Poyet spoilt for choice
5:00pm Monday 17th September 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Gus Poyet, pondering who to pick
Gus Poyet admits it is much tougher to pick his Albion team now that he is spoilt for choice.
Recent signings Stephen Dobbie Andrea Orlandi and David Lopez are all pushing for their first starts at Watford tomorrow night after late substitute appearances in Friday's 3-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday.
Poyet said: "With the squad I've got now it's harder. In the past it would have been very easy, play the same team. Now we have got players who are at a very good level and probably deserve to play.
"It's something knew for me. You only get that in top teams, when you go to a team that has 18 or 20 players and anyone can play at any time, so then you need to manage that differently.
"We've had 13 or 14 every year more or less, now we've got a lot, so it will be harder.
"I prefer that, because that means I am going to be responsible for picking the right team. It is the only real way I can affect the game and I like to affect the game."

It must be better for Gus having lots of choice as opposed to having very little choice last season when he had to field less than fit players. All of the players old and new will get their chance over a long season. The only possible ever present will be our super goal keeper.

I mentioned in a different post that Watford commited the most fouls in the division during their weekend match, this could be a physical test as well as a skills test.
I can't see any change in the back four, and CMS will start if fit so possibly a different strike partner for CMS or maybe someone to add some physical strength in midfield.
To be honest I haven't got a clue as to what I would do in his (Gus) shoes, anyone got any ideas?

Let's hope we play better than we did at Watford last season. That was a game I thought we would win but we were very disappointing on the night.
I haven't got any idea as to just how good we are, maybe tuesday will tell us more.
Most pundits thought that Wednesday would give us a test, I know I did, but we out classed them, no test.
Watford look to be a better team when playing at home so maybe we will be tested, who knows.
When looking at their team and the results they have this season, and comparing to us, I don't think a draw will occur. One thing for sure the Watford defense can be broken down so maybe we take the game 2-0, maybe.

Neither do I, Vegas. I know we have a lot stronger squad than last season and CMS rediscovering his shooting boots is hugely encouraging. But I also think the competition is stronger with 10-12 teams in with a shout of promotion. Against those odds, you're going to need to be lucky as well as good.

It may be a new situation for Poyet but as a result of the International break he should now know rather more about the new players than he knew 14 days ago.
If Poyet signs a Target man and a CB, both of which he is still on record as wanting, then the team/squad selection will become even more 'complicated' still.
Personally I think it is a good thing that Poyet is going to have these sort of issues to face over the coming months. The knowledge acquired now will help him mature further as a Manager.
Howeve,r subject to CMS's fitness, I don't anticipate any changes to the starting line up or bench selection tomorrow night so we won't get to see this 'new knowledge' being applied in the immediate future. This means it will probably be a couple of Matches before new players like Lopez get to start.
With Hosco and Crofts also now due to become available again shortly things should become really interesting....
On top of all this JFC's loan to Oxford is due to end in January. No wonder players like Sparrow were warned that their chances of playing were slim !

changed with the addition of Bruno and Bridge
We now push much further out from our back line of 3/4 with confidence and we are not caught out so often as last year playing square balls across the 18 yd line etc and being forced to play passing football too deep
Our style and urgency this season is
fantastic to watch and CMS is finally getting all the ball he needs because we are playing our football much further up the pitch and support is coming from full backs ,midfield and fair to say all over the place
This is going to be a very exciting season once again

All I know is that I would love to see him pull some tricks out of the bag for us at some time this season but if not I feel we have enough depth in squad to cope

On a broader note I think that in the longer term Dobbie will come in for Barnes. What Gus does now have is a squad that enables him to change the way we play either before or during a game. He has learnt from last season where we were one-dimensional.

I think where he plays next season might well be a choice of the level of football versus cash in the bank.
That decision in turn would probably depend on whether the Albion are in the Premiership.
If we were promoted then Bridge might want one more go at playing at the very top level. If not then securing his fiscal future may win out.
The advantage Bridge has this year is that he is getting regular first ream football and banking considerable sums of money. This in turn might make it easier for him to make a decision based on his football ambitions not his financial ones.
However I feel the club would be well advised to plan for a future without Bridge. Great if he can be persuaded to extend his stay but have a replacement already in the club in case he doesn't. Signing a young player who could learn from Bridge and cover for him in case of injury would seem to be the sensible pragmatic approach.

The last we heard from Bridge was to tell us how much he is enjoying life with Brighton, indeed he told us of the change within him. He also said that it was not impossible that he could continue to wear the stripes after htis season, or words to that effect.
If promotion happens then I feel sure that he would stay for one more year but I think that is all. Life in the prem is different to life in the championship. Life in America would be even more different.
