Gus still waiting on his top targets

Happy: Poyet Happy: Poyet

Gus Poyet today insisted his top transfer targets are still up for grabs.

But he is not going to rush into a signing just to keep fans happy.

Poyet is keeping a close eye on the summer market as he enjoys time back home in Uruguay.

He accepts fans will be getting impatient for new arrivals but said: “We are on the way. We need to think things over.

“There are so many things. It’s difficult to explain why signings happen and don’t happen.

“You look at the things that are better for you, that are on the table, the quality ones, and then the one time they are available you really need to go for them.

“Then if you lose out on your No.1 target, there is a No.2 target.

“I’m talking about the No.1 targets in our situation, within our budget, in our league. They are still there.

“But I’m not going to sign anyone just for the sake of signing.”

Poyet’s priorities include a return for Spanish playmaker Vicente plus quality around him and he is keen to add physical power to his side.

Danny Swanson, the talented but tiny attacking midfielder linked with the Seagulls, looks set to join Peterborough on a two-year deal.

So absolutely no change or news since last week?! However, I remember the same process last year so we will have to wait and be patient, because signings WILL come................
.....eventually!
P.S I wish the journalists could be spared the need to "find" something newsworthy and write when there really is something to report!

Gus is correct, while we would like to have all our transfer business done by 30/06, this is very hard to achieve and we must not be drawn into panic signings. We Brighton fans are extremely knowledgeable and we are certainly very very patient and we a fully aware the process of signing the correct player, our first or second choice will take time, it is no problem for us. I have absolute confidence in GP, Chairman Bloom and the board to get the right people in.

And Bridcutt off to Reading for £2M (with Villa and Fulham waiting in the wings...). Try to keep up guys.

Liam Bridcutt will probably go to Reading for around £2 million. They are in the Premier League and Reading's his home town. We will get Liam Trotter from Millwall to replace him.

Liam is not a Reading fan despite being born there. What will tempt him is a step that might take him back to Chelsea which is his footballing love. Betting is we will ask him to stay and if we are not challenging in January we will listen to offers so as not to stand in his way of stepping up to the premier league. Trotter would not be a replacement as he is a) more a central/attacking midfielder b) wanted by Southampton and more likely to go there than to us.

Wonder if our Egypt International was born in Brighton?
There was no mention of it in the last article about him.

And will we ever know if his father is from Egypt?

My guess is that there is some family connection.
Maybe we'll never know.

When asked why he he turned down a request to become manager of Uruguay, Gus is rumoured to have said, ''We are third in the FIFA World Rankings, so I don't think there is much further I can take them.''

Seconded !
Poyet is still in Uruguay on holiday and whilst deals might be 'agreed' in his absence I imagine they will only be finalised once he returns.
I have heard that the club has sold over 21,000 season tickets. A report on the club website confirms that more than 3,000 NEW season tickets have already been sold. The final one thousand season tickets go on general sale next week.
The club reports that BHA are ranked 10th in terms of season ticket sales out of all clubs in both the Premiership and the Football League - quite an achievement. Well done the Seagulls fans ! Definately a story worth reporting.

There is a real sense of deja vu here on the transfer front from last season. Let's hope things get going to prove me wrong.

Swanson is no loss.

GP is waiting on his top targets and there still available. I know transfers take time until all parties are happy but if there top targets for Brighton there going to be for other clubs as well so unless approaches have been made and negotiations started, what is GP waiting for?

Only from the perspective that Gus went all defensive about performance and budgets mid-season.

If you recall he reckoned the club had the 17th largest budget in the division and therefore no-one should expect a position higher than 17th.

A comment which did make you question whether or not he was quite the rising star everyone thought he was.

But then again it may have been a lost in translation moment.

I think the thing is he raises expectations and then seems to disappoint with the end result.

None of the permanent signings actually made last year performed as hoped for whether through injury (Buckey, Vicente, Hoskins) or actual performance (Harley, Mckail-Smith, Lualua)

I guess a lot of managers and footballers are still on holiday and maybe it is those 'lovely' agents who are doing work behind the scenes and therefore fuelling the 'rumours'. I hope Gus is back in Brighton soon and then things will start to move---once that happens we can expect a decision from Vicente. As has been said-imo--Swanson is no loss---not many 'small' forwards in the Premiership, and that is what we should be building for.

Talking of small, rumours are afoot that Gui Assulin will sign. He's clearly got something, but I'd put him behind Vicente, Bucks and Lua Lua in the queue for a starting place as a creative midfielder. Have been hoping for something a little different but hopefully he'll prove me wrong if he does sign.

There might not be many, but how about Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe for two that aren't bad? I agree the Albion need more power but size ain't necessarily everything.
