Cardiff closing on Noone

Final fling: Craig Noone dazzles against Barnsley on Saturday Final fling: Craig Noone dazzles against Barnsley on Saturday

Cardiff are confident of signing Albion winger Craig Noone – at the second time of asking.

Sources in South Wales expect a seven-figure deal to be tied up tomorrow after a medical was completed this afternoon.

As per club policy, Albion boss Gus Poyet declined to comment on the reports.

However The Argus understands Cardiff boss Malky Mackay has got his man - after upping his winter offer.

The Seagulls turned down a bid for Noone in January and agreed a new contract, taking the winger through until 2015.

Ironically Noone posed alongside his Seagulls club mates this morning for the traditional start-of-season squad photo.

Not surprising, given Mackay's resolve to sign the player.
I think this might just tip the scales for our own signings before the Friday deadline, with a quality signing looking more likely now.
Rumours are flying around as to who might be coming in. We will all know very soon.
Good luck to Craig.

I think the funds are being put together for a Top Class Striker.I don't think there is much difference in ability between Noone and Walcott and look how much He is going to cost someone.Good luck Noonie.

He has been a good player and ambassor for the club but if we get above 1m for him then that is great business, I don't think he will be greatly missed as we have plenty of wingers and 2 amazing full backs who know how to attack...be interesting to see how the money is spent.

One of our better players being sold to a rival club, I just hope that if the money we get from the sale is not squandered on a used to be like Owen or Heskey. I no some think Heskey can do a job for us but I never thought he did much of a job even in his younger days. JMO. and sure others may disagree.

Take the money. He is tricky but too often gets knocked off the ball. Too, his final ball is often pretty dreadful. Comment above about our full backs is a valid one.

Anyone with legs like mine, which he has, is at a natural disadvantage!!

be a real shame is this goes through as so far this season he's looked the best he's ever looked since signing for us. Also having 3 very different but game changing wingers along with Buckley and LuaLua is a real strength to the side. If no one brought in to replace him, think this could prove to be a bad bit of business, especially with injury worries that go with the other two and Vicente.

Albion In Staffs says...

A real shame but if its one step back and two forwards as a consequence then so be it.
If you look at it positively, it could be a sign that Gus is sticking to his principles of only bringing in high quality. He's held out for as long as he can but perhaps the only way he can get the player (players?) he really wants is to compromise elsewhere? So if the overall result by Friday is positive, then job done..

I'm surprised Brighton are letting him go if you are keen on promotion.

Is Poyet hoping to use the money to buy another player or two, or even do a part ex?

It looks a good signing for Cardiff City!

I hope you do well........as long as you finish below us!

we turned down something in excess of £1.5m in January so the fee will presumably start there - hopefully with add-ons. I would guess we may have something to pay Plymouth from that - not sure though as we bought him for cash in a fire sale. Nota bad deal when w need the money for a striker but he was in the best form since this time last year so he will be missed. We are about to sign Orlandi from Swansea as his replacement apparently but the money will go for a striker and hopefully the quality will excite

Good point about the full backs. We have good options in wide areas but not in others.
Let's look at it as a re-distribution of talent although, while sad to see him go, I've never been overly convinced he's a Championship promotion winner….

Hrrrmph. Saw Nooney filling up at the petrol station at about 10.45am. this morning and said keep it up this season. He smiled, but looked a bit sheepish. Now I know why! Unfortunately he's the most consistently fit of the three wingers. Buckers and LuaLua seem vulnerable to hammie problems, so whilst £1m+ is great, let's hope we still have enough available wing power for our new centre forward, whoever that may be.

A million plus, yep a decent deal and we do have good options to cover his loss but, I hope that we have a slice of any potential future sale by Cardiff as I think he might develop into a very good player.

So money coming in, our wage bill cut, what's the next headline story. If nothing else this sale does suggest that we needed to top up our spending budget.
I remain a tad miffed that the players Gus has made clear do not have a future witht he club are still on the books.

I think it fair to say that none of us saw this coming, now we know it is easy to see the sense of it but this was never on my radar.

If the club were able to keep this deal as quiet as they did it begs the question, what else are they up to. I feel pretty sure that Vincelot will go, he is too good to just sit on his butt untill his contract runs out.

If we turned down a reported 1.5 million from Cardiff last year and that was before he signed a new contract, I think,I would have to figure that the new offer was no less than 2 million, if the 1.5 million was reported correctly.

Would much rather have seen Harley, Vincelot or Sparrow go - they are more squad plays and Nooney would play ahead of them any day. We needed a striker before this news! Surely we could have secured a striker without having to let Nooney go? I know Gus has always said everyone has their price, and this is fair enough but hope it doesnt come back and to haunt him - especially if Cardiff are up there agaisnt us and espeially if Gus doesnt add to the squad, through signings or loans...Grrr

You can only "get rid" if others want them and they want to go. Those Gus has identified are probably on decent wages which are too much for the type of clubs who'd take them.
They're perfectly entitled to stick around, so don't blame the club. It happens all the time.

Bottom line is you only get bids for players that other teams want. Not Not going to get this sort of money for Sparrow, Vincelot and Harley even if we sold all three. If it helps bring in the striker we want and we still have considerable strength out wide it could work out for the better. All the best Nooney, have enjoyed watching you.

I wonder how long we will have to wait untill the club confirms this sale.
I guess they might rather link Noony story leaving to a new player arriving story.

How sure are we thta the figure offered the first time around by Cardiff was 1.5 million? My reason for asking is that I would expect Gus and the board to be looking for more this time. If you consider the role that Noony plays for us it's not as if we have bought a new player to replace him so now he can go. If 1.5mill wasn't enough back then why would it be today.

Dr Baldhead says...
8:31pm Wed 29 Aug 12

I tend to agree with those who felt we missed a trick by rejecting a decent offer in the last transfer only to have Nooney start 4 more games thereafter. If we have received an improved offer then that is good business.

Nooney is a decent player but is behind LL and Bucks in terms of pace and finishing ability. He is perhaps ahead of Kaz in terms of trickery but what Kaz does have is the strength not to get pushed off the ball. Bucks is the best of the three and if he gets a run when he is free from injury, he'll be one of the best players in the division. All in all this isn't bad business AS LONG as the funds help us get in a quality striker AND we perhaps add another central midfielder.

It was interesting to see Malky congratulate CN as the players walked off the pitch last week. I wondered then if he might yet end up at Cardiff but I have to admit I didn't see this coming - I was more worried about bids coming in for Bridcutt or Dunk.

Bucket feet Duffy says...

No one was a good player granted, but only when his head was down, was unable to cross the ball consistently or look up and make that telling pass, would beat a player weave about only to find the same player had faced up to him again lacked the pace and directness of Buckley or Lua Lua but did keep fit and cannot call his work rate into question Gus would not let him go unless he had better options, let's wait and see!!

1.5 million x 2 for Noone and Hall. 200k for Tommy. Navs, Noone, Tommy, Jfc and 5 loanees off the wage bill from the end of last season and only 500k spent on Crofts must mean we have one hell of a budget left given Tb stated only a few weeks ago that this seasons budget is as good as last years. In my mind that must mean we have about 7.5 million. While I appreciate that the new signings Kuz, bridge, Bruno and Bridge will all command a good wage and rightly so as they are top quality, I'm guessing that the wage bill is still lower than last year given all those listed above that are no longer being paid by us. I 100% believe that we have a very exciting 48 hours ahead of us. I'm watching this space with great hope. UTA

UTA
you are forgetting significant signing-on fees even for "free" transfers plus higher wages. We have nothing like that sort of money avalable

This looks like good business to me. Although he has looked better this year so far (Swindon aside!) he is not strong enough for Championship full backs and his final ball is often poor. Thanks for the memories Craig though and you have been a great servant to the club and fun to watch!
I now look forward to some "Breaking News" about players coming in by the deadline and hopefully some quality ones to move us forward this year. I still believe that a great striker is about to be un-veiled!!

Well about this time yesterday, well maybe a little later, I predicted that we would get new today, and we did.Not what I expected but none the less news.

I predict that tomorrow we will get more news and even more on friday.
I think some of the news will be yet more players leaving and some will be about the three new players that are coming in, yep I do think that three are on their way to us.

My prediction is that we will buy two and do a loan deal for a third. I iwll also predict that at least one of them will be foreign and comes to us due to some sort of connection either with Gus or through a connection with someone in our squad.

Sleep well UK, 4am for me is 12 noon for you so if there is any morning news you guys will get it before me but I will be up early.

Rumours afoot that Nicky Maynard is joining us tomorrow on a season long loan from WHU. Something to sleep on. Would be pleased with that, although he's not the target man I thought we were seeking. Night All!

Glenn Murray-have we really mised him?I don't think so!!! Lets be honest he didnt pull up many trees for Palarse!!

Boyd and Taylor signed for Ipswich for 1.75 milion? I'm sorry but that is mad and not a market we want to get involved in!!

Good business for Noone considering the price we got him for.

Want a long shot? Emile Sinclair from Peterborough. Power, pace and to me fits the player profile we're looking for.

To all Brighton Fans- "Keep calm and carry on" !!!

No worries - Berbatov signs for QPR tomorrow (Thurs) and Zamora to Brighton by Friday.
We will only ever play with one winger on the pitch at any given time, so Buckley, or LuaLua always to start, and this is Gus's new master plan of two up front, (Zamora and CMS), looks like 4-4-2 on paper but is really a 4-3-3. Much better.
Sadly it means that Barnes and CMS will find that only one them starts and one is benched.
It's all good though. Well done Craig, and thanks for the memories.

I do hope not. Maynard is not half the player Cms is and as you say is no target man. I'm hoping for better.

Against Barnsley which winger had the assist, read the report say know more!!!
Whoever we get you can be sure it will more than make up for losing , as we will as someone posted before start with one winger and two wing backs the choice being dictated by who's fit and available and the opposition, I await with baited breath for the final hours of the window to close!

Just to add I believe the next signing will be from the lower leagues or an unproven foreign player or a prem season loan the latter being the more likely IMO

Will be gutted to see Craig go, ok he has flaws to his game, but how far has he come since being at Albion, and on his day there are few better in the Championship, cracking talent and a wonderful player to watch.
I truly hope we will get the quality in, or I fear we will be caught short. This is not a negative, just looking at the whole picture, Buckers and KLL are considerable players and I'm a huge fan of both, but both are prone to regular spells on the sidelines, and width is what we need.
Agreed it would be good business, but we have to improve to move forward, and Gus has struggled to find the right players on the right terms for the past two summers.
Here's hoping that we can pull something off before Saturday comes around. UTA

Yep, I agree with you, mate. I think this is a very shrewd bit of business by Gus and Tony Bloom. He was shocking at SN1 but great last Saturday apart from the final ball. Too small but a great little footballer, let's hope he doesn't come back to bite us in the proverbial (that one ok for you, Sarah), lol. Good luck Craig, enjoyed your skills and SOH....UTA........

If a troll is somebody who doesn't rate our manager, then I am a troll. He is treated like a god by so many fans when he is really a useless mortal.

Look just along the coast for a good manager. Saints were in the same leagues as us, and look where they are now.

Get shot of the manager, not good players. Until we do, we are going nowhere. .
