Poyet aims for top nine

Gus Poyet believes he has a better team than the one which finished tenth last season Gus Poyet believes he has a better team than the one which finished tenth last season

Albion boss Gus Poyet has targeted a top nine finish in the Championship with his new-look squad.

And he believes they could make the top six if performance levels stay consistently high.

The Seagulls finished tenth last season. Poyet has vowed to improve on that after strengthening his hand by signing Stephen Dobbie, Dean Hammond, David Lopez and Andrea Orlandi in the closing stages of the transfer window.

The Uruguayan told The Argus: “I think we are a more competitive team than last year, I’ve got no doubt about that, so we should do better this year. We need to be inside the top ten, that is our responsibility now.

“That doesn’t mean it is going to be any easier. There are an incredible number of teams trying to get up but, looking only at us and not the opposition, we are definitely a better team. It will depend on us maintaining our performances and being lucky with injuries.”

Gus has obviously been taking private lessons at Tony Blooms poker school. Rule No 1 keep your cards close to your chest and don't give too much away. I'm sure Gus and co would be disappointed if we did actually finish 9th, but I guess we have all learnt by now to take Gus's comments like this one with a pinch of salt.....what he really means is our target is top 6. Very sensible of Gus to manage our expectation this way but he, along with all of us, would be more than a little disappointed if we didn't finish top 6. But he's right, it will be a tough and extremely competitive league this season and I can't wait to get stuck in with this new squad.

Gus comes from Uruguay, and Uruguay is in the southern hemisphere, so perhaps the '9' is upside down, and really he means '6'.

It`s always dangerous to read between the lines.....But i dont think Gus is the sort to "settle" for a top 9 finish,so playoffs at the very least. The thing about this report i like the most is that it is an indication that he is staying for the long haul. After all who states a top 9 finish as their final goal? which suggests to me that should the unthinkable happen and we dont get promotion this year,Gus will strengthen the squad again for next year...Come On You SEAGULLS!

What's the point of aiming for 9th? It won't achieve anything other than being able to say we finished higher than last year. In any case, I thought Gus and TB had both already said we were going for Top 6.

A great quote to keep feet firmly on the ground but I think there will not only be fans but also a few players who have higher expectations than a top 9... It's true that there is fierce competition this time around but with just a little luck, good team selection and some great substitutions we should be in the mix. There you go! 10/10 for stating the blindingly obvious but I feel better for it...!!!

Given that we are just 4 games in to the season, i think it is a perfectly sensible thing to say. He has only really said that he aims to finish higher than last season, and if things go OK and we carry on playing as we are, we should finish in the play-off places.

After all, who knows what bad luck, injury crises or whatever thge next few months could bring.

VegasSeagull says...
10:44am Tue 11 Sep 12

This statement does two things. First, it sets a target that the fans can accept, and if indeed 9th is where we finished it would mean we have had a good season.
The second thing it does, and the most important of the two, it removes a lot of pressure from the players. If after just four games the talk in the dressing room is about promotion it becomes a heavey burden to carry for such along time.

We the fans can speculate as to what is a good season, we can see promotion coming but we don't have the task of delivering what we see.

Quite. I demand to get this service for free, too! I don't want to have to PAY to read stories like this.

For those with a fixation with the number '9', or the ninth position in the league, at no point did he mention this, he just says inside the top 10.

No manager is going to sit there and say, "Yes, I want to finish in 9th place".

Privately he could well be aiming for top three, you just don't know. All that this article states is that he is looking to improve on last year's performance, which, given the investment in new talent is a minimum, I would have thought...

I was only joking.

However, with all the Spanish players he has signed, they would have had to be convinced that Gus in it for the long term and that they are integral to the BHAFC project. It is my assumption that with the signings we have made, that Gus has had to assure them of his commitment to the club.

If Gus goes early, which he won’t, you can be sure that, Tarrico, Calderon, Bruno, Orlandi, Lopez and Vicente would also follow, and the Spanish connection would be ended. I don’t think TB would have risked bringing these Spanish players in unless it was for the long haul.

Maybe reading between the lines, if we finish 10th, Gus will leave.

Anyway apart from all that, from the way we have set out this season I see no reason why we won't be fighting for an automatic promotion until the last few games of the season.

At worst, I see a playoff place, but will settle for really good football, win, lose or draw.

Come on here after a defeat and there's enough negative energy to 'change your life' for the worse: permanently. Perhaps Dr Lipton could use our contributors as a case study… For my part, some gritty realism based on results, performance and hope. Top 3:hopeful. Top 6: feasible. Top 9: achievable.

Indeed. When we go away from home!!! I remember one of my favourite ever games, away at Rotherham 28-12-99 they were on fire and we were supposed to be cannon fodder, but Mickey Adams played three up front and took the game to them and we won 3-1,if your knocking at their door, more often than not it keeps them away from yours.I appreciate all the counter arguements, they will catch you on the break and so on.But with the keeper and back four we have now, surely the quality we have amassed can better anyone in our league purely with our passing and possession.Said it many times before and say it again,It`s a priviledge to be an Albion supporter, just think of all those poor people who are`nt!!! I think as a striker the lad is better than those around him, as is Ince in MHO.
The service yesterday was bad
and the linking play wasn't much better.

Put this boy upfront and with all the experience we have in midfield and I think he could deliver.
There is a question mark over him, I wouldn't deny that but, if he had the chance to settle in with Brighton I think in the logn run he will show his true talent. He clearly isn't the finished article yet but he could become more so if he joined us.

Let go of the FEAR of being DIFFERENT and become real leaders! I've been thinking it would also be cool if we could come up with a fantastic NEW positive Albion song. Easy to remember and easy for EVERYONE to join in and sing. We CAN make this OUR year! C'mmon you Seagulls
You may be on to something with this positive energy thing. Perhaps at the start of a match we could sing a song to the officials to get them onside.
Men in Black might be appropriate...

Here come the men in black
Football rules enforcers....

Come on you Refsssss.

The referees a legend etc etc.

If I was a ref and was getting abuse, I would give the fans something to give me abuse me about, it's a hard enough job for them as it is. However, I am not perfect, when we had 2 sent off against Burnley in the first 10 mins at the Amex last year, I did sing about the the ref, but I would say as a general rule it is best not to.
Me too Hovite - Burnley was a real test of my philosophy and I confess to having a 'slip' - I really think that is human and what I think we're both referring to is the systematic, pre meditated, abuse. If that can be changed to something positive and humouress - we'd have every TV and Radio Station and Newspaper reporting on our club - in the positive - manner! All those things can add to momentum, where positive energy flows - success goes! I do have a very special feeling about this year. Although I love watching Vicente - something feels right that we are no longer seeing him as the one and only to unlock the doors! It feels that he's going to have to get his head right - which is where I believe his problem lies - and then he'll be one of a few who can do that job. Looking forward to Friday.
Actually - Im not usually one who slags off the officials... but I must admit that during that Burnley game I was fuming. It just seemed so laughably biased - all the decisions went Burnley's way - and Im ashamed to say I joined in the mock applause for the hapless ref...
Oh well... looking forward to the ex-Saturday Friday Wednesday game...
Yeah tooncgull; we are only human, and that game wasn't of the norm that day. The stadium was in full chorus and probably the loudest the Amex has been up until now.

I do like good banter but I am also very aware that there are children and families in the stadium.
For Amex read Turfmoor.

There are 18 out of 24 clubs (6 struggers trying to avoid relegation) fighting for the top 6 places. 9th is a reasonable statement of intent considering some of the teams in this league.

SicklySeagull.

Satisfied finishing between 6th and 8th, like 7th?

Man if we finished 7th I would be gutted, to miss the playoffs by one spot would be agony for me.

Be happy with what we have achieved, what would we have achieved finishing 7th. If you mean getting into our new stadium, that was last season's news.

We can't afford to be a team in the Premier, so when will we be, how will we, what would change as the seasons go by to give us more money, nothing.

We want to get there and once there, we need to survive for a couple of seasons to build the money in the bank that being in the Premier brings.

Standing still is not an option.

I had to read this twice before believing the words.
Sorry, I must have stepped back in time to an era when many fans could not comprehend us reaching the top flight.
As Vegas rightly states "Standing still is not an option"
Anyone seen that Tardis anywhere?

Brentford are poised to offer Brighton's 20 year old Redwood a contract.
The ypung wing back has impressed during his trial period. The lad has prviously been at Dover on loan.
VegasSeagull others may have said this but both your TalkSport report on Miquel and the Redmond Brentford story are 'old' news items that broke around the last 10 days in July. Redmond did sign for Brentford after being released by the Albion.
Miquel would be an excellent loan sugning since he is a left sided CB who can also play left back. However since he hasn't already been signed I suspect it won't happen
I notice that on the end of the report there is a 'throwaway' remark re the club's ideas on signing a target man on loan. Haas anybody heard if we are pursuing any playerin particular ?

He'll be thinking of his job. If he says the target is 5th and he misses it, he will be for the high jump. If he says top 10 and finishes 9th he has achieved his goal and it makes it harder to sack him. Psychology.

Now I thought I had heard the reports before but the date on them was current so I posted them.
I haven't seen or heard a word about who or when re target man.
Thanks for pointing out my error and no, nobody else mentioned it.
