El-Abd: This team is the best

Adam El-Abd celebrates his goal at The Den Adam El-Abd celebrates his goal at The Den

Adam El-Abd has saluted the current Albion side as the best in his 18 years at the club.

The long-serving defender was full of praise for his team-mates after his first goal for 22 months helped secure a 2-1 victory at Millwall for the table-topping Seagulls.

El-Abd, 28, told The Argus: “It is most definitely the best. Our team is strong, our squad is strong and I think that is a great sign for the future.

“It’s scary really how far the club has come in such a short space of time under Gus (Poyet). It’s early, early days and we are not getting carried away but I really do feel we can be there or thereabouts.

“We have got some calibre in the squad and it’s great to be part of it.”

The extra quality injected into the squad by Poyet’s summer transfer business was emphasised by a crucial late save from Tomasz Kuszczak which preserved Albion’s fifth straight victory.

The Polish international denied former Seagull Chris Wood a second goal on his full debut late on for ten-man Millwall after they had substitute Chris Taylor sent-off.

“Tomasz has been outstanding already,” said El-Abd. “In the seven games we’ve had in the league he has already won us points.

“The less we ask of him the better because that will mean we are doing our jobs in the back four, but when he is called upon he has been absolutely fantastic.”

I have to say, I was surprised when El-Abd got the nod over Dunk at the beginning of the season. Very happy to have been proved wrong, as along with the rest of the defence, he's been immense. Long may it continue

It's been said before but Adam is Gus' finest achievement. The change in his ability since Gus arrived is quite amazing and if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have thought it was possible at that stage of a player's career. AEA must now be one of the first names on the teamsheet - totally dependable and totally committed. Keep it up Adam as you are now a very fine player.

Agree with all posts about Adam. A few years ago he did not have a clue about how to defend or play football and was arguably one of our worst players. Now he is comfortable and assured on the ball and fully committed to the cause. Fully expect him to retain his position for the entire season, barring injury!

What a stupid comment. He did not have a clue how to defend ? Really ? How come he was a professional football player then ? Are you a professional football player, sitting in judgement ? He did not know how to play football ? Twerp.
For my money he was always a prospect, and I backed that up with my own money when I spnsored his shirt three seasons running at Withdean. Very happy that he is still at the club, and in the first team, and in the Egypt squad. Magnificent attitude to go with his footballing talent.

Agree Mark, leave player decisions to the management team, i thought Adam would struggle at this level, but he must be one of the first names on the team sheet. I doubt many strikers like coming up against him, just cut out the occasional over reactions as if he's been hit by Mike Tyson.

Not all professional defenders know how to defend. Look at Birmingham on Satuday against Barnsley. Looks good for Albion against Brum Saturday evening.

Oh dear, that hit a nerve!! You must be his agent or mother! You are clearly new to this site, as if not you would realise that I always have respect for Adam, his talent, how far he has come and the fact that he bleeds blue and white! My remarks should be placed in context, however, the fact remains he was very poor until Gus gave him the right direction and training. This he did not get under Booker and Co! Most on here would know what I was saying, so I dont believe that I am that much of a "Twerp"!!

Yep, Birmingham should be playing it like a cup tie on Saturday. After 0-5 v Barnsley their jobs are all on the line. Depends also whether Marlon King is fit to play as he can be very dangerous. My fear is that it will be a 0-0 or 1-1 draw or even a 0-1 defeat, but I hope we scrape the win we ought to get - say, 2-1.
Of course, there is the possibility that if the players don't rate their new manager (Chris Hughton their manager last year clearly's a good manager), then Birmingham may well continue to plummet until Lee Clarke is sacked, in which case Brighton will also profit from the players lack of motivation. So, we could also put 5 past them. Of course it also depends on whether CMS and Bruno have recovered so it might well be a routine 2-0 victory.

On the other hand........yawn!

PS one wag suggested 10-1, based on us beating Barnsley 5-1 (who beat Brum 5-0).

Any other forecasts?

kwaidam says...

would have been better if Brum had lost 0-1 than 0-5... sure to be a backlash of some kind. however, they are a poor side and we should beat them. be closer than many think though?? 2-1? maybe the albion coming from behind, we don't do it very often.... ps. was at the den on saturday and anyone know what casper did to annoy the millwall fans so much?

Yes we beat Barnsley 5-1, it looks as though we taught them a lesson they were glad to learn, they out played Blackburn last week 62% to 48% but lost 2-1 then beat Birmingham 5-0 again 62% to 48%. most reports said Barnsley worst team seen @ B&HA for a long time. They were able to out play the 2 `B`s by playing `keep ball`. must keep our eye on them & hope not to many others try to copy our great team.

Agree with Mark5, Adam had loads of potential when he first started, but wasn't given proper coaching and so didn't develop his game until Gus arrived. I would say that about Dean hammond too, his first few games showed that he had a lot of talent and potential, but didn't develop properly until he went to Southampton. The other Mark who posts on here (or used to) was fairly accurate in his summation of the previous coaching staff and the youth and soccer schools coaching.

Oh really? Sounds like it could be Cockney rhyming slang for some of the posters on here....

Not his agent or mother but possibly Adam himself insulted by your comment
Calm down everyone, Mark5 has been posting on here for a long time,I've always enjoyed his comments, but perhaps he was a little strong regarding Adams pre Gus ability. Anyway, what's a "Twerp" ?
''Twerp'' is a term that was used a lot by my parents and grand parents during the 30's, 40's and 50's. It meant a ''Stupid ****'' A lot more disparaging remarks are used now
A stupid fool, thanks for clarifying that for me Saraman.
Anyone know the origins of 'Berk"? Good luck getting it through the firewall...

when we played Spurs on the Amex opening day, he came and shook hands with hundreds of fans in the west stand, despite having a leg in plaster. Anyone who says he is not a great professional is dreaming

One of the reasons that El-Abd suffered previously in his career was that previous managers insisted on playing him at right back. He should have been a CB but was played out of position constantly so although Gus has improved his ability, the skill was already there. He had played in the Championship before in 2006, so wasn't totally unused at this level.
