Macca set to miss home run at The Amex

Craig Mackail-Smith is not expected to be fit for the next two home games Craig Mackail-Smith is not expected to be fit for the next two home games

ALBION expect Craig Mackail-Smith to miss an Amex double header.

The Championship leaders fear their leading marksman will be forced to sit out Saturday’s home match against Birmingham and the visit of Ipswich on Tuesday.

But Mackail-Smith should be back for the next away game on October 6 at Derby, where he scored the only goal last season.

The hamstring muscle damage suffered by Mackail-Smith in the first half of Saturday’s win at Millwall is not severe but enough to sideline him for ten days.

It is an inconvenience for the Seagulls, with their rejuvenated record buy in such hot form.

Mackail-Smith has scored in four of the last five games and six goals in total but manager Gus Poyet has options to cover his absence.

Ashley Barnes scored on his instant return to the starting line-up at Millwall and Stephen Dobbie is available for his full debut after coming through a run-out in the Development League on Monday night.

Either or both could start against Birmingham, with Barnes poised to resume penalty taking duties after Mackail-Smith struck from the spot at Watford last week while he was on the bench.

CMS will be sorely missed for two games but it makes sense not to risk long term injury. I feel sure that we have enough depth and skill to take the next 6 points without too much trouble. Roll on Saturday.

Agreed. We can't get too complacent, as any team can beat any other on their day in this league - but, as long as we show the consistency Gus is after across the whole squad, we should be expecting at least 4 points from these 2 home games. And 2 performances like we had against Wednesday ought to give us all 6 points and a chance to pull even further ahead of at the top. I hope that's incentive enough to the players to keep our form going!

I agree Saraman. We will miss CMS but we now have enough strength and depth in the squad to cover injuries like this one. Smegbuster is right too - no complacency, but its hard not to want to gloat when we are top with a two point lead. Exciting times!

ith at least one of the wingers on at all times. On monday he set up at least 2 of our 6 goals playing this way.Any thoughts.UTA

Shame about Macca but it was always going to happen. He works so hard and pushes his body so much - maybe too much but love his commitment to the team.

Dobbies time to shine and maybe soon so will Lopez.

Orlandi has proven himself in my books. He works well as a defencive midfielder when called upon and can deliver fantastic crosses which has set up a couple of goals already (Greer and El Abd/ Barnes)

Just watched the highlights of the development squad against Colchester, although Dobbie didn't score, he did make some killer passes leading to goals, play him just behind Barnes on Saturday and we should have no problems.

The situation gives Gus the opportunity to try other options without dropping anyone, so there's the silver lining to this particular cloud. Maybe Gus even relishes the challenge. Agree that Dobbie/Barnes seems the most likely pairing to start with, and reckon it could provide some fireworks if Dobbie is on his game...
Not a bad plan B on paper, and C & D probably aren't too shabby either!

CMS is certainly going to be missed, as his attributes are unique in the team. But, short of finding a clone, Gus will know enough about Dobbie and of course Barnes at centre forward to be confident about compensating CMS's absence.Dobbie must be itching to get on from the start and show us what he's capable of. I'm confident and neither Brum nor the tractor boys will be relishing their trip to the Amex, although!!

I agree that whilst CMS is a loss it will be exciting to see what Dobbie can do playing behind Barnes with AB as the focal point for once. I certainly trust Barnes in this role – as a natural finisher I think he’s every bit as good as CMS if not better. His finish for his second against Barnsley was superb and Saturday’s v Millwall wasn’t far behind. He also won’t let us down in terms of work rate either. We’ll be fine, this squad can cope with the loss of any one member in my opinion.

11:32am Wed 26 Sep 12

It is a shame, just after he was putting a good run of goalscoring together. However, we have plenty of options and goals will come from all areas of the pitch, so I am not concerned. Let us not expect an easy time with Birmingham. They will be well supported and looking to put the Barnsley ghost behind them very quickly. A narrow win is my prediction and the customary nail biting last 20 minutes for us fans!!

Gee Jay says...
11:50am Wed 26 Sep 12

I agree with most, CMS is a fantastic asset and an example to others. But when asked to step up by Gus, Ashley Barnes has always does so,
Dave from Bexhill has a point that many might have noticed, that in October we have some matches against likely contenders. The Albion have been making sure they pick up points from those teams that are unlikely to feature in the top half of the table come March. Hull and Cardiff results prove the point, but we have got into top gear since those two games.

Hovite says...
11:55am Wed 26 Sep 12

I think we will start with Barnes in his normal position and Dobbie will have to keep the Brums defense working until he is worn out. He might not have the pace of CMS, but neither has Barnes. Dobbie should make up for it with skill, awareness and experience.

I am disappointed about CMS but equally I am excited to see how we play without him.

I suppose Barnes has a reasonable record and Dobbie whilst not prolific, could trouble them. And Hammond looks like he's due a goal, oh and Buckley's got a good finish. Bridge has got a couple and always looks capable, Bruno's gone close a few times (not the free kick though!). And then Greer and El Abd look dangerous from corners. I even remember Bridcutt scored a couple of scorchers but that was awhile ago now...

An interesting point you make Lachance about rotating players since there is an article in today's Argus where CMS says that the players are 'ready for Gus Poyet's squad rotation'.
Obviously CMS being injured is forcing this 'rotation' on Poyet but it is good to see that a pragmatic long term view is being taken.
As Too many Harvey's points out Barnes is a good finisher and he works hard too - in a less eye catching manner. Dobbie's creativity judging from the posts about his performance for the Development squad might be just what we might need especially Lachance if you are right and Birmingham and Ipswich pack their defences.
There is one stat that is quoted in the Argus's 'Rotation' article which I found most illuminating and which demonstrates how different we are this season compared with last.
Apparently CMS and Barnes combined have already had 34 shots this season. In the whole of last season the total for the two of them was 133 !
Whilst I am looking forward to Saturday I do so with caution since I expect Birmingham to react strongly to their 5-0 drubbing against Barnsley.

We do have goals in us from all over the pitch, although when a side has a prolific in form striker like CMS, it does rather focus the oppositions concentration on him. This can be a great advantage to other goal threats, with perhaps a little more freedom. It would be disappointing not to take maximum points against two struggling sides before things get tougher in October.

How true that is Irishgull. Following our next 2 games it will be a fair bet that one of them will be sacked if not both. Six points up for grabs for The Albion. Still a little concerned over our scoring potential without CMS. The next 2 games will be a test of character and squad strength.

Brighton are not a one man team, I don't agree that if CMS does not play then we stand a chance of drawing rather than winning. The team has shown thta it can score from different quarters. Dobbie will see the next two or three games as a chance to stake a claim for a regular place on the sheet. Barnes can control his temper, we saw that against Millwall, I think he will step up his game.
We have players in midfield that can score and our defense is becoming dangerous from set peices.
No way are we a one man team. Two wins from the next two games.

Losing CMS is a blow, of course, but we have immense strength in depth this term so we should worry not. Plus... we have the brilliant Will Buckley who is probably the coolest finisher on the books. I dont think CMS's absence will affect us unduly. We have Dobbie, Barnes or maybe Toby to play up front and we are fortunate to be playing 3 less than average teams. Also our new style of play getting so many more players into our opponents half, increases the number of chances we create. With Bridge, Bruno, Greer and El Abd already getting on the score sheet as well as Hammond and Croft, we do appear to create far more options than last year. I also feel we should/could get 9 points from the next three matches. It'll be incredible to win 8 on the trot but on paper and current form, it is quite possible. Anyone know if Vicente is going to be available soon ?

Guys. Some interesting points raised. I'm not saying this to be deliberately controversial, but I don't think we'll miss CMS as much as most other posters seem to think we will.

Against Burnley he was unplayable and I hear he was very good at Hull too. On the otherhand last week at Watford he was ordinary and missed a good chance to kill the game after he potted the penalty. In the home games against Cardiff and Barnsley he was average - I know he scored a couple in the latter, but Barnes was the better of the two by some way in that game.

He is a good striker but I think we can manage without him. From what I've seen of Dobbie, he is more skillful, tries the more audacious and has more vision to link in other players. He has less speed than CMS, is not as fit and does not chase the ball down as much (few strikers do). He'll do for me in the next two games.

Please don't think I'm saying CMS isn't a good striker coz I'm not, but I am saying that the woes predicted by some posters that if we lose him we can't cope, are wide of the mark. I've faith enough in our squad to believe that we can cope with his loss.

I think that's pretty spot on Dr B and, as I said last week or something, goals are being created and scored all over, by players in all positions.

On another point, it is interesting to see the difference in opinion of CMS now, compared with the days leading up to the transfer deadline where he was off to Norwich.

Does CMS get his place back when fit or does he have to wait until we have a downturn in results or a injury to one of our new front line set up.
Barnes might be suspended by then
Once fit again, I'm sure that CMS will be straight back into the team and in my view rightly so.What I think is different this term is that if he hits a barren patch again, Gus at least has other excellent options to step in and it's up to the likes of Dobbie and others to prove there worth and to try and make it impossible for Gus to leave them out. Hopefully this will be a good problem for Gus to solve.

Really pleased he has had a good start to this season, just hope it teaches people to have a bit of patience.

PS, not many posts on this story...

Trying not to get carried away, and failing, but wanted to say that I watched that programme on TV and was at first disappointed. It was about last season and seemed so dated. I watched it thinking, the stadium is so different now and so is the team. The progress we are making is simply astonishing to this ex-pat.

Obviously I get most of my information second hand. I seem to remember the season before last, Gus was always talking about getting a target man. Never happened and Glenn Murray, Ashley Barnes both got 20+ and Chris Wood got 19. Poor old Sandaza couldn't get a look in, went back to Scotland and is doing well.

I love CMS but I get the impression that Gus is pretty ruthless and very professional. Would we have it any other way? Noone was a crowd favourite but a good offer came in and off you go son. If Dobbie comes in and we keep winning, he will keep the shirt. That is only right and I am sure will be accepted by CMS. He is not a prima dona. If Norwich do come in with a silly offer for him then fair enough. If the lad can advance himself, they are in the Premiership after all, he would go with my best wishes. The grass isn't always greener but players have to take the opportunities that arise. Whatever happened to Elliot Bennett?

The thing is, we are in with the big boys now. Brighton players are being looked at because of the football we play. Premiership teams will loan players to us because they know they get a good education. They will also look at our players to try and cherry pick. We have seen it already. This is good because young players know they will get a higher profile playing for us. Forget this loyalty crap. Supporters are loyal, players are employees.

Tug, with you on that but as I get older Palace seem much less relevant to where we are now. I do feel we have left them behind and I think they know that.

I also think Vicente was charmed by Gus and offered the chance to resurrect his career at Brighton. Gus brings a high profile, a huge personality and immense personal charm. Tony Bloom is a shrewd judge and made a great choice.

Vicente may well turn out to be seen as disappointing but the fact that he signed for us was a huge statement by the club. It says we are playing with the big boys now. Look who has followed him. Our back 5 is Premiership standard, I don't care what anyone says. The other signings have blown my mind, to be honest.

I'm just gonna sit in the sun and watch this incredible story unfold before me. I have never met him but I will always be thankful for Tony Bloom.

I`m sorry Ken ,not a good day for me.I think your assesment is probably the same as ours, except some dont want to see it,they think he is some sort of supersub. If he cant play ,tell him goodbye,go home loser, those that are here are winners, and they will collect their medals at the end of the season to prove their achievements. To those that take offence at this post,I would crawl across broken glass naked to see my Albion,WHERE IS Vicente!!!!!!!

tug509 Vicente has been "fragile" for some years now, hence the knowing looks from the locals here. Lots of people on here have said he is the best player they have ever seen in the stripes. I can only take their word for that. He is, without doubt, a superb footballer and if anyone can get the best out of him I reckon Gus can. With the squad we have now hardly anyone asks where he is. Will he respond to the challenge? Gus will expect him to, for sure. We'll see.

Yeah tug, I know where you are coming from. It is frustrating but it's not his job to tell us and the club have to be careful what they say. Don't forget he speaks less English than I speak Spanish. So I am not going to call him out on that!

I know Gus says "It's difficult" a lot of the time and I am sure it is. We are not talking journey men players here. We ain't used to this. Wayne Bridge! ffs! Can you see him at Withdean? It's a different ball game and we have to get used to this. Great innit!

Tug, a fully fit Vicente should be in a top team in a top division, he is world class, if he did not have a history of niggly injury, he would be elsewhere.

Gus thinks his talent is worth the gamble and so do I, if he only makes it for the last ten games of the season I will be happy.

I was frustrated by his absence last season until I changed the way I thought about it, you have to see it as a treat when he appears, because it is.

As one of the many fans that live abroad the Seagulls are the one thing that I miss more than anything. In the early 70s I used to wait until Monday morning to get the local paper to check out the resultts, now with a few clicks I can join in the banter and feel part of what is undoubtedly the most exciting time to be a fan.For those of us that are retired we have the time to sit at our PC and reply to postings and it fills our evenings. Now Winter is coming and less time can be spent outdoors you might find us on here more often.I am more fortunate than some in that I am just the other side of the Channel and so can get to a few games but others cannot so please be gentle.
