Vicente can punish Pompey again
Albion are giving Vicente another chance to punish Portsmouth.
The Spanish star will play today as Albion take on a makeshift looking Pompey side in a friendly in Jerez (5pm BST).
Vicente scored twice against Portsmouth in the Championship in March but his presence today is purely intended to get him much-needed game time.
He missed the first week of pre-season training and worked on his fitness until being given a first run out in the first half at Hastings on Saturday.
Boss Gus Poyet expects to give some players a full 90 minutes today for the first time this summer but Marcos Painter, Craig Mackail-Smith and Wayne Bridge will not feature.
Poyet said: “In normal conditions Vicente is going to play.
“He hasn’t been playing, he needs some games.
“Don’t try and read too much from who plays. We are just looking at who needs games and who has been playing a lot.”
As doubts over the future of their club continue, Pompey will field a collection of youngsters and trialists similar to that which was humbled 4-0 by Gibraltar on Friday.
They have since added one of the home side that night, midfielder Liam Walker, to their list of trialists.
Poyet insists today’s fixture remains a worthwhile exercise.
He added: “There is always something to get out of a game. It doesn’t matter about the opposition.
“It will be another important game to work on how we need to play and the basics.
“It’s a football match. It’s real.”
