Albion see off Barnsley interest in skipper

BARNSLEY have called off their unlikely quest to tempt Albion skipper Gordon Greer to Oakwell – even though they still need an on-field leader.

The Seagulls’ Championship rivals have had two bids turned down for the 31–year-old Scot, one of which was believed to be in five figures.

Now Keith Hill has confirmed they do not expect to go back in for Greer, who cost Albion £250,000 in 2010 and has a year left on his contract.

The Barnsley boss said: “Gordon Greer is a player that I admire a lot.

“I wanted to bring him to Barnsley but we have made two bids that have both been rejected by Gus Poyet and Brighton so we won’t bid again.

“He is a leader and a manager on the pitch and we don’t have someone like that which was very obvious at points last season.

"We will now move on from Gordon and look for other players like that."

Poyet recently told The Argus: “Gordon he is the captain of the football club so it would take something incredible for us to consider selling him.”

The Albion boss is prepared for interest in his players.

Right-back Inigo Calderon this week dismissed reports linking with him with three other Championship clubs.

Meanwhile, Reading are said to be interested in holding midfielder Liam Bridcutt.

no comment on the speculation regarding free agent goalkeeperThomasz Kuzsczak then?
Emile Heskey looks like he is signing for Hull (some people thought we might look at him as an experienced front man following Reading's success with Roberts in a similar role last season.
Joe Mattock seems destined for Sheffield Wednesday in what might be a slightly more surprising "miss" by the Albion.
Liam Trotter is interesting promoted Southampton.
And Gai Assulin is reportedly destined to return to Israel to play.

Are all our number one targets still available? Who knows?

You're a naughty boy Alfie, getting everyone's hopes up! Shame about Mattock, liked him and not many decent left sided full backs about at the moment, Painter struggled last season, pace is his problem.Really hope Kuzsczak is still a target if not already signed, Trotter would have been ideal for us,not much to cheer about at the moment. Still, wouldn't change anything Albion for the world, just gotta be patient.

If there was ever a nothing story it was Barnsley thinking they could possibly sign Greer!

Oh well, it looks like we're stuck with him then. Let's hope he pulls his finger out and makes a much better effort than last season.

Quality and inspirational, glad he stays at least for one more season before we reach the premiership.

I really like Keith Hill but with all due respect to him they've completely embarrassed themselves bidding for Greer.

Was never EVER going to happen! The bids were derisory in the extreme and having visited us last season surely he could see for himself the gulf in potential our clubs have.

Genuinely gobsmacked they'd even bothered to try unless they'd bagged a Russian oligarch to bankroll crazy wages.

None of the players listed above have actually signed for anyone. All the information out there about these players is also pure speculation, a lot of it through "rumours" sites. Don't be so negative, it's the beginning of June, not August.

What is strange is that someone with such a good footballing brain who is able to so eruditely detail Greer's virtues could then make such a pitiful financial offer. Surprising and frankly insulting that he can say "here is the man who has all the characteristics we need to complete our team" and then offer a derisory 50% or so of his transfer fee to us (let alone the accrued added value from some exceptional performances).

It's a strange one. Gus says GG is our captain and vital yet he still has only one year left and has to wait like everyone else for a new contract.

Meanwhile Reading are interested in Bridders. Has Navs got fixed up with a new club yet?

I think we should sign Ollie Garch.

Barnsley got McNulty from us for very little - does anyone know how much? Great left back for us before injury, but now their player the season at centre back. IMO a mistake of Poyet to prefer Painter to him. Barnsley were just seeing if they could get lucky again.

Correction... Mattock has signed for the owls. Disappointing, he was a competent defender.

Agree, another good player bites the dust and won't be playing for us. Over the last cpl of weeks all were hearing about is players like Greer, Bridcott, Calderon and Hall are interesting others....I know GP keeps signings to himself but l don't think he is giving another way in reporting the early or advanced talks are underway with players.

Yes, he used to be on the left wing (hugging the touchline) but now plays central and up top.

Worth a packet!

I understood at the time that we got about £50K for McNulty. Navs tweeted that he had a meeting with a club manager this week about a potential deal. He and his wife have now gone on their hols so guess he and we will have to wait a while to see where he gets fixed up. Looking good for him though. Not being negative Ringmert Rich but actually making the same(ish) point as you. We don't know who the targets are and wont until they sign.....same as last summer. Meanwhile it is all speculation.
