Defeat is cruel but Poyet pleased with performance

Gary Dicker gets in a block Gary Dicker gets in a block

Gus Poyet is convinced Albion will pick up wins on the road if they play as they did at Hull today.

But he admits his team were “really down” after an unfortunate 1-0 reverse.

The Seagulls boss was pleased with his side, particularly in the second half.

Now he wants them to repeat that display when Cardiff visit The Amex on Tuesday.

Poyet said: “When we had to pass it, we passed it.

“When we had to play one-touch football, we did it.

“When we had to play in behind, we did it.

“We had plenty of shots.

“Normally, in a game like this away from home you are going to win.

“It can’t happen again.

“Can we repeat it on Tuesday? Can we repeat it next Saturday?

“That’s the key now.

“It was difficult to take. The boys are really down.”

He added: “After 75 or 80 minutes I was thinking ‘We’ve done everything. Let’s hope this game is not that cruel’.”

Poyet revealed Vicente had not trained since before the defeat at Swindon on Tuesday due to a minor niggle.

He added: “I suppose every single supporter will go home today a little bit sad.

“It’s a long way to go back home.

“But at the end they have to think if we play like this we will many games away from home.”

The Yorkshire Post (in their report) didn't think we deserverd to lose - yes we seemed to play quite well..
Worrying habit not scoring away from Home - last away goal 24 March.
Vicente injured - I hope not for long.
Really need that goalscoring forward and another midfielder - both with some physical presence.

Funny old game, last year we were fortunate to win the first game, this time unlucky to lose". Time to remember just how far this club have come.. The days of awful coaching staff, rubbish players, and sitting in the with dean is only two years ago, Gus has it right, our weakness last year was in defence, This time next week we could have Bz in the club, subject to Berbatov signing for Qpr.

Off target,no marksman ,no points. Its a simple game ,get the ball in the net as fast and as many times as you can and make sure its one more than the other team. All these patterns and formations just clouds what the main objective is.

Has Gus ever said that He would like to sign Him?Next week things should really start hotting up in the Transfer Market.I am sure Agents will soon realise that a Percentage of something is better than a Percentage of nothing. For all of the endeavour today we didn't have an end product to get the all important first goal.

You seem to miss the whole point in development... If NFC was so good, surely another club other than Oxford would want him? Give the lad a break, he has ability, but needs to learn the game away from the pressure of the championship, yes he has. Performed well on one or two moments, but he needs to learn the game.

Good game and a very decent performance from the lads.

We were very unlucky to come away pointless and really should have won it...we were in the ascendancy more and more as the game wore on.

Had a good day out in good company and contrary to the suggestion of the last paragraph or two of the above article, we were in very high spirits on the journey home.

Plenty of very loud singing with an extensive repertoire and a certain Mr Bloom was aboard the fun bus (albeit in a different carriage).

No problem at all about today. We played well, moved the ball a lot better and quicker and looked lively. Nooney had a much better game, CMS did very well and was a constant pest and there looked a good balance to the team.

Can't wait for Tuesday.

Quite a few positives to take from yesterday, as sounded like a cut above our away performances from last term. This is a division where everyone beats everyone, and losing away at Hull is no disaster. Just watched the BBC 'highlights'. Anyone know why Barnes was in right back position when they scored? I suppose you can't blame him for not knowing what to do, but he just seemed to be asleep. Keeper to blame as well, but I know he will be great.

AmexicanWave says...
9:14am Sun 19 Aug 12

I may not have had as far to travel as most Albion fans after the match, but I was still gutted as the final whistle blew, and I slowly made my way home.
We dominated large periods of the match, with Crofts and Bridge making outstanding contributions to the more attack minded play employed by GP. Forget the Swindon performance, this was Albion in a renewed competitive mode, with flowing football from the back, and less hesitancy in midfield.
To all you Dicker doubters, forget it, he linked the forward movement exceptionally well today, and allowed Crofty the freedom to switch play and create different options for CMS and Barnes.
The latter pairing often caused confusion in the Hull defence, with their quick counter play, and movement to open up the back four. This, and the overall Albion play, was in marked contrast to last season's away style of slow and rather cautious.
Bobby Zamora? Could be the icing on the cake!
Well played Albion, there is a very successful season ahead. See you at Burnley!

Gazza by the sea says...

Have to agree with Amexicanwave. Have always liked Dicker and he was outstanding yesterday. Comfortable on the ball, linked play intelligently and tackled back when he had to. Biggest worry yesterday?... the quality of the bench (and the frailty of Vicente of course). Our back-up options in midfield are bottom 6 rather than top 6 material. Assume Gus is on the case but early season injuries to any of the starting eleven and my optimism after yesterday's performance will soon fade.

Hope you are right about Dicker, Gus is a real fan, perhaps a good pre season is what he needed. Agree about the lightweight bench, bring back JFC, would love to see him involved if only on the bench. Vicente will be back soon along with Buckley, it's gonna be a great season people.

Seems to me that JFC is being groomed to replace Vicente - a real talent. Happy to suffer the short term pain of losing him to Oxford as he'll be available as a regular much quicker that way than warming our bench.

MikeTheMan says...
10:43am Sun 19 Aug 12

Yes, we played well, certainly a lot better than in most of the away matches I saw last season. And yes, we were unlucky. But, as last season, we couldn't score. We had 18 shots - excellent. But only 4 were on target and our attempts to score were, well, woeful, sadly mainly by the usual suspects. If you have 18 shots you should get a lot more than 4 on target and you should get some goals from 18 shots. And, I suppose predictably really, we eventually paid the price for our woeful shooting. It was a good performance in most respects but, to state the obvious and what we all know, we MUST get a proven Championship goalscorer - and SOON.

20 efforts on goal away from home is impressive, there will be plenty of teams that didnt get that many at home.20 efforts on goal and no goals though is cause for concern, but as well as our lads played today, and from all accounts that was a very good team performance,we still need those two extra players, agood striker to help CMS (the poor bloke cant be expected to do it all on his own) and another midfielder with the same quality as Crofts.I deffinately agree with all those who think JFC should be on our bench.Big crowd tuesday and 3 points please.UTA

Maybe 18 efforts on goal--I would rather see 4 efforts on goal and 3 scored!! Yes we do need a proven goal scorer that can link with CMS. As for Bobby Z coming back, I cannot see it. How are we going to be able to afford his wages?? only the first game and no need to worry but it would be good to get this 'other player or players' situation resolved. Scoring goals wins matches as Swansea and Fulham know only too well!! and we do need to start scoring GOALS!!!!

Look, this is my own view and I know others will think different. There were many games last year when we played awful but still managed to pinch a point or three. They were not good games of football to watch.

Primarily all I want this season are good direct team performances and that’s what we got yesterday. Team consistency is key to progress and the goals will come. I don’t want to see a bad game where we rob the opposition and end up being lucky. CMS had a great game yesterday and would have scored a couple had it not been for the crossbar and a good save. All the players had a good game yesterday and I hope we play like that for the rest of the season, win, lose or draw.

Too many people talking about 18 shots and linking CMS to them.Yes there were 18 shots but only 4 of them fell to CMS. Two of his attempts were off target, one hit the woodwork and one forced a good save, I can live with that. The better the service he gets the better the chances of him scoring.

Soccor is not a sport where, if you ALWAYS play well you will ALWAYS win, that attitude belongs to boxing where you can win on points or a knockout.

Who ever GP brings in as our new striker is going to face a lot of pressure from those who post on here, and probably a lot of those who don't. It seems that what people are saying is, sign a player and he will score because we expect him to, that's not how it works, Andy Carrol and his time at Liverpool tells us that and if you want more proof how about Torres at Chelsea.

When GP signs our new strike partner for CMS he will consider how that player fits into our line up and our way of playing, and he will do the same for any new midfield player or centerback. Individuals will not get us promoted but team performances will and by all accounts yesterday's match was a good team performance.

It has just cost Man U about £70m to sign a proven Goalscorer(majority last season)every team wants at least one Man U have 4.They are like the Proverbial Rocking Horse ****.People keep on about Bobby coming back and that He would score 20 or more.Well the Championship is a lot different to League 1 and 2 which are a lot better now and I am not convinced that Gus has even got Him under consideration.Gus is building His Squad of players and there are very few left from when He first arrived. He should be judged at the end of each Season on whether or not He has improved things not after a couple of games.

We completely changed our tactics 2nd half, we played more high balls than I have seen from this team for a long time, CMS had a stormer winning most in the air, his ball control, running and laying the ball off were superb, we had at least 5 good chances of scoring by different players, Hull fans walking back to the Station were all saying we were very unlucky to lose, doesn't help does it. If there are three players out there that would satisfy our needs up front, in midfield and at center back, how many other clubs do you think there are also interested in these three players.

In my humble opinion the best asset we have is Gus Poyet, he could be the deal maker. Players that might come to us on loan, and I do think that we are more likely to go that way two of the three we need, will choose us because of what Poyet can do for their progress.

If we offer a million for a player many other clubs could double that bid. If we can pay 20% of a loan player's wages, other clubs can off maybe 40%. We are the only club that has Gus Poyet and there are very few of his type around.

Every thing we have today, our stadium, backroom set up, ambition, our prospects and several of our players is do to the fact that we have Poyet. Tony Bloom knows the value of this man, he knows that we build our club on his back. This is not the time to be bemoaning the fact that players have not come, this is the time to demonstrate our faith in the best asset Brighton has. The players will come, not any players, but the right players.

The reason i mention the 18 efforts at goal is because there were games last season when we would have far less. The fact they were being created ,even if not converted surely has to be a positive. The 2-0 defeat away at Coventry at the end of last year saw us with a total of 7 shots at goal 5 on target in the whole 90 mins. And look at where they are now ,and we finished a very respectable 10th.My point being that 18 efforts away to a descent side on the opening day bodes well for the season.Next week it could be 18 shots 14 on target! Things will improve.UTA

Only if they practice shooting wide or over the top in training.
This should result in a reasonable percentage of the miss-hit chances going in.

Might work or you could give them square boots.

In all seriousness though we will be alright, I would be more worried if they were too scared to shoot.

I am so confident that Gus is going to get the additional players that he feels will complete the puzzle next week that I've just put a wager on us to finish in the top 2. I'm putting my money where my mouth is as I truly 100% believe that the addional 1 or 2 will make us the team that Gus wants to take us to the promised land.

We need to sign Kryten from 'Red Dwarf' to take advantage of any ball whipped in at head height.

For anyone not familiar with the character, the following google images page will illustrate the benefits he could bring to the side.

As reported by those who attended the match, an encouraging away performance against capable opposition.

Thanks for the summary Captain, good positive reactions are coming from what was always a tough start. Statistics are all well and good when looking back to our last away goal etc, but we should focus on the now, and on another day, with the touch of luck that every club needs from time to time, we would have waltzed away from the KC with all 3 points safe and sound. The thing that fills me with hope is that we can now mix it up with our play, something that we found in pre-season, and immediately it's produced many more chances than what we normally witness, especially away from the Amex.
After missing most of pre-season, CMS's performance was a massive positive, and typical of the man, the goals will come as his service and confidence grows. Not worried about Vicente, watched the Swindon game and he took a hefty challenge that left him floored for a bit, if there's any doubt over his fitness he won't be risked, too important a player, and could cause more damage long term, Gus will protect him as he tries to with KLL because of their style of play.
Roll on Tues, big game in prospect, big crowd and huge atmosphere.

If i were a professional player with several clubs to choose between,Gus with the respect both as a player and a man, could very well be the diference to who i`d sign for.I beleive he is the reason that the higher quality players we have and are looking for would give us a second look.UTA

No I don't think differently. I hunk you're spot on.

For me it's about good football. If we do that week in week out I'll be happy and the majority of fans will too.

With the right personnel which we largely have already (with the rest to follow) we'll be successful and progress playing that way anyway!

Great game Saturday. Can't wait for tmrw now.
