CMS turns down Olympic chance

Take a break: Craig Mackail-Smith will not be going to the Olympics Take a break: Craig Mackail-Smith will not be going to the Olympics

Albion's Scotland international striker Craig Mackail-Smith has rejected the chance to represent Team GB at the London Olympics.

Mackail-Smith was placed on the shortlist for the squad by coach Stuart Pearce but wants to save his energy for the Seagulls and his country.

He told the Scotland Herald: “I was involved in the play-offs last season (with Peterborough) so didn’t have much time to rest then and it has been a long, hard season this time.

“I could have been tired for next season, I could have got injuries and it could have caused a lot of problems.

“There are so many games in every league you play in and you have to make sure you are prepared to perform well.”

Mackail-Smith is preparing for Scotland’s friendly against USA in Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning as Craig Levein’s side gear up for their World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins against Serbia at Hampden Park on September 8.

Fair enough. Would probably not have made the final cut anyway. The Olympics to a professional footballer is not as important as it is to a lot of other sports.

I would have thought playing a pointless friendly in the heat of Florida would have been more tiring than a tournament up the road in London. Does make me laugh how the poor little love go's on about being tired. Isn't he a professional sportsman? It wasn't as if he started or played every game this season. Try telling the bin man who does a 50-60 week he's tired.

Nice to see a player put his club and country first and have a bit of savvy to look towards what is to come when the season starts.

It amazes me how anyone can compare a top level footballer who pushes his body to its limits week in and week out to any other profession. I guess ignorance is bliss.

I haven't come across any 50-60 hour a week bin men. They start early yes, then spend long breaks having tea, the pub for an hour and then off home. Anyone seen a bin man around in the afternoon?

At least we know now why HPR talks rubbish - he's a bin man.

You haven't made allowances for the palace troll. What a sad, unfulfilled life it must have if its highlight is coming on here for the attention it clearly lacks. Probably knocks one out for every thread it ruins.

I'm sorry, but I don't really get it. Just look at tennis players who might have to play four or five hours one day then four or five again the next day. In an individual sport that is as mentally demanding as it is physically demanding. And their season runs from January to November. Footballers, even Brighton footballers are supposed to be professional athletes and should be able to manage to play 90 minutes on a Saturday, the occasional Tuesday and the odd training session without complaining of tiredness. Man up boys!!

Who cares about football at the Olympics ? In 1999 I saw a copy of a telex from Fifa to the IOC proposing FUTSAL be included as an Olympic sport (as it was already a so called discipline of football). 13 years later still no futsal in the Olympics but an amateur football event which will excite nobody. No wonder Brasil and Argentine futsal are separating from their football partners this year, like so many other countries have already done....oh the politics of sport ! FIFA how long do you need to get your head out of your rectums ............. ?

I was a bin man once. Cushiest job I ever had. Assemble at 7.30, go in the cart to a cafe for breakfast until 8.45. Start round. Go to Sheepcote tip at 10.15 to empty cart and more bacon sandwiches. Start out on second round at 11.00. Back to Sheepcote to empty cart at 12.15. Call in at tot shop to sell any copper/lead/other metal on way back to depot. Sign off at depot around 12.45. All in all we actually worked around 3-3.5 hours a day. Nearly everyone had other jobs in the afternoon. If you think bin men put in a 60 hour shift you are seriously mistaken. Way off the mark HPR like your knowledge of football !!!!

You don't really get it because you clearly know nothing about the physiological demands of sport.

Heartily agreed.

HPR only posts because others feed his/her ego, then site just becomes flooded with personal stuff and its purpose is lost. Sad people and a shame, really.

I'll miss the speculation and the lists, but by dropping this site off my favorites, I'm sure I'll catch nearly all actual news, and give myself a bit more time each day by just keeping an eye on Cfax.

Good decision by cms. Olympic football means very little in the football world. Rest now, avoid any silly injuries,, score a hat full next season, and premiership awaits.

Wow, great news. I could be wrong, but didn't you spend a big chunk of the season saying we'd never get more than 16,000?

Very interesting.

On the one hand it's heartening to know the ambition to maximise our potential is still at the forefront of Mr Chairman's thinking, but it's also gutting to know we could have upscaled our original master plan from the off.

Would now be costly and subject to intense planning scrutiny again if we ever tried to increase the capacity beyond 30,750.

Still, and eventual figure of 23,000 STHs this season will be superb.

Our ground will next season usurp seven Prem Lge club grounds: WBA, Stoke, QPR, Fulham, Wigan(?), Reading, Norwich and Swansea.

We are ready to fulfil our destiny and return to the good ole days.

Captain Haddock says...

*meant to say several, not seven*
