him to feel aggrieved with previous decision.

brightonup says...
11:11am Thu 24 May 12

Good prospect; some players reflect on where their longer term prospects lie - and do not go for immediate remuneration. Maybe Hall is one who fits that category.... it is all speculation though....

HOVEPARKRESIDENT says...
11:27am Thu 24 May 12

Money money money! If he really wanted to stay at Brighton he would have signed a new contract by now. He is waiting for a better offer from a better club. He'll be a goner very soon along with Vicente and anybody else with any sense.

I skim over your comments now and don't often read them becuase they are predictable, negative and repetitive. If not one person had responded to your comments during the recent Months then i imagine you would have lost interest in your daily postings and given up.

Aside from wanting to wind people up under a mystery disguise, i fail to understand why you take time out of everyday to post the rubbish on here that you do.

If you had an enjoyable and rewarding career, a lovely woman, many friends and a love of football then you wouldn't. It's as simple as that.

I say it as it is, unlike the majority on here who are blinded by the obvious. The bottom line is Brighton have a very poor manager and a very below average team. The way things are looking nothing is going to change for next season. Negative maybe, but when was the last time there was anything positive to say about Poyet and co? Very poor end to the season, no exiting signings to look forward to and to much nonsense about holding onto players who obviously don't want to be here.

The few times I saw Grant Hall I was very impressed and infact preferred him at left back to Painter. Similarly, like JFC, he looked to me like he's going to have a decent career in footy. Just hope with both of them it's at the Albion.

Grant should remember what happened to John Bostock - transferred to Spurs before he was ready, didn't get a look in and ended up being constantly sent out on loan. He finished last season struggling to make an impact at a League 2 club. Continue your progression at the Albion Grant.

I agree in some part with HPR, i think it will come down to money. At the end of the day, if Spurs are offering more with a longer contract he will leave regardless of guarentee of first team football etc. Lets be honest he has barely featured for us (3 games), whats to say if Spurs did sign him he would get a run out in carling cup with them. The Bostock comparision is slightly different as he was 16 when he signed for spurs, but it is a lesson for all aspiring footballers that when the big clubs come a calling it doesnt always work out! Personally i hope we keep him as he looks a very good prospect, but its all up to the player/agent!

I was impressed by Hall when he got a chance to play. But, like JFC, Gus decided he needed those loan players and all of the you players were frozen out. If he is only 30 days from the end of his contract then it's not surprising that Spurs and others will take a chance on signing him. Maybe he has already advised Gus that he is moving on.

To my surprise his/her focus on undermining the true purpose of the site has even won support from some who find him/her entertaining and who champion free speech - so s/he even has us falling out amongst ourselves - some feat! This abuse of the facility cannot be dealt with in the proper way by the Argus because s/he is careful to remain within the limits of the site terms. If he choses to stay and fight for a first team spot at Albion, why does that make him a mummy's boy? If he has signed a 'pre' contract with Spurs, then it's perfectly legitimate to say so, no need to keep it quiet. At 20, why should he be playing regularly? Surely it's about pushing himself in training to catch the coaches eye and force himself into the team. Of course finances come into it, but at 20 years, he still has plenty of time.in his case I'm not sure that loan players had anything to do with his limited playing time, particularly in his proper position of CH(although I do concede that Mattock probably affected his chances (and at that stage Mattock, a specialist left back, was,and remains a better option surely) And of course, El Abd played well enough as fullback cover and as a CB)
I've posted previously that I like Hall and believe he's an excellent prospect at this stage. If Gus agrees, as he seems to, then it's about his powers of persuasion and Mr. Burke's negotiating skills, the agents advice, and of course the clubs wage structure and finances, within stated parameters. I for one hope he stays,
Que sera sera

Nothing to do with the first team manager, proper or not. Hinselwood and the youth coaches let him go. There were others who went, but they were not brought back were they, so are not in the position Grant now finds himself in - ie having the 'upper hand'.
