Double injury boost for Albion

Craig Mackail-Smith Craig Mackail-Smith

Albion have been boosted by the return to fitness of Craig Mackail-Smith and Kazenga LuaLua for Saturday's opening Championship fixture at Hull.

Mackail-Smith (lower back) and LuaLua (hamstring tightness) missed Tuesday's 3-0 exit from the Capital One Cup at Swindon.

Will Buckley is also on the verge of shaking off his hamstring injury but is unlikely to be risked.

Manager Gus Poyet said: "The only injury is Hoskins. Bucker is very close. Saying that, it's a difficult one. Kazenga and Macca are available, so we have got good options, especially up front, where we didn't have too many the other day."

Poyet has revealed Hull's new £2.5 million German striker Nick Proschwitz was on Albion's radar. He said: "We looked at the striker. Of course, it was quite expensive to get him in and it was difficult to get him."

Looking good for the start of the season. LuaLua and CMS back, Crofts in to add supply, 2 more quality defensive players, new top class Keeper, development squad players coming through. Brilliant.

Match sharpness could be a factor for this pair lets hope will have better luck with injuries than last year. I dont expect harley to field an albion shirt again good to have croft back like his never say die attitude. Good signings this summer just a few players short to be geniuine contenders. Up the albion

After reading the headline and after the performance the other night, not to mention the comments on their contribution on here and NSC; i thought Noone and Dicker were injured!
Seriously though, hope CMS is raring to go. Always thought Lua lua is more of an impact player than a starter but at least he can cut in and supply our advance guard...
I'm a bit confused with the mixed messages regarding intent (Promotion) versus squad. We have a better squad than last year but the areas that really needed improving are still not resolved. I agree with many that another midfielder is necessary but i am starting to suspecct that maybe Gus sees JFC (despite his loan) as cover for this area. If Bridcutt gets injured (or suspended), it leaves El Abd or Crofts to fill the role, when arguably better employed elsewhere, But if Crofts does have to cover, then could JFC be recalled?
I am surprised that Harley and Dicker are still apparently valued as being able to (meaningfully) contribute to any promotion push (esp ahead of Sparrow) but maybe there are other factors?
Questions, questions. Answers on a postcard...

Wouldnt worry about the last match. Saw the highlights last night and don't think they bothered to get out of 3rd gear. Think they deliberately chucked it like a lot of the other Championship sides that went out. Showed some promising training ground routines. Think Bridge will be very important

I agree on pte, on reflection of the highlights it wasn't all bad, first half was ok. I don't think we chucked the game though, more like getting caught out and letting it slip away.

, with JFC, yep we can always get him back at a minutes notice.

I asked this question in a longer comment on the Bridcutt heading but I would like to ask it here too.

The stadium capacity is a tad south of 30,000, are we maxed out of can the stadium be be yet again worked on to increase than number?

You could drop the pitch and add another 2-3000 with 4 extra rows of seats added pitch side.

Or you could build the North or South stand up, or both. It would look a bit like the Australian Olympic Stadium

When the planned developments are completed, we will be at 30,750. To get us up to 40,000 would require a fairly major remodel, not impossible though.

You could easily fit another 20% in by making the seats 20% smaller.

Then you could charge double for the fat supporters (one seat for each cheek)

Anyone remember the old goldstone days when wardy was on fire and mullers took us from Div3 to Div1 with 30,000 crowds? Then it all went downhill, boring middle of table Div 1 stuff with crowds of 10,000 plus. Beware!

Boring middle of table Div 1 stuff.... interesting that the crowds were higher in the climb up to the highest position weve ever been in, and then dropped alarmingly when we reached our summit as it was "boring". Mike Bailey's dull style is still the highest finishing Albion team ever.
And yes, he was sacked cos fans thought it dull. We got relegated next season in an exciting Cup Final season, and have never been back.... until ?

Wasn't the next season, we went from ninth to needing to win the last 4 to stay up the next season, which we did, then went down in 82/83

Thanks for your replies re my question regarding the capacity of the ground. My reason for asking is that GP is telling us of the costs involved in bringing in good players, if, as I hope, we get promoted this season, we are going to need real money to compete.

I am pretty sure that we could survive on the income from 30,000 sell outs but could be compete.
VP is joing M. United on a reported 200,000 a week, can 30k sell outs cover that? You might say, well we wouldn't pay that but wouldn't we have to if we are to compete.
I guess I am hoping that we have this problem, what a nice problem to have but, surving can quickly turn to relegation, our neighbors SH spent years rumbling along the lower middle and lower bottom of the table and eventually went down.

The big money comes from TV and prize money from promotion. Then parachute payments if you yo yo

It would be possible to to put a upper seating area on the north stand to hold mybe 4,000.May have to move TV studio. Also upper East stand could be taken round to the north stand corner.Vamping up the corners could also be looked at.The amount of seats would then be about 37,000.I think that would be plenty.

Glad to see some of our walking wounded are returning to fitness but hope Poyet doesn't rush them back prematurely.
He may not have much choice with CMS but it might be prudent to start LuaLua on the bench.
Of course if we were to sign a new striker tomorrow then CMS could be on the bench as well.
I notice on the club's website that Poyet is calling for more consistency from the players.
In the context of the Hull game he says 'The first goal is very important because it opens up the game, so we need to score first'
Unfortunately that is where our problems lie, scoring goals.
It is for this reason that the signing at least one more striker and strengthening the midfield further, ideally with a midfield 'powerhouse' type that Poyet has mentioned in the past, are so important this season.
It will be interesting to see (a) how well the Seagulls perform on Saturday and (b) whether Burke and Poyet can secure the new players they want in the next 14 days.

Lots of players are going to be more willing to move clubs over the next couple of weeks of the transfer window. With the premier league starting Saturday as well, when players realize they are not in their starting eleven, then they could come on our radar.

Yep, wasted the time posting.
If Nick Proschwitz is the second of the two strikers that Gus was looking at then we could find ourselves left out in the cold or sign an also ran I hope none of those options arise.
I still got a feeling that Gus is going to pull a rabbit out the hat, someone that has not even been mentioned here in these hallowed comments of B and H A wanna be managers.

They get a disproportionately larger amount of money from hospitality boxes than rows of seats. So its not just about quantity of bums on seats but the quality of those bums on seats. Being a new stadium it can be custom made to have as many boxes as possible.

Let's just wait and see if CMS and Lua Lua actually play on Saturday: what Gus says is generally not to be taken too seriously. But do people realise that KLL only played all 90 minutes of 1 league match last season (at Middlesborough), he was substituted in all the other 10 matches he started. He's no sicknote but the fact is that he seems to have hamstring problems every time he steps on the pitch and I get the impression he is never going to be able to play regularly.

The Amex was custom made without all the boxes because 1901 style with Hospitality seats is regarded as bringing and retaining more income with more ability to be flexible these days.
