Sub Buckley saves a point
10:03pm Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in Albion By Brian Owen
Will Buckley swoops to score the equaliser (photo Simon Dack)
Will Buckley came off the bench to salvage a point for Albion at The Amex tonight.
But the 1-1 draw with Ipswich knocks them off the top of the Championship.
Buckley, a big threat after his 62nd minute introduction, struck from close range after good work by right-back Inigo Calderon.
Calderon was at fault for the Ipswich opener when Daryl Murphy got in front of him to head home at the far post on 27 minutes after a great cross by Carlos Edwards.
Tomasz Kuszczak kept Albion in the game by denying Murphy straight after half-time.
Then the hosts stepped up a gear playing towards the North Stand.
Stephen Dobbie’s deflected shot looped narrowly wide, Ashley Barnes was just off target and Scott Loach parried a LuaLua blast.
Calderon forced his way to the byline before getting the ball low across goal for Buckley to finish in the 80th minute.
But Albion did not look like completing the job and a point was the most they merited.

Disappointing to take only one point from six at home to Brum and Ipswich, but on the bright side, we do have three quality players (CMS, Bruno and Crofts) to come back. Surprised that Gus opted not to have a striker on the bench. This was Dobbie's big chance to shine and he failed the audition.
We can't even take the pee out of Palace after their win at Wolves. Didn't see those three wins coming.

Orlandi looked class, Bridge broadly exciting and quality again, Kuzcak the same with a game saving save. Where's the target man? Are we going the whole season again hoping no one up front gets injured then? It's an obvious that having goal scorers is pretty important surely!!

Gus Poyet reckons his side are suffering because of their reputation as a team of high-fliers.
He said: “Everyone in England thinks we are a top, top team in this division. So teams come with a plan. That’s what Birmingham did.
That’s what Ipswich did. They sneaked a goal and defended. They made you do all the effort.
“My players are down in the dressing room but I could not have asked for more. We need to get used to the way teams play against us.”
Ipswich boss Paul Jewell said: “Brighton are a fine side but we gave them a good game. We’ve taken a lot of flak but have shown in the last two games the spirit is there. All we need is the victory and we are on our way.”

Bridge was a different class again, but generally we showed how much we rely on CMS and Bruno. Without them we lack urgency and guile.

With Buckley you always have a chance of a goal. We really missed Bruno whose attacking play makes all the difference.
A lot of the time the players looked like they were playing with lead in their boots. We lacked pace. Dobbie has all the speed of his lookalike Garry Hart but I think he will come good. Barnes as a target man does not do it for me!
Lucky to get a point to be honest.

Only Buckley ever looked likely to score in the box. We really someone with presence in the oppo's penalty area: that target man striker we've all craved for over a year, now.

At least El-Abd was brilliant defensively making some great saving tackles, but we were lucky not to be 0-2 at half-time and 0-3 soon after with a fantastic save by Kuszczac from point blank. Ipswich never gave us time to play our passing game, hence the misplaced passes, and they looked dangerous everytime they went forward. They deserved all 3 points in my opinion.
However, Buckley was at last brought on for the out-of-form Lua-Lua, who not once get the better of the full-back. Buckley was by far the best forward we had and deserved his goal. He also sent over some lovely crosses from the byeline which were crying out for someone to head in.
A very disjointed performance, far worse than our stirring second half performance against Birmingham, but Ipswich played more fluidly and a point was the least they deserved.
The last 2 performances will have sent a strong message to Gus that the present squad is not nearly good enough for the Premiership. The return of CMS, Bruno and Vicente (and Crofts/Hoskins???) will make us a force once again, but the lack of cover up front is very worrying, and in my opinion a powerful target man is essential.

Vince wrote:Another excellent post that says it all - the only consolation is that Ipswich will upset a few of our rivals if they continue with that standard of performance.
I lost count of misplaced passes from several players - notably Bridcutt, Greer, El-Abd, Hammond, Dobbie. Even Bridge seemed lethargic in the first half, and moves involving Hammond invariably broke down, as he was not sharp enough with his passing, and kept getting caught in possession. Barnes was not at the races, and didn't have the skill to create anything, but Dobbie, although not playing well, had 4 or 5 fierce shots which did not quite hit the target. He will definitely get goals for us.

Agree with a lot of posts that Hammond has been off the pace last two games - far too many mis-placed passes from him and Greer particularly tonight which is completely counter to Gus's game. Dobbie definitely has the guile and technique to do well for us - seemed to tire badly towards the end.
And I really don't understand why Ashley bothers tackling anyone - he jumps out of every tackle that he attempts which either results in him falling over, getting hurt or getting booked. Having said that if he has to start then he is less of a risk playing upfront than anywhere else.
Overall - really not as bad as some are making out. Look at the stats - tonight and Saturday (shots and corner count way above the opposition) and if KLL had put away that gift of a chance in the first minute it could have been so different.
Keep the faith you lot. 3rd in the league with Bruno, CMS, Crofts and Vicente missing. My how our expectations have been raised that feel the need to gripe at that.

Hmm - all a bit too negative for me chaps. Some lovely one touch movement between Orlandi, Dobbie and Bridcutt throughout - and Dicker when he came on. Team is getting more comfortable with the passing game and learning to get the ball forward a bit quicker than last season. As that confidence grows amongst those players that have the skill to do it consistently it's starting to show the failings of some that are not so comfortable with it.

A quick word for Will Hoskins... don't rush to get match fit - there is currently no room even on the bench for real strikers unless, of course, they have double-barrelled names... Sorry if it sounds negative but it really is frustrating.

Oh dear, it's perhaps time that someone woke up and smelt the coffee, Gus. In reality we haven't progressed tactically from last season. Defensively we are sound enough. Three very good additions to the side have bolstered us and even on a bad day we look next to impenetrable. The central midfield doesn't look too bad with Bridcutt and either Hammond or preferably Crofts doing the box-to-box donkey work. The rest is up for grabs... IMHO, in the absence of CMS, both Barker and Agdestein should be given a starting slot. They play together in the DS and understand each other's game. Together they could prove to be the targetmen so badly needed and allow two others to play off them. I suppose that would be Buckley and Barnes or Dobbie. If things didn't work out - ie we weren't scoring then the bench should provide the possible alternative solutions. Looking at the bench last night the solution simply wasn't there. Why Ryan Harley continues to occupy a spot on the bench remains a total mystery. Starting with the two lads from the DS up front won't lose a game - the defense is too good for that - but it will surely provide the best opportunity in the current situation of winning it.

Not a good display, not a lot of passion.Very few efforts on target, need more zip in their play, and another goal scorer.
Yes it sounded like we needed Macca or someone with their shooting boots on, but I don't get all the doom and gloom after one defeat and one draw.
We will lose games this season, and we will play badly - that much is a given. But this knee-jerk reaction after every single match is a little OTT, in my opinion.

The passing tonight was awful, El Abd's passing was shocking and apart from the couple of good tackles he made he had a bad game.
Dean Hammond - Seen him play twice now and on both occasions he doesnt look up to it, passing again was awful and his general awarness was poor, he also looked slow when chasing back so i'm not sure he should be a regular starter.
Dobbie - Still unsure what Dobbie is, in my opinion he is not a striker and I have real concerns if the quality is there to play behind CMS.
Orlandi showed that he does have quality and if he can stay fit he will win us games, he also showed that he can deliver a good ball in to the box from a set piece and has that "vicente" swag about him.
One last thing, the last two games have showed how much we miss CMS and Bruno, Barnes doesnt have that instinct to get into the box (which is something you either have or dont) and although Calderon is decent cover he's nowhere near the standard of Bruno when defending and going forward - I still think Albion will be around the top 8 come the end of the season but feel another season in the Championship would give us more time to get a decent team ready for the premier League.

Strategically we have short comings and the opposition is quickly catching on.
