El-Abd gets international call

Adam El-Abd is back in contention for Egypt and a place in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Albion defender has been called up by Egypt’s American coach Bob Bradley for friendlies against Benin on September 7 and Nigeria four days later.

El-Abd, whose father is Egyptian, missed out on his competitive debut for the African nation earlier this summer after playing a half in a friendly against Cameroon.

Passport delays prevented him from featuring in World Cup qualifying wins against Mozambique and Guinea.

El-Abd, 28 next month, now has his passport and Bradley has turned to the dependable centre half, who made his 300th appearance for Albion against Barnsley on Saturday.

The Seagulls could have three players away on international duty during the early September domestic fixture break, El-Abd joining Andrew Crofts (Wales) and Craig Mackail-Smith (Scotland).

Egypt resume their qualifying campaign on the road to Rio against Zimbabwe in March.

So richly deserved - a great club man and the player at the club who has benefited most from the vastly improved level of coaching which Poyet has brought to the club.

This is great news for a local lad - that is fully committed to his home town club. I would love to look at the archives and see the names of those knocking Adam several years back! He will grab this with both hands (who would have thought that Brighton would have a team mostly made up of current or ex-internationals!)

Also Bridcutt and Greer are in line for a Scotland call up.

He's started the season brilliantly and well deserved call up. Agree Bridcutt and Greer must have an excellent chance along with CMS for Scotland.Just hope it doesn't interfere with league form, injuries etc.Not to forget Crofty and Wales.

Raise my hand DC, I did once write (only once though) that AEA was a red card waiting to happen and as such was a bit of a liability. In recent times he has proved me wrong and all credit to him - at the time of writing I still believe I wasn't too far from the truth but that was then and now is now. Well done AEA and good luck...!

AEA will be Egypts best defender by far. Good luck to the boy.

Yes, I freely admit that I was another one (different ID at that time). I was really surprised at first with the faith Gus placed in him, but his improvement has been immense.

I was wrong, Gus was right. I expect that to happen again. (Maybe with Harley?)

I have a feeling you're going to be right about Harley. I've seen him twice this season and he seems to be a player in transition. If he can increase his physical presence and energy levels, that allied to his undoubted skills will make him an excellent midfield player for us. I'm looking for him to continue his improvement throughout this season. If he does so in future I can see him becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Strikes me as one of those players who will not take his place for granted. Clearly a committed professional who gives his all every match.

Fair play to those above for admitting their earlier scepticism / criticism of Adam. True gents!

Let's not get carried away with all the bonhommie. I don't yet share the enthusiasm shown by others on the subject of Ryan Harley. Of course, having been proved wrong once I shall be pleased to raise my hand again. He's got to have a good game at some time or other - if he still makes the bench...However isn't there a saying about lightning never striking twice... We'll see.
