Albion target extra power
5:00pm Friday 25th May 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Gus Poyet wants five players
Gus Poyet believes summer recruitment will be easier for Albion this year as he tries to add more power to his Championship squad.
The manager, pictured below, says he knows what is required following their first season back in the second tier.
The Seagulls finished tenth on their return to the Championship, fading from play-off contention in the final straight after winning League One.
Poyet told The Argus: “We know what we want, we know what we missed this year, so we need to make sure we improve in those areas. I think it’s an easier situation for me than last year.
“Last year the team were outstanding in League One and we gave everyone the possibility to prove themselves in the Championship.
“We have been in the Championship now so we know what we need. Now we have got the chance to make those decisions with experience, which is easier.
“For a lot of the time in the play-off final Blackpool were the best team but West Ham won. Why? Because of the quality and the power. The other two teams that went up, Southampton and Reading, were very powerful.
“We are going to try to get that power. If you mix power and quality it’s expensive. How we are going to do it I don’t know but we’ll try.”
Poyet wants to add five players to the squad. He refused to say in which positions but a dominant goalkeeper, fullbacks and powerful midfielder and forward are sure to be high on his wish list.
Targets have been finalised and the Seagulls are poised to step up their transfer activity.
Poyet said: “We want five for sure. The rest will depend if somebody moves. There are always surprises, like we had with Crofty (Andrew Crofts) and Benno (Elliott Bennett). You never know what is going to happen.
“We’ve had our last meeting before really pushing forward and making contact with players’ agents and clubs.
“We have been searching for information to put everything on the table, prices and contracts, then you can start moving for the players.
“Now we are in the position to start moving, which is great for me.”
Poyet has flown to Barbados to play in a PFA legends tournament for Chelsea alongside Roberto Di Matteo, Gianfranco Zola and Dennis Wise.
He played in the event last year, when Chelsea finished runners-up to Manchester United.

So the news sounds positive and we can start to see what gives.
His observations on the power / quality ratio make a lot of sense and most would agree with him.
Suggests Liam Trotter would be a possible target as already suggested elsewhere on this forum.
Either way, Gus can now happily relax and take a few days out while the David Burke works his contract magic!

Incidentally, the 5 man target fits in with what the great and the good of this site have suggested we need.

That's a word I've been waiting to hear.
We often looked a bit fragile against the likes of the top three sides mentioned. If there is to be a serious attempt to match the best in the division, the most effective strategy is to target players from those clubs, who have the power and experience to make us contenders.
Power combined with skill, - Vicente has it, although he isn't massive. Heskey has divided opinion on this forum, but would anyone prefer Sam Vokes to Emil? Maybe he's out of our range, but he's the type of player we should be looking at.
Are there any more undiscovered Rickie Lamberts out there? Incredible scoring record. Power personified, and never played higher than League one until he was 29! However skillful, the signing of players like Gai Assulin would not convince me that the power problem was being addressed.
Millwall have power, and they gave some of the top sides a scare, including us. They have players on quite a few of our wish lists.
There could be some surprise players becoming available depending on the financial condition of various Championship clubs. Birmingham City have been operating under a transfer embargo for several months, because of a failure to submit their annual accounts. They will be desparate to hold on to the players they have, but if the accounts are bad news when they eventually appear, players could be available.
Cardiff's widely reported £100million investment by the Malaysian owners is now under review, apparently because fans opposed a shirt colour change from blue to red, planned by the Malaysian owners, (as a re-brand to appeal to the far East, and with a dragon logo).
It hasn't stopped them from taking on players though, as they've just signed Joe Lewis from Posh. That's one who's slipped through the net. I wonder if we showed any interest?
Good 'keeper, and at 6'6'', and 13st 5lbs, powerful too!

Interesting that he mentions bringing in 5 players unless somebody leaves in which case the number increases. I say interesting since 5 was the number of loan signings we had at the end of the season (Reyes, Mattock, Razac, Assulin and Vokes).
I don't think it is unreasonable to suppose that it is in the positions those players play that Poyet will now look to recruit.
However I do hope that he will recruit a top class keeper - perhaps if Ankergren were to leave...
With Poyet away in the West Indies I am not expecting any hard news on recuitment until after the Jubilee holiday.
If Poyet intends getting new players in in time for preseason as he has stated then there should be lots of action after 5 June.
I for one will be pleased once this quiet period ends and we get some real news for a change.
With the way Season ticket sales have been going Poyet should have a reasonable budget to work with.

In the euphoria of the Amex opening I thought, a season ticket for GBP 30 a month? I'll have some of that! Even though I couldn't go to every game I wanted a ticket to show my support. I would even come back to the UK more often and time it for home games.
What is the number of ST holders? Something like 18,000? It's incredible and puts us up there with Premiership clubs. Ahead of a few, I dare say.
Eventually I will work out how to get on the waiting list and if the club introduce a scheme, common at other clubs, where you can sell on the ticket via the club, so much the better. They get guaranteed income from me and my costs can be reduced when I can't make it to the game. Win win situation all round, I would say.
I have seen the Albion on the telly and the empty seats have puzzled me, bearing in mind the games have mostly been sold out. Needless to say I am very much in favour of a seat exchange scheme.

Ken in Spain wrote:20,000 season ticket holders is what I have heard there will be when the season begins, which is pretty impressive and way above many Premier League clubs! With the extra seats going in, it should give you more options as things pan out. I too was puzzled at the empty seats which supposedly reflect season ticket holders who do not show up. Also there is always a cluster in the east stand, which cover absent corporate options as well as schools etc. Good luck with getting to see a few more games if you can. Might give you a justifiable reason to take some more week end breaks!
Good to see the new seats going into the Amex. When the ticket prices were originally announced I seriously considered applying, even though I live in Spain. I quickly realised that as I had not been a regular at Withdean I was bottom of the list. That was more than fair in my view.

I was back in the UK last August and just had to make a pilgrimage to the Amex. It was a Sunday, the place wasn't open but the security staff were excellent. I explained that I was visiting from Spain and just had to see it. I was with my son and grandson. She let us park up and wander round. It was wonderful. My grandson has now declared himself to be a Brighton supporter. I am afraid there is no hope for my son, even though I took him to the Goldstone as a nipper. Can't win them all!
Hilarious that you have so much to say on all things BHA and put down genuine attendees like me who are season ticket holders when you yourself don't even have one.
My payment supports the club all year round. Parking up on a Sunday for a freebie look around does nothing for your so called team.
Before you make derogatory comments about people on this site remember they are the people who financially support the club at every game whether it's through season tickets, cold pies, stale beer or greasy burgers.
Too much paella and too many warm San Miguel's on your part I think.

I believe they rang the club first and I imagine that for someone living where you do one could arrange everything over the phone.
Whether any season tickets are still available I don't know but one of the people I refer to above only phoned the club 9 or 10 days ago to 'express their interest' in a season ticket.
Good luck if you try to get one.

Then instead of getting a season ticket, just purchase your individual game tickets when they go on general sale to fans without loyalty points a week or two before the game, when you come over to the UK.
With all the extra seats going in it is a good opportunity for everyone who is limited to only a few games a season to purchase tickets individually a few days in advance, or even on match day.

Thanks for all the good advice, very welcome. I even got a bite from HPR. Ha, ha! Can't understand why he is so touchy. I would love to be a seating steward at the Amex.
On a footballing note; just give me a midfield general and a forward who is a tad more direct and i'll be happy.
See you (looking at) in the West stand HPR...

We should have an Argus shindig in Dick's Bar one matchday!
I could write some songs, Ken could dance The Flamenco and Hove Park Residue could keep the toilets clean (as usual)!
We must make sure to avoid talking to him though...distracting him from his work might lose him his "season ticket"....strollin' strollin' strollin'....
By the way, i've just (unusually) read a post of his (couldn't resist for once) and apparently the pies are cold! I suppose the crusts are by the time he fishes them out from under the seats post match.
