Buckley boost for Albion but another setback for Vicente

Feeling bad: Vicente Feeling bad: Vicente

Albion have Will Buckley back for Saturday's home game against Barnsley.

But Vicente is unlikely to be in the squad, because of continuing fitness concerns.

Buckley sat out the first three matches of the campaign with hamstring trouble.

Boss Gus Poyet said today: "I think he is going to be available."

Vicente was brought off the bench in the closing stages of Tuesday's 0-0 home draw against Cardiff after missing last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Hull with an inflamed thigh tendon.

Poyet said: "We had Vicente on the bench the other day but he was feeling really, really bad. He couldn't even think about playing.

"We thought he would be better. We pushed him on the pitch for ten minutes but he is not going to be on the bench if he's not better. I've taken that risk once and that's it."

Meanwhile, Poyet has revealed there are no new developments in his striker search.

He said: "We had a very small chance of getting one or two but now they have gone, finished."

Oh dear--same old with Vicente--'he was very, very bad'--this does not sound good at all---one day things will click into place for The Albion---and still no sign of The Striker and now time IS running out. Lots of activity with clubs elsewhere, but I guess they either were too expensive--wages or/and fee, or they were not wanting to come to Brighton. I guess we will have to struggle on, very disappointing.

If we cannot add to the strikers perhaps we should change our style of play to maximise the potential of the squad? Blackpool seem to be doing ok playing good football with a similar budget squad. It is entertaining and so far successful. I still feel we are too negative at times.

Smoke and mirrors.

By the end of the the transfer window (probably at the last moment, when so many deals are done), I fully expect a top quality striker to be within the ranks.

I also believe that Vicente will be wowing us with his magic in the middle of the park, and not playing up front where he has no influence on the game.

Just try and calm down everyone, please.

Vicente obviously wasn't fit enough Tuesday night. If was he would have ben on earlier. Instead, he came on with just 10 min to go, played out of position, which in turn put CMS out of position. Surely, if we wanted to push for a goal, two strikers up front would have been better than one midfielder, however talented he is. We should not being trying to fit Vicente in to the team if he can't be relied on fitness wise imo. Perhaps we should think about changing the formation a bit, maybe 442. Might be considered old fashioned, but I think Bridcutt and Crofts centrally are strong enough. Will provide a bit more direct support for CMS and also catch the opposition out.

OK so it's down to CMS and WB and we'll run with that untill WH is back and then, along with TA, there will be good competition for the 2 places available - as long as there are actually 2 places available. The time has surely come for the formation to be revised to accommodate this. Hopefully the proof will be evident on Saturday. Fingers crossed...!

The shortlist for the targetman has to be:
Shola Ameobi, Kenwyne Jones, Jay Bothroyd, Bobby Zamora, Ishmael Miller, Marc Antoine Fortune, Marvin Emnes, Jordan Rhodes, Chris Wood, Harry Kane, Dj Campbell, Emile Heskey, Freddy Piquionne

Totally agree.
However, as I have said before, Gus is obsessed with 4-5-1 even though we are not Barcelona and will always push one striker out to the wing. With the classy, attacking full backs we have now, I don't feel that is necessary, do you?

Agreed. It is all about "playing a game", manage agents and players expectations about our financial ability and make everyone think (including us by default) that we are out of the running! There is no way, that Bloom will spoil what he has built so far with quality players and the expansion of the Amex by letting a quality forward slip the net. There is too much at stake and a top 6 finish is a minimum requirement in this boards expectation!

- Well you're living up to your name. We need a strongly built man with height at the front who can win balls in the air, unsettle defences and create chances for CMS and score a few himself. Buckley is a fine player , but he is certainly not a bustling centre forward.

The board know that there are bigger and richer clubs in this division who are much more promotion material than the albion. In this sense they are much more in tune with reality than many supporters. Yes - albion will make the premier league eventually, but I'm certain it won't be this season. I reckon 3-4 seasons is a more realistic target.

I believe and trust that you (and Cabin F
Fever earlier) are right. However it wasn't that long ago that Poyet was saying that 2 out his top 3 targets for a striker were still available and now this report indicates none are.
Given that we are looking pan Europe and not just UK we should be able to secure at least one striker in the next 8 days.
I would be disappointed if we didn't given (a) the length of time we have been looking, (b) the human resources working on it ie Poyet, Burke etc and (c) the Budget we must have left - outlay for Crofts, Bridge's wages and agents fees etc for Bruno and Kuszczak out but Elphick's £200,000 and Hall compensation in and that doesn't take into account the extra revenue generated by 5,000 more season ticket sales.
Not having a striker lined up currently doesn't mean Poyet and Burke can't sign a CB or another midfielder sooner rather than later.
Personally I would like to see the Albion also acquire an attacking midfield player as cover for Vicente and Buckley. Echoes of last season as other posters have pointed out re Vicente and his injury and having someone who can take Vicente's place when he is not fit would seem logical.

I read Vicente was quoted as saying he was fitter than ever pre-season (and played most the games too I recall). Even so Vicente on one leg is still worth getting on the pitch as the midfield (or the attack where he has been playing recently) do need some guile. In his brief cameo on Tuesday there was a mazey run leading to a free kick similar to the one against Portsmouth last season.

Conelli98 says...

Eddy B says...

Thought both Bridge and Bruno were excellent against Cardiff. Not really sure yet what Croft adds, nor Dicker. The much maligned CMS does create alot of pressure on opposition defences and goalkeepers with his non stop running but probably needs more direct support up front, whether from Buckley, Vicente, Barnes, Lua Lua. Think the goals will come for CMS eventually and the team did manage a higher shot count than usual (worryingly Cardiff had just as many too though and it could have easily have been a defeat).

I dont think I said that Gus would get the bullet if we did not reach top 6 in my post?! However top 6 is the expectation with the investment in all areas that have been made last season and this. My post was made to confirm my belief that with this expectation it is highly unlikely that this team is the finished product for this season and that the striker and or midfielder we all believe is key will be coming, regardless of Poyet's media posturing!

It looks like I am going to be the lone voice here when I say, I think we are done in the transfer market. I think Gus is giving it to us straight, his final two options have fallen through and there arn't any more on his radar.

I think the only way we get what Gus is looking for before the window closes is if he gets an unexpected call from a team looking to loan out a player or two.

With regards to how much money we may have spent and those players that came to us on a, 'free,' it would be my guess that they negotiated their own up front signing on fee and then wages on top. The fee might have lower than buying from a club but I doubt that they came for 'free.'

Vicente is a prime example of what it means to sign a player nearing the end of his career, injuries come quicker and take longer to heal. I would guess that any striker that we have looked at and bid for would have been one with enough left in his body to play a full season without fitness issues, other than the unexpected ones. Youth is a good thing but with youth you rarely get a proven goal scoring track record and we all know we need a proven goal scorer.

The right player for us would be aged between 24 and 29, he would have played a lot of games and have a scoring ratio of at least of 1 in three matches. Any player that fits these stats would come at a price and we would certainly have to fight off bids from other clubs.

I could be wrong with my idea of what Gus is looking for but I bet I am not far out.

Which only calls in to question some of GP's man-management skills... Sounds as if he might be the type who would suit us. I think getting in a young Premiership striker on loan is worth trying.

I am not sure if some of those posting on here have a clue as to what they are talking about.

There are a few on here that seem to be pointing the finger at Poyet, complaining that other teams have signed new players but Poyet has not.
Belamy went to Cardiff, ok, if Cardiff get promoted, and they might well, Belamy will be gone as his prmeirship days are done.
There have been many other signings by a few other promotion candidates that will also say goodbye to those bought in should promotion come.
I can only see maybe 5 players at our club that would remain if we get promoted. It is one thing to want to bring a player in but it is something quite different to find a player that will accept just one year with the club knowing that if we go up then he goes out.

A one year contract will not suit many players, unless they are real young or accept that the number of their playing days left are very few.

There are so many factors to be over come to get a player in. Everything could be perfect between a player and the club but they guy's wife doesn't want to move down south.

Should Poyet be looking for a one year prospect or someone with experience that might well serve us at a higher level should we get there. I suppose the simple answer is a one year wonder will do if he gets us promoted. The more difficult part of getting the one year wonder could be dealing with the fact that he comes from the north. He has a wife, children in school, a house and has been there for many years, does he want to uproot for a one year deal?

The few that want to point the finger at Poyet should really think about it first. They should consider all the aspects and hurdles that go into signing new players
.

For the life of me..............give
n the self professed "we need a striker" comments being blasted out out loud and clear from Gus and fans alike, why in world if we are that desperate would we at least not try the strikers we already have at the club in the game against Cardiff.
Adgestein sat on the bench throughout that game, good enough as a striker to be named in the line up, good enough to have bagged a few goals in the pre-season friendly's, yet seemingly not good enough as a striker to be given the chance for 15 mins to come on and bag that late winner for a team that desperately wants a striker ????
Still cant see the logic in throwing Harley on at the death or even Vicente given the known injury concerns, when a "striker" is sitting there dreaming of a chance..
I can't help thinking that sometimes the obvious answer is staring you staright in the face and we can't see the Adgestein for the trees !
Either play Barnes and CMS side by side up front instead of one always playing deep as a make shift midfielder, or give your bench strikers a shot at showing what they can do (or not). Then we'll know how badly we need a striker.

Once he is fully fit I think the thought a number of posters have expressed of trying Buckley up front might be worth a shout. Perhaps he could play just behind CMS and run at defences.
I know he is not a target man but that might be a solution given our lack of goals so far this season.

Annoying Vicente injured again but good about Buckley will be back. Simple to solve get JFC back to replace Vicente why not play Toby alongside CMS .
Suggest Rhodes Trotter get these 2 missing links of the puzzle and promotion will happen. Let's go for it. Keep the faith. Seagulls !!!!

Agree with Paul ,Rhodes and Trotter would fit the requirement very nicely.

I know we have a budget to spend on players and wages but surely GP knew from the end of last season our weak link is up front.

I know l will be shot down here but Bury just signed David Healy, yes ok he's 33 but might of been worth a punt for the season.

Apart from American Express do we have any Major Sponsorship deals because that is where the money comes from.I am sure the people like Barber that were brought in will be working to increase our revenue Streams.I am sure it is no coincidence that Chevrolet and Van Persie arrived at Old Trafford at the same time.Income from Bums on seats will not be enough to bring in the players that Gus is chasing. As I said on a previous post as the club progresses so will everything around it.Sponsors like Skint and Donatellos have been great for the club but we need some real big Sponsors to increase the income.
I think the RVP deal was more to do with the money freed up by the floatation on the US stock markets. However, the value of the shares plummeted shortly afterwards, so I'm not sure this is the best way to go long-term.

But I agree, sponsorship and high-profile commercial partnerships are the way forward, hence the appointment of Mr Barber.

Agree Mickey. I'm just about up to my back teeth with Vicente with his niggles. Why Gus got him back I don't know? He's more trouble than he's worth.

According to todays Telegraph M Owen can't get a club as he is considered to be over the hill for the PL. He will be going for free when the window closes. Could do a job for a year.

can anyone tell me why will hoskins name is not on the 1st team players list. It seems to have been omitted from seagulls website.

- 'Cos Gus has made it plain he doesn't rate him and he'll be off on loan again as soon as he is fit.
so why did he waste £500,000 of Tony Bloom's money? I am wondering if Gus ever travels miles to watch players live.

He talks a lot about watching DVD's of players and they usually come from agents. He needs to clock up miles and watch players himself if he is to make a sound judgement.

Back to basics Gus and please no more excuses otherwise you may find that letter you spoke about coming from TB and not the FA!
