Albion shine against Euro champs

David Luiz and Ashley Barnes clash before Andrew Crofts goes through to score David Luiz and Ashley Barnes clash before Andrew Crofts goes through to score

Ashley Barnes scored and was involved in two other goals as Albion impressed against Chelsea today.

Vicente and Andrew Crofts also netted as the Seagulls won 3-1, despite falling behind to a Frank Lampard strike.

The result and performance delighted most of a crowd of 17,149 at The Amex.

Chelsea went ahead on 35 minutes when Fernando Torres’s clever dummy allowed Lampard to run on to Ramires’s pass and roll a shot past Tomasz Kuszczak.

But the Seagulls were level just two minutes later through Vicente.

The Spanish star moved on to Barnes’ low pass and rolled a classy finish across Petr Cech and inside the far post.

Kuszczak kept the hosts level with a smart save low to his right after Michael Essien’s low shot took a deflection.

And Albion were ahead on 44 minutes with a thumping left-foot finish from Barnes.

Will Buckley took the chance to run at Ashley Cole and John Terry, evading both, before Cech dived at his feet to swat the ball away.

Only, though, to Barnes, who thumped a terrific left-foot finish past Cole’s effort to get back and cover on the line.

Cech tipped over a 25-yarder from Vicente after the break.

David Luiz and Eden Hazard rifled shots just too high for Chelsea and Ramires saw his close-range drive lodge between Kuszczak’s thighs.

But Albion had the last laugh with Crofts running through to slot past sub keeper Ross Turnbull as ref Dave Phillips played an advantage as Luiz fouled Barnes.

Albion: Kuszczak; Bruno, Greer, Dunk, Calderon; Bridcutt, Dicker (Harley 59), Crofts; Vicente, Buckley (Noone 65); Barnes (Agdestein (90). Subs not used: Brezovan, Ankergren, El-Abd, Sparrow, Vincelot.
Chelsea: Cech (Turnbull 65); Ivanovic, Terry (Luiz 61), Cahill, Cole; Essien, Ramires, Lampard, Meireles (Obi 46), Hazard; Torres (Lukaku 79). Subs not used: Ferreira, Hutchinson, Benayoun, Piazon.
Ref: Dave Phillips.

1910: Champions of England
2012: Champions of Europe!!!
Fantastic result. I know it's only a friendly, but would imagine even a Chelsea team playing half heartedly are still a lot better than many other Championship clubs. Great to see Vicente pulling the strings and showing his class and getting 90 mins under his belt. And fantastic for Ashley Barnes too - maybe people will get off hsi back now. Great player, totally committed to the club and runs his heart out. Hopefully some of the Olympic performances by the rowers inspired them seeing as some couldn't even stand after the effort they'd put into their sport. So excited about the new season. Don't care where we finish, but I think it will be one hell of a ride. Seagulls! Seagulls!

The best part is the result was`nt a fluke,we out played them albeit a friendly. But the class was ours,Barnes ,Vicente,Bruno were massive. All the lads were incredible, defence was really solid, and it looked like everyone was working for each other. If someone says yes but Chelsea could up a gear, iwould say so could we,fantastic performance lads,i feel sorry for Hull,....but not much ,well done Gus .UTA

Ok so it was only a friendly and Chelsea weren't really trying but overall it was an ok performance from Brighton. Vicente scored which makes everything ok now. Shame about all the empty seats and lack of atmosphere for most of the game. Pies unfortunately just the same! but got home in good time.
Overall an acceptable afternoon.

...as you see, it is probably not wise to invoke the triffids; they always have more drivel - no matter how little there is to criticise.

Excellent performance; interesting that CMS was not included; is this significant?

Watched 'Chelsea TV on the internet.
I know it was only a friendly and life will be harder once the season starts but what a great result.
A really committed performance with what appeared to me a lot more movement and less standing and slowly passing the ball like we did last season.
Barnes seems so much more effective playing up front although I am sure he is a better all round player as a result of playing in a deeper role last year.
Vicente pure class. Just hope Chelsea don't try and sign him !
Croft looked excellent and appeared to fit in seemlessly. Kuszczak was assured which must give confidence to the defence.
One back pass from the left (Dunk ?)was the only real howler I recall.
3-1 to the Albion, does that make us European Champions ? Certainly a positive return to the AMEX.

All things considered, not a bad wind-up by Stanmerparkresident.

I think the omission of CMS looks significant only because of all the media frenzy surrounding his future.
The most likely explanation is the most obvious:- his back problem hasn't cleared up yet.

Btw, welcome back!

Hi, Agree with all the positives above, also watched it in CTV. Would like to point out the ref, for a change the ref was excellent IMO, spot on with the play on decision for the third goal and I wonder if this is a pointer to how the refs are going to be for the coming season? Player goes down trying to win an Oscar and the refs didn't watch the film.

Excellent game, excellent result against some very good players (European Champions). Yes it's a friendly, but it was competitive. Our Spanish connections, Saltor, Calderon and Vicente were superb.

Hoveparkresident is spot on its just a work out for a premier side but we did well to only loose one goal, I saw the second half on vipbox and was impressed with our new goal keeper also the Spanish defender and delighted we did not repeat the walking pace defence tatic from last season.
Did we use the Olympic booking office staff, for a match that was supposed to be a sell out but had many empty seats.

Glad to see us moving the ball forward quicker this season. That's where most of the chances came from. Last season there was no such thing as a quick break away for us. Gus seems to have realized that mixing it up a bit can pay dividends.

Was a great performance and a superb result against a very strong Chelsea side.

We had a good balance and shape, moved the ball quicker and more efficiently and took our chances really well.

The preps for the season opener are building ncely.

Chelsea made a better fist of it than Newcastle or Sunderland. Their best technique was an aimless punt into the box and see of we could put the ball in our own net like Liverpool did. Great match. Tactically interesting and some skill on show, mostly from the Albion and made the GB team unwatchable later in the day.

No the trolll would be spot on if Gus, Vicente and Greer left the club 6 weeks ago. And saying that the Chelsea game was only a friendly isn't spot on, it is stating the bloomin obvious. Also that Chelsea didn't try is a complete fabrication.

Go perch on a power line Sickly, or whatever you called yourself in other posts!

Guys,
The Troll has only one objective in mind, and that is to get under your skin.
Your responses suggest that he is achieving some measure of success.
If your main concern is that some people might take him seriously, relax.

It was a sell out if you consider that the new seats are not ready yet Also the the south stand seats were empty because of the ongoing work in the south corners. Include the 2000 plus vacant seats in the south stand and we have 19-20 thousand. A full house last season. Well almost.

Re the "mystery" of the missing CMS... Anyone watched the GB Mens Four Gold Medal winning boat on Saturday? Bloke in the front is either CMS or his twin.
All this talk of a back injury has just been a cover for his secret Olympic Gold winning exploits. Probably explains why he didnt really pull up any trees last season on the pitch too.... all those early morning training sessions in the boat.
