Macca set to miss home run at The Amex
9:30am Wednesday 26th September 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Craig Mackail-Smith is not expected to be fit for the next two home games
ALBION expect Craig Mackail-Smith to miss an Amex double header.
The Championship leaders fear their leading marksman will be forced to sit out Saturday’s home match against Birmingham and the visit of Ipswich on Tuesday.
But Mackail-Smith should be back for the next away game on October 6 at Derby, where he scored the only goal last season.
The hamstring muscle damage suffered by Mackail-Smith in the first half of Saturday’s win at Millwall is not severe but enough to sideline him for ten days.
It is an inconvenience for the Seagulls, with their rejuvenated record buy in such hot form.
Mackail-Smith has scored in four of the last five games and six goals in total but manager Gus Poyet has options to cover his absence.
Ashley Barnes scored on his instant return to the starting line-up at Millwall and Stephen Dobbie is available for his full debut after coming through a run-out in the Development League on Monday night.
Either or both could start against Birmingham, with Barnes poised to resume penalty taking duties after Mackail-Smith struck from the spot at Watford last week while he was on the bench.

Dobbies time to shine and maybe soon so will Lopez.
Orlandi has proven himself in my books. He works well as a defencive midfielder when called upon and can deliver fantastic crosses which has set up a couple of goals already (Greer and El Abd/ Barnes)

Dave from Bexhill has a point that many might have noticed, that in October we have some matches against likely contenders. The Albion have been making sure they pick up points from those teams that are unlikely to feature in the top half of the table come March. Hull and Cardiff results prove the point, but we have got into top gear since those two games.

OMG (and not GMO, which I think some of you guys are on...!) this is really uninspiring. So here's something a little more interesting to be thinking about. A recent piece on Clubcall mentioned that the latest Braga (Portugal) home game had attracted scouts from the following 3 clubs. Man Utd, Man City and... Brighton. So, do something useful - even if it is only speculation - and identify the Brighton target... By the way Braga were playing against Rio Ave... Apparently Utd and City may have interest in Braga's Portuguese winger Barbosa and the Brazilian left back Ismailly... and us? Mouth watering isn't it...?
Maybe it is to find the missing striker...Well, what are you waiting for?

I suppose Barnes has a reasonable record and Dobbie whilst not prolific, could trouble them. And Hammond looks like he's due a goal, oh and Buckley's got a good finish. Bridge has got a couple and always looks capable, Bruno's gone close a few times (not the free kick though!). And then Greer and El Abd look dangerous from corners. I even remember Bridcutt scored a couple of scorchers but that was awhile ago now...

We have a team in depth now so it should not be a problem rotating players is what moden football is all about.Barns will do his best and score in the next two games but l have a feeling that Birmingham and lpswich will play with ten full backs and a goalkeeper.
Obviously CMS being injured is forcing this 'rotation' on Poyet but it is good to see that a pragmatic long term view is being taken.
As Too many Harvey's points out Barnes is a good finisher and he works hard too - in a less eye catching manner. Dobbie's creativity judging from the posts about his performance for the Development squad might be just what we might need especially Lachance if you are right and Birmingham and Ipswich pack their defences.
There is one stat that is quoted in the Argus's 'Rotation' article which I found most illuminating and which demonstrates how different we are this season compared with last.
Apparently CMS and Barnes combined have already had 34 shots this season. In the whole of last season the total for the two of them was 133 !
Whilst I am looking forward to Saturday I do so with caution since I expect Birmingham to react strongly to their 5-0 drubbing against Barnsley.

The main concern must be Barnes's disciplinary record. He is 1 booking away from a ban. Lets hope he does not pick this up on Saturday, as we will then be struggling to fill the gap next week, while CMS is recovering.
I am still waiting to see some sort of update on Hosko's fitness and when he might become available for selection.

i feel a very important point in the next two games is two managers under alot of pressure. Both lee clarke and jewell appear to have issues with players and fans! The time is good to play them both, before the managers are sacked, and new appointments are made, which usually leads to a upturn in fortunes.

Barnes can control his temper, we saw that against Millwall, I think he will step up his game.
On his present form CMS would likely had his goal tally increased over the next two home games, without him we could lose points, however following the two winning matches away from home the loss of a couple of points would still keep us in the top half of the table.
We have players in midfield that can score and our defense is becoming dangerous from set peices.
No way are we a one man team. Two wins from the next two games.

Against Burnley he was unplayable and I hear he was very good at Hull too. On the otherhand last week at Watford he was ordinary and missed a good chance to kill the game after he potted the penalty. In the home games against Cardiff and Barnsley he was average - I know he scored a couple in the latter, but Barnes was the better of the two by some way in that game.
He is a good striker but I think we can manage without him. From what I've seen of Dobbie, he is more skillful, tries the more audacious and has more vision to link in other players. He has less speed than CMS, is not as fit and does not chase the ball down as much (few strikers do). He'll do for me in the next two games.
Please don't think I'm saying CMS isn't a good striker coz I'm not, but I am saying that the woes predicted by some posters that if we lose him we can't cope, are wide of the mark. I've faith enough in our squad to believe that we can cope with his loss.

Obviously I get most of my information second hand. I seem to remember the season before last, Gus was always talking about getting a target man. Never happened and Glenn Murray, Ashley Barnes both got 20+ and Chris Wood got 19. Poor old Sandaza couldn't get a look in, went back to Scotland and is doing well.
I love CMS but I get the impression that Gus is pretty ruthless and very professional. Would we have it any other way? Noone was a crowd favourite but a good offer came in and off you go son. If Dobbie comes in and we keep winning, he will keep the shirt. That is only right and I am sure will be accepted by CMS. He is not a prima dona. If Norwich do come in with a silly offer for him then fair enough. If the lad can advance himself, they are in the Premiership after all, he would go with my best wishes. The grass isn't always greener but players have to take the opportunities that arise. Whatever happened to Elliot Bennett?
The thing is, we are in with the big boys now. Brighton players are being looked at because of the football we play. Premiership teams will loan players to us because they know they get a good education. They will also look at our players to try and cherry pick. We have seen it already. This is good because young players know they will get a higher profile playing for us. Forget this loyalty crap. Supporters are loyal, players are employees.

What's all this grief for VegasSeagull? I am only an occasional visitor here so as an outsider this all smacks of cyber bullying. All you keyboard warriors, take a look at yourselves. Are you even aware of how stupid you look? Up to you.

I also think Vicente was charmed by Gus and offered the chance to resurrect his career at Brighton. Gus brings a high profile, a huge personality and immense personal charm. Tony Bloom is a shrewd judge and made a great choice.
Vicente may well turn out to be seen as disappointing but the fact that he signed for us was a huge statement by the club. It says we are playing with the big boys now. Look who has followed him. Our back 5 is Premiership standard, I don't care what anyone says. The other signings have blown my mind, to be honest.
I'm just gonna sit in the sun and watch this incredible story unfold before me. I have never met him but I will always be thankful for Tony Bloom.

Tug, all I can say is that I live in the Valencia region. I was excited when we signed him but the locals looked at me, shrugged and smiled. My Spanish is not great but I was definitely given the impression,"Wel
l, good luck with that!"

tug509 Vicente has been "fragile" for some years now, hence the knowing looks from the locals here. Lots of people on here have said he is the best player they have ever seen in the stripes. I can only take their word for that. He is, without doubt, a superb footballer and if anyone can get the best out of him I reckon Gus can. With the squad we have now hardly anyone asks where he is. Will he respond to the challenge? Gus will expect him to, for sure. We'll see.

I know Gus says "It's difficult" a lot of the time and I am sure it is. We are not talking journey men players here. We ain't used to this. Wayne Bridge! ffs! Can you see him at Withdean? It's a different ball game and we have to get used to this. Great innit!

Gus thinks his talent is worth the gamble and so do I, if he only makes it for the last ten games of the season I will be happy.
I was frustrated by his absence last season until I changed the way I thought about it, you have to see it as a treat when he appears, because it is.

Trying not to get carried away, and failing, but wanted to say that I watched that programme on TV and was at first disappointed. It was about last season and seemed so dated. I watched it thinking, the stadium is so different now and so is the team. The progress we are making is simply astonishing to this ex-pat.
