Buckley ruled out by Albion

Will Buckley Will Buckley

Will Buckley has been ruled out of Albion's first two matches of the season and possibly for a little longer.

The speedy winger misses tomorrow night's Capital One Cup tie at Swindon and Saturday's opening Championship game at Hull with a hamstring injury sustained when he starred in the friendly win against Chelsea.

Albion's other injury absentees for the Swindon game are Craig Mackail-Smith (groin) and Will Hoskins (broken foot bone). Andrew Crofts is on Wales duty so also misses out.

Wayne Bridge and Marcos Painter are both available after missing much of pre-season but the Swindon match could come too soon for Kazenga LuaLua.

Boss Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: "Wayne is fine, Marcos Painter is fine. Kazenga's got a slight chance. He's much better.

"I think Macca is going to be a couple of days away, so he would be available for Saturday, Kazenga definitely. The one who will be an extra week is Bucker and, of course, Hoskins, who is out for a few weeks."

I can't see Vicente playing a full match and so with the other absentees this offers up an opprtunity for the likes of Spadge, Vincelot, Adgestein and maybe even the free scoring Charlie Oatway jnr to get themselves into the frame. I also thought Harley was injured - didn't feature against Creepy Crawley on Friday but not mentioned here?

Hopefully Bucks will recover soon as we look a much better side with him in the team.

Poyet's attacking options are becoming very limited it seems.
The only strikers who are fit being Barnes and young Agdestein. Then out wide the choice is effectively down to Noone. Vicente could of course be used in a 'more' forward role just behind the main striker but this is probably not the best position to play him.
It seems increasingly important, with CMS, Hoskins, Lualua doubtful and with Buckley still out, to sign the extra stiker that Poyet has been looking for. One more injury to a forward will really stretch the club.
With all the brilliant things the club are doing ie stadium, academy, recruitment of top class management, executives and medical staff, it must be frustrating not to have the squad additions that Poyet wants also on board.
It seems we have so far drawn a blank in trying to acquire another striker over the last several weeks in spite of looking on a pan European basis and still having a fair percentage of the budget left - fee for Crofts and Bridge's wages out but reported £200,000 for Elphick and compensation (unspecified) for Hall in.
I continue to see rumours about GM returning which seems a retro step. I also saw a report in the People that we were interested (?) in Alan Judge of Notts County. Even though we have signed Croft I still think we need the midfield powerhouse type Poyet said he wanted but I am not sure if Judge would fit that discription.
Glad that Poyet recognises the need for another CB now that Elphick and Hall have left. I really liked the sound of the young Arsenal lad Miquel who was being mentioned a few weeks back.
Thoughts anyone ?

Two years ago I slogged over to Northampton where our "reserves" were humbled by a not very good League 2 side. We got promoted that season.
Last year I drove the 400 miles to Brighton to watch us scrape past Gillingham. We had a good run in the cup but our league form ultimately fell away.
Tomorrow it looks like a reserve side against Swindon and as they will be well up for it our chances are probably not that good. Never mind, I will travel anyway and if we lose I will view it as a good omen.

Sorry Albion fan in London, don't agree this time!! Although the league is the most important, do you not remember the evening games at the Amex last season in League cup? Sunderland and Liverpool were fantastic occasions bringing in nearly best gates in each round. Although we are a club on the up...we still need the revenue that potential ties like this will bring. We are a championship club now and should be aiming for at least the fourth round. More to the point we are on tv as well and I for one would like to get one over on Di Canio and his boys and not having the preverbable p taken out of us by other clubs.

Crofts is with Wales this week for their Friendly against Bosnia H.
I wouldn't be surprised if Vicente played just behind Barnes up front with Bridcutt, Dicker, Sparrow and Noone in midfield.
As I think Harley is injured I am not sure there are any real alternatives other than starting with Agdestein, having Barker and Oatway Jnr. on the bench with Vicente in midfield in place of Sparrow.
The situation has been made more 'complicated' since Vincelot was ill on Friday although one imagines he will be available tomorrow.
I always want the Albion to win and hope very much that they do so tomorrow.
Firstly because the prospect of a 'money generating' tie in the next round has to help the club financially.
Secondly it should help as well with signing new players before the deadline not only fiscally but also in any newcomer possibly playing against a top premiership side as a result.

I cannot believe with all the money the club has generated over the last twelve months that we are unable to afford to buy one player. With all the new 'management' that are coming into the club I hope we are not getting to the stage where we have too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Hovite says...

Carlas mum, although we are technically not in debt, the club has still got to repay the £93 million loan back for the Amex, and although this is an interest free loan there will be financial penalties added if the money is not paid back within the agreed time period. We have to accept that we are a long way from having an open cheque book and paying unrealistic pumped up wages.

We should be first and foremost be looking to improve on last year.We do not want to become a yoyo club.It will be very interesting to see how Southampton get on.The Transfer Market is still open and there will be a lot of last minute offloading by clubs let alone those that have been released.

It is primarily important for the team to work as a well oiled machine than overspend on a player who ends up not performing.

Torres is a good example of this but Chelsea can afford to make this mistake.

I am quite impressed that the club has stuck to it's guns and not become hostage to costly panic signings.

Hovite, I quite agree that we have got to repay the loan on the Amex, but what I am saying that with 22,000 season ticket holders, the Amex being used in the week for numerous functions, and the TV rights paid to the clubs, I just find it strange that we can afford to keep employing "top people in their field" but are unable to buy one player. I couldn't agree more that we don't want to pay inflated wages and end up deep in debt and unable to pay our bills like some other clubs.

Hovite says...
4:40pm Mon 13 Aug 12

I don't know what the total income and outgoings of the club are, or if we can compare players wage demands to the top people we pay who are working in the structure of the club.

All I know is that we probably generate, as a wild guess, about £11 million in season tickets. This is before you pay out for the day to day and matchday general staff wages.

If we signed someone like Rooney, him alone would cost over £10 million a year.

Even with Bridge, Man City have to pay him £4.6 million in wages a year and we are really lucky only having to pay £525k towards it.

I think Kuzszak is going to cost £5 million over 2 years and that's also a good deal when balanced with a free transfer and the position he plays.

Interesting quote from Poyet saying that we still have a chance with 2 of our top 3 targets for a striker.
I wonder not only who the 2 who are still potentially available are but also the one that isn't. Poyet's remark about playing for a club one day and against them a few days later leads me to speculate that the players he is tracking are with Championship clubs.
Add the CB that Poyet is reported in the Argus as wanting now Elphick has left and potentially one more midfielder and it looks as if there should be lots of transfer activity by 31 August.
Given we only have 2 fit strikers currently I hope the Albion get another forward in sooner rather than later.

Southwick seagull says...

Patience still required, even though we are all desperate to know who we are going to get. Its a chess game at this stage of the season and Gus will no doubt have options as the transfer deadline approaches.
As far as the Swindon game is concerned, we can put out a similar formation to that which got the better of Chelsea so theres plenty of room for cautious optimism. If we can win it and get a decent home draw against a Premiership side, that might go towards a decent down payment on that new striker who is waiting in the wings!

When he sat down in the Chelsea game and then went off injured you really did get the impression it was a bad one. He won't play now until at least mid September. He is injury prone as he was with Watford. But when he is fit and playing he makes a huge difference. Really bad loss.

We still get too many injuries and you just wonder if the training regime has something to do with it, which I find astonishing given the depth and apparent knowledge of the training and medical staff now on the books.

We need reinforcements!!

As probably the only seagull living in a desert I would like to thank all of you for the posts you have put up, I get a lot of pleasure reading what you think about our team.

Gus has a problem and we all know what it is, players and their agents think that we have big and deep pockets but we don't. Having said that I doubt anyone that we have not been able to sign was even in GP's plans. I happen to think that the players that have slipped past us were opportunist signings, had we got them great but if we didn't well then we carry on negotiating for our original targets.
I am not sure if CMS will stay, it could be that his sale will finance our future purchases, I only say this because of his reported injury and the lack of info coming from the club with regard to his progress. I hope I am wrong as I think CMS will turn out to be special and if we get promotion we will need him.

My guess would be that three players will join us this at some point this season. A proven striker, sooner rather than later. Another proven mid-field player, no great rush, and as GP has said, a central defender, sooner rather than later.
Sorry that this was so long but it is my first post and I could have made it longer.

My guess is that it stems from the rumour that we would re sign a former player, which turned out to be Crofts.
The more optomistic version of the Murray rumour is Zamora.
The more pessimistic version is Leon Knight.

Alan Judge is the complete opposite of a powerhouse midfielder: he's shortish, nippy, very skilful and likes to rove (into inside channels).

Has scoring boots and is a VERY strong prospect. Delighted if the suggested links with him have meat on the bone (but have no insider info on that one).

Miquel, now that Tommy has left, becomes a reasonably strong possibility. Been linked twice before this summer and would be a great replacement.

The striker deal may be (very) imminent and as I suggested in an earlier thread will divide opinion if it does transpire.

Agree with you, Conelli.

Also it's worth noting that despite (possibly genuinely) apathetic vibes from Gustavo regards the cups, we don't seem to do early exits from the cup!

Being a season opener against tough opposition, with us carrying significant numbers of injured absentees, the above trend could suffer an exception to the rule tomorrow. I sincerely hope not, especially given the presence of the SKY cameras and a (proper) footy-starved general public looking for their "armchair kicks", but we will have a tough task ahead.

It is my hope that we don't get scared of playing one or two of our young players, judging by what I have read, some of these lads look to have real talent. We have Vincente for another season and I really hope that he signs up for more but more than that I hope we keep him after he hangs up his boots. The amount of knowledge this man can pass on to future players is off the scale. We should certainly be thinking about using his experience in the years to come even if it was as a european scout should he choose to move back to Spain at some point. A suggestion to the club, find the space to open a curry house within the stadium, it will take a fortune pre match and post match. .
And that's not a bad second post either! ;0) Doub there's room but an especially great call on the curry house idea!
So Captain H, this new striker you have been posting about, still coming?
I'm only guessing but I would of thought Captain Haddock was pointing towards Glenn Murray! IMO it would have to be no, would rather have a Beckford, Hesky or George Boyd(I know he's more a wide player but did well with CMS) to play alongside CMS OR DIGGER!
Who is DIGGER? The Glenn Murray rumour has been doing the rounds for a couple of weeks now - is Captain Haddock ITK or is he just reiterating what is already out there?

This opening match is going to give us a chance to see just how much depth we have in the squad, Injuries often open the door to young blood and at some point in the match I think we will see that young blood running. Vincente is going to be the key and I doubt that this is the last time I will write those words.
For me the good thing is that our defense has not been deminished to any great extent by the injuries and if we are solid at the back all will be well.
I expect a victory, maybe not a demo job but a victory none the less.

For those of you that don't have Sky Sports you should be able to watch the game on your pc. Firstrowsports.com have it listed, this is the site I used to watch the Chelsea match. I have checked and it is listed.

So Crofty's on duty for wales and not available, so whose gonna play in the hole behind Barnesy and AN Other? OK Noonesy is playing up one wing but what about the other one? Bridgey will have to do a lot of tracking back. Heard a rumour about the new striker but too early to say for sure. Anyone know anything about Smithy or Jonesy?
Hope it's Murrayey.

It's all gone quiet over there, as the song goes....seems they've hit a snag.

And I couldn't possibly comment on who he is though I left a hidden clue (spelt it out) a few threads back ;0)
