Poyet: Norwich were "very close" to getting Macca

Mackail-Smith is congratulated at the weekend Mackail-Smith is congratulated at the weekend

Albion came within a whisker of losing goal hero Craig Mackail-Smith to Norwich at the end of the transfer window.

They now face an anxious wait to see if the Canaries renew their interest and meet the asking price in January.

The Seagulls rejected an undisclosed bid from Norwich but were sweating on them returning with an improve offer right up until the final hours of the window closing on Friday night.

Boss Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: “It was very close. There was a moment when you get a phone call and someone tells you – I don’t want to say who – they are going to do it and then you start to think ‘Please no’.

“There was that tension all the time. Probably at about six or seven o’clock we just decided we were not taking anything but we didn’t get the call anyway then so we didn’t have to make that decision.”

Poyet’s relief multiplied as two stunning strikes by Mackail-Smith helped Albion to a 3-1 win at Burnley on Saturday.

The Seagulls’ £2.5 million record buy also scored twice in the previous game against Barnsley and is bound to attract more transfer attention when the window re-opens in the New Year if his red-hot start to the season continues. Poyet said: “The problem is there is a value and it’s very difficult to say no, especially to players like Macca. They want to play at the highest level so the easiest way for me as manager and the players is to get promoted together.

“You need to let people have the chance to play in the Premier League so it’s very difficult if they (Norwich) make a very, very good offer, to say no. I’m pleased that they didn’t.”

No disrespect to Norwich, it's a nice club, but hopefully by January they will be rooted to the bottom of the Premiership and we'll be pushing on for the top. That said, I suppose if CMS keeps scoring, other clubs will come sniffing.

Surely the price is not fixed - if CMS is doing the biz - as he is - quote £8 to £10M. Its not complicated this one.

I see CMS as being quite a good fit for Norwich. He would enjoy tying up with his Scotland team mates.
I don't want him to go but I am a bit of a hoarder according to my wife.

But what do I know?

Very glad CMS still with us especially after seeing his two stunning goals against Burnley on the FLS where I am staying in France.
However I did wonder when I saw the Report of the Albion being interested in Tuncay whether he was a potential replacement for CMS.
The signing of Dobbie both excites and intrigues since he isn't exactly the type of target man Poyet was saying he wanted. Is he a substitute for Hoskins ?
After all the activity on Friday I am still left wondering if players such as Sparrow,Painter, Vincelot etc will be going out on loan. Assuming Poyet is still up for it I am anticipating a CB being brought in.
Finally I have seen one or two postings speculating on Vicente (why ?). My only comment is that perhaps Vicente might be allowed to return to Spain when JFC's loan to Oxford ends in January.
Waiting until 14 Sept and the Wednesday game could be boring.

Interesting that we are currently a feeder club for Norwich! I hope this doesn't last much longer. It feels that for Norwich we are a safe bet to buy from, well coached, value-add players from Brighton. CMS is now just starting to reward us with goals, and I hope this continues into the Premership next season. I genuinely feel with our squad that we are serious contenders now, and I'm sure the players will too.

We can only be pleased Norwich never came back and that Gus never had to deal with that call. One of the drawbacks of being successful is that you attract attention from rich Premiership clubs who have the kind of financial clout you cant compete with. Puts Gus's job into perspective when you realise that all he works on to reach a winning formula can be undone by losing your star players to richer clubs. Let's hope we can keep the squad together and that a winning mentality will nurture the kind of spirit where players realise they will be able to play in the premiership one day wearing the blue & white. So much better to get there by winning the Championship than by just accepting a better offer.

Agree. If he's scoring for fun and we are pushing for promotion then he's worth 12m plus because prices seem to be going up all the time. If we go up we'll only have to pay that figure for a striker anyway. Huddersfield caved in at 8m but I dont think they are promotion candidates

I wonder how the player himself felt while Norwich were in for him. If he felt any dissapointment at not going it didn't seem to affect his game at all!. Macca's a great pro and a very decent and honourable bloke, and without doubt will want to showcase his skills in the best division in world football. I hope its with the Albion, but if not, and if he continues banging in the goals i expect to see some serious money on the table for him in January. Norwich, unlikely, i fancy them for the drop,so there would be little point in him going there.

Regrettably, there will be bigger clubs in for CMS than Norwich in January. Norwich clearly fell short on valuation and must be kicking themselves. Radio Sussex reported this morning that the manager still wants a target man. That makes sense - it looks like that would be the missing jigsaw piece for the best squad in the Championship - Lambert and Carroll showed the significance of ariel prowess at the weekend.
If we can be in the top six at January - and we will be - then it will be a significant signing I'm sure.

CMS, like most footballers, will want to play in the Premier League. Based on last season, he is not quite ready for that yet. His form so far has been good and he is rightly attracting attention from other clubs but he isn't stupid. His best option is to stay at The Albion, prove that he is indeed a PL goal scorer, then start looking at offers. Without doubt he has the highest work rate of any footballer I've seen playing for The Albion but he is not the finished article just yet. Norwich came in for him because they thought they'd get him on the cheap like they did with Crofts and Bennett. Not this time Delia, we don't need to sell, don't want to sell and if you want to buy you're going to have to write a mighty big cheque with lots of zeros in the pounds column.

Best move of the game was when we swiftly from our corner flag, directly moving up as a unit and forcing the GK into making a fine save from CMS's volley. You can really see how the squad is perfecting aspects in our play that were missing last year. Same football philosophy but tuned finer.

Too many good things to write about, as far as new signings goes, Bruno is superb, Bridge is great, Kuszsak fantastic and Orlandi looks special from what little we have seen. Hope Crofts makes a speedy recovery. The rest of the old lads, keep up your great work.

We have many testing games ahead but we seem to have the ammunition to keep us in it with a new found consistency and fluidity to our game.

Well they proberly done a deal for jan behind closed doors as it makes sense like They did with Bennett you can't blame him Prem football is were all top players should be and there is no loyalties with clubs and players . They only have 7 yrs at the top of there game and need to make a lifetimes money in that short space of time . Contracts are only compensation packages for clubs these days . Next season CMS will be playing in the prem if he continues to score, of that there is no doubt.
He continues to bang them in and Brighton are promoted, not hard to work that one out.
He continues to bang them in and for some crazy reason we concede more than we score and we don't get promoted, he gets sold, and rightly so.

There are teams that we can expect, but we may be wrong, to be nearer the bottom of the prem than the middle, Southampton and Fulham come to mind, Villa too possibly. Clubs in that position, above the drop zone but not safe, could come in with a big offer that we would find hard to refuse.

There will be clubs that are above middle of the table, the way they are going Liverpool could be one, but need more fire power, they could make a big offer.

There will be clubs that are just outside of a europe placing, they might see CMS's goals as the key to the door and make a big offer to buy that key.

The only teams that will not pose a threat as to buying CMS will be those very near or at the bottom, why go there only to end up back where you came from.

Come January, and if his goals continue to flow there will be a move on him, the size of the offer, the team making the offer and our position in the table will be the deciding factors.

If Liverpool are mid table and feel they need him, they slap 10 million on the table, he goes.
If Spurs are near to a europe placing and need him, make the same offer, he goes.
United, City, Chelsea or Arsenal, any of the top teams, if they want him come january they will get him no matter where we are in the table. The good thing is, if CMS and the team has us in the top six or near automatic promotion, the amount of money clubs would have to pay for him means that we will have a good chance of buying a top striker to replace him.

Gus will not stand in his way, Tony Bloom will not be able to turn down any offer near 10 million. CMS will not choose to join a club near the drop zone but will instantly say yes to any of the top clubs.

The best deal for us would be to say yes to a big offer but only if we do not get promoted, if they want him they can wait for him. If any club wants to remove that clause then they must pay more to get him.

The very thing we want him to do for us is the very thing that will probably take him away from us.

Hovite says...
2:50pm Mon 3 Sep 12

I don't think you can compare this situation to Bennett's gardens04, he moved to a Championship side pushing for promotion and we had more or less clinched our promotion.

I agree without a doubt that all players have ambition to play in the Prem. However they have to decide how confident they are of the team they are in or their belief in the team that are interested in them.

A promotion battle may be preferable to a relegation battle with a small Prem outfit at this stage of a career. Top 6 Prem side would clinch a quick deal, but Norwich would take more thought.

Who knows, there are many factors to consider but CMS will always show good integrity of a situation.

I think Liverpool are going to struggle this year, for me they did not do enough business in the transfer market. If we get an offer that is too good to refuse and that offer gives any one of our players the chance of joining a top club, he goes, no question.

Today we are a championship club and as such, we have to do good business when it is on the table.

What best players have we sold recently? Perhaps EB is the most recent example, but we were a Div 1 side, and he was looking at possible Premiership place. He cost us nowt, did a great job, and moved on swelling the BHA coffers by £1.5 mil. Brighton are in a different place 15 months on. I don't think GM would get into our current 1st team squad, and while Nooney had a good start to the season, with our new signings, he may only have made the Cup squads. We now have a squad realistically placed to compete in the Champ. If we get crazy inflated offers for any of our team, then TB is likely to take them. He is bankrolling BHA, not you or I. However, he wants the same as us, success, and to date, it is very difficult to criticise any of his decisions.

If all goes to plan we will be firmly in the top six, maybe even top two, Brighton will have no plans to sell anyone.

The question will not be, do we want to sell, but what it might be is, can we say no to an offer based purely on the numbers being offered.

I agree with you, it is great living for today and we should all enjoy the ride, and I am sure we will.
As our hopes are realised each week, as we win our games and strive toward promotion, Gus and the board have to start preparations for what might be to come.

Vegas,

Also i don't think Liverpool would touch Gus if Rogers fails, as it would really be a case of employing another unproven up and coming (been there, done that). As for the 'next move'. I think even Gus will wait and see how this all works out apart from the stated intent of a target man and a center (!!!) back whose nessesity and urgency also reamins to be seen.

Funny that, Vegas can't spell soccor and you had a problem with fottball fairweather.

Anyway I agree, it's feetball, we invented it.

Excellent quality live feed mostly in HD shows most premier games, often has the Championship Friday/Sunday/Monday games, watched Brighton on there several times when abroad or traveling, always has Sky sports news and Soccer Saturday show as well as much, much more. HAs about 13 channels, will probably be able to see the Sheff Weds game a week on Friday if you cant get to the Amex.

Slightly off topic but the attendance figures after two home games for almost everyone are showing us as the 15th best supported club in the 4 leagues - joint top of the Championship with Sheff Weds and better than 6 PL clubs. Bearing in mind we also have one of the highest matchday spends outside of ticket prices we really should (parachute payments aside...) be able to compete quite nicely. In fairness after last weeks transfer activity I'm not sure anyone can now say we're not mind you. Another stat related to an earlier post is that £8M Jordan Rhodes, whilst having an excellent scoring record of a goal every other game in nearly 200 appearances has only scored 3 of his 99 league goals at a level higher than League 1. On that basis if CMS does get to 20 this year and I for one would now bet very heavily that he will, I should think £10m isn't unrealistic. And yes I a having a slow afternoon....!

I agree with Bish its far too early to be talking about losing Gus,but i dont think it will happen. What manager could resist the prospect of basically building a club from the bottom up to the top. When Gus gets us in the premier he will have a team that has climbed from the foot of league 1 to the best division in the world, from an 8,500 athletics track to a state of the art 30,750 stadium( who knows maybe even more in the future) with some of the best players available looking to come to us.Brighton & Hove Albion will be his baby so to speak, getting us into europe would be the next step,i cant think of another manager who has ever achieved this with one team, that alone has to be better than going to Spurs for instance and picking up where someone else left off.UTA

If this has already been mentioned then I apologise but I can't be bothered to read 61 other comments..
But this story doesn't make it sound "very close" at all!
Clubs make enquiries all the time and then get told a price they're not willing to pay.... End of!
After a 3-1 win, I'm disappointed in the Argus for peddling a non-story when we should be enjoying a decent performance and disappointed in Gus (who normally gets my vote) for sounding so dramatic..
Apparently I heard we were " very close" to signing Ronaldo instead of Orlandi, but we wouldn't pay the asking price... Zzzzzzzzzzz

Harry Basset with Wimbledon, old 4th division to the 1st and finished 6th when they got there. I believe Alan Cork played for them in every division too, El-Abd could replicate that.

I don't know if anyone has done it playing football though ;-)

I'm amazed the club haven't slapped a £10M price tag on CMS. That would attract only the SERIOUS bids in January , not clubs trying to rip us off.

In view of Macca`s low scoring record last season i cant see Norwich paying much more than we paid for him, hopefully we put a high price ticket on him to ensure he stays with us.

I agree with you but at times we simply can't do anything about it. If we get an offer that is too good to refuse and that offer gives any one of our players the chance of joining a top club, he goes, no question. Today we are a championship club and as such, we have to do good business when it is on the table. Tomorrow we might well be a prem club, we might have the resources to hold on to our players but we have to live in the today in order to reach the tomorrow. .
If we keep selling our best players we will never get into the premier.
Tony Bloom knows that we now have a great opportunity to make the Premier League within a season or two. With the prize money on offer next season (+70% over this year's money) he will want some of that action. Selling our prized assets won't help that. Any club wanting the likes of CMS, Bridcutt etc., are going to have to stump up some serious money. The Albion are no longer the soft touch we were when we were at Withdean.

I wish Gus would just say CMS is going nowhere, we do not need to sell him so let's get some stability in our own team and make our players feel wanted, and also putting the fans at ease. Brighton Bill Yorkshire Seagull..
