Poyet: Roar us to victory

Vicente returns for Albion tonight Vicente returns for Albion tonight

Gus Poyet has urged a record-breaking crowd to help Albion continue their impressive form at The Amex this season.

The Seagulls host Cardiff in their first home game of the campaign tonight, boosted by the return of Vicente and an expanded capacity.

The Welshmen only requested a five per cent allocation but the new upper tier in the east stand and extra seats in the south stand mean the attendance is likely to exceed The Amex high of 21,897 against Liverpool in the League Cup last season.

That was among only five defeats in 28 matches for the Seagulls on home turf, a formidable record Poyet is keen to maintain after Saturday’s unfortunate 1-0 defeat at Hull.

Poyet said: “It’s always key. For me on Saturday the best ten minutes for Hull was after Aluko hit the crossbar from nowhere. That created a bit of atmosphere and the people had a good feeling and they had a go at us for ten minutes, which means the crowd helped the players go to another level.

“If we play the same way we did on Saturday at The Amex it could be incredible. It could create an absolutely magnificent atmosphere.

“You need that sometimes, because we are human beings. The idea, without any doubt, is to be very strong at home and keep performing away, then we will get points sooner or later.”

Vicente is available after missing Hull with an inflamed thigh tendon but winger Will Buckley (hamstring) will be saved for Saturday’s visit by Barnsley, despite impressing in training yesterday.

We had regular 28,500's in the late '70's at the Goldstone. The only record tonight will be for the new stadium. Anyway, let's not get hung up on records, but just urge the Seagulls to victory.

When to Goldstone was near to capacity, I remember young fans being sat around the edge of the pitch in a single row. That was how I knew, too long ago, we had got around 30,000 in the ground.
I was normally down the front in the 'chicken run' East terrace.
Can you imagine health and safety allowing that these days?

Totally agree. I'd rather have Vokes, Wood or FFSM back than sign Piqionne. The Bothroyd rumour looks a false one, but am confident we'll see someone soon. Am beginning to think it may be a loan rather than a signing though. After the quality signings we've made in the other departments, this has been an unexpected frustration.

As I said on another thread Piquionne might be just about OK as either a loanee as short-term cover for Hoskins or as a second additional striker.
I think quite a number of fans are becoming 'restless' at the non signing of the much heralded new striker Poyet wants and has said he feels the squad needs for some considerable time now.
I think we need to remember that Poyet and his team identify the 2 or 3 potential striker targets and then it is down to Burke and others to do the initial work towards acquiring them.
I suspect that Poyet is as frustrated as all of us at the lack of 'visible ' progress although he will know how close we actually are to signing someone.
Of course it isn't only another striker we need but also a CB and a midfielder.
10 days left and counting until the transfer window closes...

I can't see us signing a striker, a loan deal has to be the answer just based on costs. Two or three weeks ago I read somewhere, I think Sky Sports, that Pongolle, the dude that once played for Liverpool, wants to get back playing in the UK, and nothing since.
At 27 and with his experience he would be good in the Championship and I think good for Bton.
The report said that several clubs were interested and that his agent is in the UK talking to various people about the options he has. Could we be one of his options?

Living where I do I get to see a lot of MLS games and the standard of play over the last ten years has skyrocketed, the answer to our search for a striker could be on this side of the pond. I would say that the best MLS players are now about on par with the UK championship level, and some are better.

A striker named, Chris Wondolowski, who plays for San Hose Earthquakes, just can't stop scoring goals. Over the last 23 games he has scored 18 and has 5 assists. He is aged 29 and is a USA international player. He is a player that has that natural ability of being in the right place at the right time.

If you have the time check out him out.

Good spot Vegas. However he is also one of the highest paid players in the MLS and I'm not sure the allure of Brighton to be sufficient to pry him away from his native California. You may - or may not- remember that I recently scoured the MLS for Uruguayan strikers that could be reunited with GP but with little or no success. One thing for certain is that anything is better than the rumoured Freddy Piquionne. As I have already said in an earlier thread he has an unenviable track record of disrupting dressing rooms going back several years - coinciding with his spiralling lack of form. Even on a freebie he is surely not worth it. Who would you justifiably leave out to accommodate him anyway? Oh well, I wait to be proved wrong - Nooney did it to me on Saturday when he managed two decent crosses, two more than I thought he could do. Fancy Crofts to hit the target tonight and CMS to do the business with a pair. Fingers crossed (which accounts for any typos...)!!!

I agree I just don't see Fred as an option.

Yep Wondo would come at a price but if you get a good return, and if we could cut our existing wage bill, the deal could end up as great value for money.

Tonight's game will be tough, or at least should be. It might turn out that the lads produce the quality that we know they have and we simply run the game from start to finish.
Croft, yep could well be on the score card maybe Vincente from a set piece. CMS will be ahandful tonight, of that I am sure, Cardiff might leave gaps just trying to control him, if they can keep up with him that is. ,

I have memories of a 30,000 plus crowd at home to Charlton on an Easter Monday in the late '70's no? Back then crowds of 26,000 plus were the norm but then again, we were on our way to the top tier of English football!

So, basically we want maximum attendances throughout the campaign so we can get back to that top tier, preferably without going through the play off's :)

By the way, does anyone remember PC Beard (my lord)?

Name: Eddie Johnson
Birth Place: USA
Age: 28
Club: Seattle Sounders
Height: 6 feet
Weight: 180lbs

Games started: 113
Goals: 52
Assists: 15
Shots 335
Shots on target: 147

Sounds good to me. A goal every other game, almost. Built for the job of holding the ball. Accurate in shooting. Wouldn't cost a fortune.
