Mattock joins Wednesday

Off to the Owls: Joe Mattock Off to the Owls: Joe Mattock

Former Albion loanee Joe Mattock has opted to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Mattock, released recently by West Brom, has joined the Championship newcomers on a three-year deal.

The former Leicester man played 15 games for the Seagulls in the later weeks of last season.

Albion boss Gus Poyet said of Mattock recently: “He is one of our options because we know him well. He was always on our list as a left-back cover or to challenge with Marcos Painter. We will consider him. But, yes, it could be difficult (to sign him)."

Albion have been linked with Polish free agent Tomasz Kuszczak.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper is currently enjoying a Mediterannean holiday and a source close to the player believes he has yet to make a decision on his next footballing destination.

Kuszczak earned excellent reviews during loan stints at West Brom and, more recently, Watford.

Mmm. Thought he looked a decent player for us last season but Gus seemed to be only lukewarm. Hopefully he has someone else in mind as Painter looked out of his depth on occasions at Championship level. Interesting times ahead!

Yes let's hope so. I too am apprehensive though as LB is a very weak position for us.

Gutted about Mattock; thought we had at last found a decent left back. Still even though Gus is leaving it late as usual he will get his men in the end. We just have to be patient. I think the man is Top Class and can do no wrong for me.

Players are contracted until the end of june. If they dont have a club at that point the existing club is contractually obliged to pay them a redundency paymet. This why players by and large dont sign for new clubs until july. Ones that do have usually done a deal with the old or new club to compensate this payment. so please relax and watch the signings unfold once the players have returned from their pay off holidays.

Yep, agree. I liked him and thought he'd be a cert to sign, particularly as no fee involved. I suppose the move takes him close to his home area which probably suits him and his family. Also, Wednesday may have offered wages close or better than what he could command as a non regular at WBA. Like Brighton (I hope), Wednesday will try and push on next season, with big gates and tradition, even if their ground is an absolute dump.

Just hope to god Gus didn't tell him he'd be 'challenging Painter' for the left back spot. That's about as far away from a vote of confidence as you could get.

Mattock did a good job for us last season, except at Donny with that handball that cost us the game.

Disappointing that he isn’t joining us but this is not the signing that will make or break next season for us. I would suggest Gus has a number or more important targets and whatever happens we will have a squad capable of challenging for promotion.

Anyway good luck to Joe and keep working on those ball skills.

Moving on from the idiot.....Mattock was a good and reliable loan option for us last season without again probably having an extra gear to make him exceptional. As a released player he obviously has to get the best option available to him and if Sheffield Wednesday suits best financially and geographically then sobeit. Would be surprised if they were challengers next season. Didn't get the impression that he was that high up Gus's wish list, so no surprise to see him move elsewhere.

Looks like the club are aiming higher than Mattock. He is a good championship player but he didn’t cut it in the premiership and that’s where we are going. We will need players with the capacity to develop and thrive in the top flight.

On a different note just for a moment; I have now received at least three letters from the club asking me to consider purchasing a season ticket, despite having already done so. Now, I guess many others have received the same letter. My concern is simply the cost to the club of all this wasted postage. Ok, perhaps not enough to have an effect on the purchase of players , but could have implications in respect of being able to afford enough loo rolls in the toilets, particularly after eating one of those pies.

Firstly, HOVEPARKRESIDENT, is there not a palace website you can go and join your friends on and let the decent, loyal, true Albion fans crack on with discussing their team in peace?
My god you're boring!
Secondly, and more importantly, I can't see that Mattock was ever one of Gus's potential signings. Yes he played ok for us, but way too easy to skin, how many times did wingers/strikers make him look like he was glued to the floor?!
We desperately need a replacement for Painter who looks out of his depth at champ level, but I honestly believe Gus has someone better lined up.

rolivan says...
12:56pm Sat 9 Jun 12

Maybe he signed for S.W because he was offered a 3 year contract and the Albion have got expectations of getting in the Premiership and do not want too many players tied up on long contracts if they might not have a long term future. There were over 140 players released from Premiership clubs perhaps that is where the club are concentrating their efforts.

Hovite says...

I would have thought that choosing a club closer to family and friends was also a contributing factor. Sheffield Wednesday is a club that is of the moment so it is not a bad move for him, but we can see how well he does for them next season.

Have to say thought Mattock did ok for us, Though G.P seems to rate Painter as a bench mark player to judge other contenders for that position. I agree with some posters that we need a solid experienced keeper, and a tall striker who can get 20/ 25 goals a season. We've got a harder season in prospect, with some strong sides coming up and down. I'm trusting G.P. is working on those positions.

Some may say we could have offered 6 or 7 and we may have got him but look at Murray 12k a week and he cant get in their team! Gus was right on that one so i trust his judgement on Mattock. No doubt the LB position will be added to, if they really wanted him they would have got him, no doubt, what is more important is the goal keeping position, better to spend the bigger money there, good keepers are difficult to come by. Interesting weeks ahead!

Gus has already said that we need to pay more in salaries to sign better quality players. If we are not going to use the extra seating income to improve on salaries we will have to trawl Div 1 and 2 or Premier League released players! When we signed CMS, he had already spoken to Leicester and West Ham. He chose us for footballing reasons, so we either paid the going salary rate to get him or money was not the issue? He did come from Peterborough so we probably pay more than them! In essence Gus is right!

If I was Joe Mattock, I wouldn't be very happy about my dad passing information around about my financial situation. Can I ask also, how you know Murray has a wage of 12K a week.
Murray's dad told him :)

Mattock was a good player and personally I wish him well ,but he was not a Left back who you would rely on to do a left backs job ,he was good at getting forward with the ball I agree and had a nice touch ,but was let down by his ability to tackle and mark and get into players and pass the ball out.We have players who can take the ball forward we dont need another left back that does it ,just one who wins tackles and gets the ball out of danger. So to my mind the right result has been achieved as Gus will find a true Left back of quality I have no doubt .

I do not think that Mattock is a big loss. Yes he was an adequate Championship player, but was caught out on many occasions. He would do a job for us, however I suspect that Gus has stronger targets in mind to provide the basis of a promotion chasing side. However, the wait for positive news of any sort is a source of minor anxiety and I hope that my trust in Gus's position is well founded!!

What an utterly ridiculous comment. Although I rarely comment, I read this site regularly. Although HPR does have differing views to some on this website I have never seen a personal attack or any abusive comments from him/her. I agree with the earlier poster who mentioned Vincelot as a left back. He has more nous than Painter and likes to get forward.

Whatever, I hope that now we're back to 7 subs that Vincelot makes the match day squad more often as his utility players attributes are really useful and he gives everything for the cause. He was one of the unlucky ones who didn't really get the breaks last year and could offer something different to the team

The reality is that we will not be attracting players whose lifelong ambition was to play for B&HA, but those who see the balance of Club ambition, playing opportunity, and financial package as acceptable.
Professional footballers are paid good money to 'play for the shirt', whatever its colour, and any who don't deliver are unlikely to get many first team appearances.
Joe Mattock was on his way to Portsmouth in January, until they suddenly stopped paying the players' wages, and that was when B&HA took him on loan for the remainder of the season. Why would he want to play for us if another club offered him more?
To call a player 'mercenary' as an uncomplimentary remark is a little naiive when considering The Game in 2012.
I don't know if Glenn Murray was 'playing for the shirt' when he scored 22 goals for us last season, but if that kind of form can be replicated, I would welcome a few more mercenaries!

Perhaps not, but we don't pay anywhere near the wages that these guys have been earning, Mattock signed for Wednesday because of money. It's still the biggest motivator in what can be a short professional career.

There has been no suggestion that B&HA were interested in signing Mattock, never mind going as far as to make him an offer.
Until there has been some transfer activity, the only people with any knowledge of the wage structure for the forthcoming season are the Club's Owner and management.

It was clear to all Albion fans and the management that our keeper situation was costing us, it's critical that the back four has confidence in the man between the sticks so perhaps his wages are worth the investment, IMO obviously.

As I said earlier 140 players were released by Premiership Clubs so that is an average of 7 per club which would mean that if every Championship Club took on 6 of those each they would have a chance of playing. It is all very well saying we don't pay Premiership wages but if these players want to be earning, and I am sure their agents want them to be for obvious reasons, then they will have to take a reality check or be out of work.

So maybe not worth getting on contract. Big changes needed for the team to get higher than the tenth spot of last season. Keeper, Left back, center Mid and 2 forwards, at least one to play along side CMS. I do hope Worthing come in for a bid for Barnes. !!

I don't know whether or not Gus is still away in Uruguay, but in terms of signing players, I believe it isn't necessary for managers to be on hand as most of the negotiating is done between CEO and the players agent. Managers just give a wish list within arranged budgets and can speak with players on their mobile, online etc, etc, probably doing the face to face stuff only after the deal is agreed. I understand that clubs themselves employ agents in many cases.
On a different tack, I was looking for any championship news on the BBC website and spotted a list of the twenty four teams who make up the division this coming season (what a sad old git I've become) and realistically (or not) I would think there are at least fifteen teams who's supporters think their team have a decent chance of at least making the play offs and are probably all chasing the same players to sign, in many cases. What another exciting and tight season it's likely to be.

This is a PUBLIC forum where people can post pretty much whatever they like. HPR hasn't broken any rules, or even insulted anyone. To suggest their posts should be monitored is, quite frankly, pathetic.

In the Paul Barber/David Dean story, I asked BBA on what grounds he was previously going to report HPR, and he went strangely quiet. Here's another opportunity for him.

Agree Alfie, there would be a few on here hoping for a 7mil flop, only for Adkins and not our Saints fans.

If we are vying with other clubs for a player's signiature, I believe it is vital for there to be a meeting between manager and player.
For example would Vicente have become an Albion player without Gus having the opportunity to sell the club philosophy and style of play to him on a personal level?
And what about CMS? perhaps negotiations with the CEO, followed by a text from Gus would have tempted him? (''Would be gr8 2 have you here Craig'').

You are probably right about the supporters of at least fifteen teams looking at top six, - very similar to the season just gone.
It will no doubt be just as competitive, and many sides will be far more expensively assembled.
To stand any chance of staying at the front of the pack, we will be relying on astute signings and the superior management skills of Gus Poyet.

Well said, and you are probably right mate.
Thank you. I am.
Yep, this is true, he only appears on this site to in defense of the Troll / himself, just to draw it out and piggybacks comments, and to date this user hasn't said anything Albion connected despite his Seagull name. Trolls set up multi usernames, though it is weirdly interesting seeing the lengths they go to, it is like they fantasise about the next reaction or the next attempt for a reaction.

I just don’t know why the Trolls have a perverted dedication to do, it's a bit like dogging is probably even getting off on this comment.
Blimey, if this is what happens in the off season, hurry up August. If this is what people are now resorting to in real life, then there is no hope!

I'm not associated with (or even the same person as) either of them, but I still think that Billyboyarnold's comments are a little bit sad.

I cannot say that HPR and BHAFCSeagull are the same person because, unlike brightonup, I don't personally know both of them, so I couldn't possibly comment.

But for the record, the first thing I thought when I read Crawleydownseagull's post was that it could have the same origin as HPR.

As I've said before, if you are THAT worried about an internet poster, maybe you should have a word with yourself...
"Cabin fever" your right, or should I call you "Swine fever", we are taking this far too serious, just had to have my cat put down, (No she was far too heavy, that's all), say what you like I don't give a s*it anymore, all I know is I have been loyal since 1961 and I will be there next season. Come on you "Super Seagulls". Brighton Bill Yorkshire Seagull and Real Ale expert.

And Cabin, as opposed to Swine, is preferable thanks.

Cabin, All posts are monitored, any personal remarks are noted, and any individual can be held responsible, it is easy to trace individuals, in the past HPR has made personal remarks that is why some of his comments have been removed.

Gordongull, I'm not saying it isn't important for the manager to meet any hoped for signings, of course it is. What I was (unsuccessfully) attempting to say was that managers do not have to get involved in the minutiae and details of a deal.If that was the case then they'd likely have to remain behind their desk at all times. I suspect that any players on Gus's wanted list are well aware now of his interest via their agents, the media and other outlets.Thats not to say though that Gus's prowess and burgeoning reputation won't be needed in many cases to ensure the satisfactory closure of deals and the sooner he's back the better I'm sure.

Gus became disenchanted when Mattock missed a game through his shaving accident down below. You cant have that kind of person playing for Brighton and remember Gus comes from a deeply Catholic country

Agree absolutely!
We can't have players who have demonstrated such an alarming lack of skill playing for the Albion.

Btw, what has religion got to do with it?

If that's the case, I don't think he/she's got anything to worry about. Any negative personal remarks from HPR (and I can't recall many, if any) are far outweighed by the character assassination, name-calling and general vitriol going in the opposite direction.

This includes your own suggestion that he/she is "probably not working".

Let him without sin, and all that

If HPR is, as some people have concluded a "professional troll", the aim of which is, apparently, to wind people up on an internet forum, he is very, very good!

Take your point about free speech.
... but does this person really need or warrant the warm defence you have put forward. I am trying to make a case people like me and young son who are tired of the predictable set of negative set of comments (the same message over and over again). The real achievement of HPR is to create disharmony between Albion supporters and rally defenders of who claim what he does is an exercise in free speech. Sorry, I disagree with that judgment.
