Hammond back at Albion
10:49pm Friday 31st August 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
He's back: Dean Hammond has signed for Albion (picture by Paul Hazlewood)
Albion have completed a hat-trick of late transfer deals by bringing former captain Dean Hammond back to the club.
The midfielder has rejoined the Seagulls on a one-year loan from Southampton.
Hammond's arrival completes a hectic close to the transfer window for the Seagulls.
Boss Gus Poyet had already landed striker Stephen Dobbie from Swansea, midfielder David Lopez from Athletic Bilbao and, earlier in the day, Andrea Orlandi, another Spanish midfielder also from Swansea.
The deals were confirmed in quick succession by the club in the run-up to the 11pm transfer deadline.

I know you want an update so I best do it now.
New fridge freezer arrives tomorrow and the air conditioning has had a temp repair with the full repair happening monday. Any further developments regarding these items will follow if deemed of worth to the general public.

Midfield sorted. Enough said about Hammond. He was club captain and gave his all when he was here last...
Attack: Not quite what we thought but with attacking options from the middle and two workaholics and the enigma that is Barnes, good enough.
Top six. On paper yes. Strong league but stronger than last year; possibly.
Team stronger than last year; definitely...
Best bit of business? Bridcutt still here and CMS given the opportunity to go beyond his top bloke status.
I presume that the 'deadwood' will now be loaned.

We have to be ahead in the money stakes as far as spending goes, but we might be paying out extra in wages.
The players coming to us are quality but possibly more importantly they will very quickly become used to our style of play.
Good players are already thinking the way Poyet does, they are used to it, and they have experience of actually doing it at higher levels.
Are we now better equiped to to convert the chances we create indeed will the chances created be easier to convert, I think a resounding yes is the only answer.
Four new names to the team sheet, four players that will slip in so easily, Some of the other clubs will wrestle with how to fit six, seven and more into their squads. Ours will be a seamless blend, I don't think the same can be said for all the others.
I think Gus has finally got what he wants, a team that can take us all the way to the premiership.

Ok, well my first thought was surprise. Surprise as I didn't really think of him when I thought of the type(s) of player(s) we needed but after more consideration he might fill some holes in our armoury.
I was also surprised as he seriously pished off a sizeable number of our fans that night three years or so ago.
Offensive gesturing to a packed main stand full of plenty of kids and pensioners amongst others is not on, especially given he's both an ex-player who graduated through the youth ranks and a Brighton lad AND also a player with whom we had no previous gripe in the intervening years. As a side point I might add he was also semi-claiming a decisive touch (wrongly) in the goal in question.
Can I forgive him? Yes. Forget? No...though that's for possible later reference!
Is an apology (perhaps in the Sheff Weds match programme as suggested above?) in order? Absolutely!
Is it essential? As good as. Deano will have to win many supporters round the hard way and he's due to stay for a whole year. If he doesn't he runs the risk of the resident whingers, moaners and boo-boys...they won't be able to pick on Barnes because he'll be bagging 20+ this campaign and Dicker will be uninvolved - as a result of Hammond's arrival, in fact.
So while it's a head-turner and eyebrow-wrinkler of a signing, I'd back him IF he apologises. Doesn't have to be a big deal, just a brief nod to his misjudgment.

Joe, this infers that the game may be won by the odd goal. If, after all this, we can only beat Christelle Alice by the odd goal it will have all been in vain. I expect - nay, demand - a clear 5 goal margin. And if Deano scores a hatrick so much the better. Fingers crossed...!!!

To those who say forgive and forget - I say fools do that. Maybe, if there were to be an apology, we might forgive but we would be wise not to forget.

We gave Harding loads of stick at Withdean that night, rightly or wrongly, but to my knowledge he didn't react once. No Hammnd shouldn't have reacted the way he did or have used offensive language, but we supporters seem happy to dish out abuse to players but the get all indignant whe they occsionally give some back. Time to get over it and move on. Welcome all the new boys and welcome back Dean.

To Oldwalburtonian: The abuse Albion players suffer from sections of the home crowd, which normally involves the use of the C - F and B words and is usually prefaced by the word 'useless' is not something I would like, nor, if I were an emotional, heart on sleeve player would I be able to resist the urge to respond. As for kids I've stood next or near to parents with kids at games, and from both kids and parents I've heard foul mouthed abuse hurled at players for missing tackles/passes etc, it's remarkable really to see a twenty stone adult in a B&H shirt, red faced and wild eyed from screaming abuse, as with spit an pie crusting around his face, he turns to the ten stone miniature version next to him that's parroted everything that daddies said, and says " they all useless overpaid Cs ain't they son".
I agree DH should acknowledge that his response was out of order, but i think it's hypocritical to neglect the abuse and vilification that's hurled at players every week yet turn on players that respond - - Double standards.
IDEA: Perhaps every supporter who's ever screamed abuse at a player from the stands could write an acknowledgement and apologize, then we could ask to have a special edition printed Program with the complete collection - then we would hold two titles (1) best new stadium (2) biggest book ever printed.

Dean Hammond has always given 100% to the cause, wherever he has played, both during and after his Albion days, that is without question.
To be pumped up to play against your former club is nothing new, and to many it is an opportunity to "put one over" former employers, just to show what has been lost to them. Alan Navarro's obvious delight with his brace against us is a clear example of this, and witnessing him playing as he did that night was a body blow to the travelling Albion faithful.
Hammond had moved on at the Withdean, and he was out to show his former club that he had made progress in the interim; a natural reaction from an ex-player, especially one who had been developed through their ranks.
Heat of the moment? Most definitely! Was I upset at the time? No, but I remember so many others being so wound up about it.
A passionate and committed player will give a team so much more than one who might feel a little squeamish while playing against his old club. Hammond was passionate and committed to Saints at that time, he will now be passionate and committed to the club that made him. Let's welcome him back and move on for heaven's sake.

And we're not talking down on his knees crying and begging pre-match here. Just a few words to the press and in the programme.

In the early hours of this morning I wrote on a separate thread referring to Lopez that I may need a bed in A&E to cope with a dodgy ticker failing to cope with the racing pulse after all this activity. Then I read some of the drivel on here. I shall happily give up my bed because some of you lot are in urgent need of medical attention. Whatever Hammond did, whenever he did it, it's over. Surely we all know that pro footballers are not always the sharpest knives in the box and more than capable of making the occasional error of judgement. By now the proverbial water has flown and time should have been the healer unless you really do need help. There have been other examples of excessive behaviour in football (as there are in every walk of life) but people - ordinary people in the real world - get over it. Fingers crossed you will also do the same.
I don't know how he'll be received but surely you can see its in everyone's interests to make that move.
Anyone who then abuses him will be ostracised. If he doesn't apologise he leaves the door open.

So all you Hammond haters the next match you go to are you going to turn to fellow fans and tell them to mind their language when you hear a volley of profanities hurled at our own players.I think Hammond has really broad shoulders and will be well aware of the upset he caused.Let us wait and see what he has to say or do and then take it from there I think maybe the Managagement will have had something to say to Him on the P.R side.
There is no excuse for abusing players (particularly our own).
The offending 'fans' undermine the rest of us and the effect may be to ensure the player underperforms!
It would be good if Hammond makes a public apology; but it is our interest to behave in a way that willl bring out the best in him.
The abuse of opposition players is pretty daft too; surely what we want is to avoid stirring them up to play above themselves - we just want to win the game as convincingly as possible!!
