Emnes strikes to sink Albion

Frustration for Macca on his return today (photos Simon Dack) Frustration for Macca on his return today (photos Simon Dack)

Albion suffered more home frustration as they lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough today.

Marvin Emnes got the only goal in the 21st minute with a shot which deflected off Gordon Greer to wrongfoot keeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Albion had some good chances to level but Dean Hammond headed a David corner off target and Craig Mackail-Smith shot too close to Jason Steele, who tipped over.

Steele got down to his left to produce a reflex save from Ashley Barnes’ downward header after the break.

But Barnes should probably have left the keeper with no chance as he met Hammond’s pinpoint cross.

Will Buckley, Stephen Dobbie and Kazenga LuaLua were all sent on as subs in a bid to grab a goal.

But it was Boro who went closest in the final stages as sub Ishmael Miller poked a chance wide when clean through.

Well Well!!!! 69% of possession and 16 attempts on goal and only 4 on target--says it all. Maybe Gus will have some training on telling players how to HIT THE BL----y target!!!! Unbelievable. Getting quite frustrated now. Having got all these 'top class' players we cannot turn games into WINS!!!! Maybe get the young guy back from Oxford???

Another utterly utterly dismal performance by The Albion. Poyet and co havn't got a clue as I've been saying for over a year now. You might hate Palace but at least there playing exiting stuff and up there with a good shout for automatic promotion. The Albion are heading for automatic relegation without a doubt unless things change imediately starting with a new manager. Wake up and smell the coffee Albion fans before it's too late and stop all the silly excusses that I normally have to suffer on these pages.

I have to agree with ONLY some of what Hove says. Gus had a plan to play football but it is NOT working and he now needs a PLAN B. Teams come to the Amex, know how Albion play, get an early goal---however it may come---and then close us down for the rest of the match. However as per my above post, to have all those shots at goal and only have 4 on target is not a team expecting to get in, let alone stay, in the Premiership. All this talk about 'Dobbie will be so exciting etc' just does not wash, its results we want---something is begining to go wrong and we need things to change and quickly--talk is cheap, results is what it is all about.

Every team has a blip and this is ours. Palace will lose momentum, Albion will pick up the pace. Hoskins will be coming back in and will bang in the goals. Keep the faith and think with your head please Brighton fans.

It's early days yet. The team did all the right things, there were very few errors. They will come good.

No bus by Boro up until the last 15 minutes, so no excuses there.
Lot's of fight and no knock-out punch. Disappointed. Bit unlucky with their goal and some players not on their game. It really is a re run of last season and the same inherent problems in a system that has been employed by Gus with few variations for the best part of his reign. Yes we have better players (technically, can't fault the effort or commitment of the dearly departed). But since the departure of a certain forward, we have not looked capable of imposing ourselves in the box ( i am sure Gus can see this as well). The mystery is why it is taking so long to solve it.
We need more than endeavour and pretty triangles.
Also what's the opposite of a 'homer' with regards to the ref. That's two games where we've got nothing and a host of dubious decisions (not that it provides any excuses on this occasion).
Still not going to be too down. Rome or in this case Barcelona, was not built in a day.

It is a great pity that we can't start a match with the same intensity and drive that we finish with. We were so slow going forward that we allowed all the Boro players to get back behind the ball. Our passing was disgraceful in midfield and our shooting is pathetic. I think Gus may well want to consider his practice priorities. Where was Orlandi ?
We seem to pose no danger from set pieces at all.

My thoughts? Very frustrating.

I thought Boro were a tad fortunate.. they rode their luck at times in the second half. PLus got very lucky with the deflection for the goal. Referee..! does anyone know what half those freekicks to Boro were for ? One, second half, Hammond plays the ball forward, absolutely no contact with a Boro player, on the half way line... freekick to Boro? Really?
We huffed and puffed... first half passing was poor. Second half, we really should have scored two or three. Their keeper made key saves, between behaving like a toddler...
And its the same old story - for the third game in a row, weve watched a team take the lead after 20 plus minutes, then know that they can slooooow the game down in the second half, .... its getting a wee bit galling.

Not an awful performance. But lacking something - a bit of bite, a bit of luck - - one of those games where you think "its only a matter of time before we score" and then you realise that 90 minutes are up....

Yes... about the set pieces... I agree. What do we work on in training? The guy next to me, being more of an anorak than me, has counted how many corners weve had (at home) since we got a head or any sort of first contact on the ball ... its about 17 or so...

We are rubbish on corners, and that late freekick... what on earth?

We were joking that the Boro players were probably high fiving on getting it away for a corner, as theyd realise that we were so awful at them!

On a different note, does anyone know how to get live radio commentary when abroad?
I can get radio Sussex but at 3o/c they switch to Eastbourne or Hasting.
Very frustrating.

I agree with you but I'm not convinced by Hoskins. He's a great player, don't get me wrong, but he is permanently injured. No sooner is he back from one injury he picks up another. Think we should have taken Bournemouths £400k when they offered it for him. Ditto Vicente. Whats the point in having a great player if hes always injured? I too think this is a blip in our season and we will soon learn how to break down teams that come to defend. However, I think the board have been wrong not to back the manager and sign a real quality striker in pre season. We are one quality striker away from being a top top team. How about Daniel Sturridge on loan for the rest of the season? I'm sure Gus could persuade his good friend Roberto di Matteo.

I think Hoskins has been a tad unfortunate with his injuries. He was on fire throughout the pre season, he will almost be like a new signing if has a good run out.

You can't help but think if the reason we have not signed a striker has something to do with the boards confidence in GP or perhaps them wanting to see how he gets on with the tools he has or maybe I'm clutching at straws.

Come mid November the AMEX will be our fortress again.

Unlike Greer, I find it hard to take a positive out of yesterday's match. We started brightly but after they scored it was more of the same. I love the style of passing football but it is woefully slow - we need to attack at pace and maintain that level throughout the match.

Amex will never be a fortress if we do not intimidate the teams that come here and without an alternative plan we are going to struggle.

At the end of the day talk is cheap - results come from the pitch and on the performance of the last three home games even the playoffs look an unreasonable target.

I'm not advocating a return to the old "route one" style but when our attacks peter out in midfield for the lack of a target or a good ball into the box, the passing game just doesn't deliver.

We didn't. He chose (or his agent did) to refuse the offer made by the Albion. He's gone, now get over it! I wish we'd never sold Lawro, or Wardy, or BZ etc etc. Players come and go, what is important is that we compete and progress. For whatever reason, that is not quite happening at the moment, and none of us are able to say whether GM would make the difference either.

Excellent post Fairweather. Yes D'Urso was back to his worst after an ok performance vs Palace at The Amex last season.

The returning players have had a game now so hopefully we can step on vs Leicester tomorrow. Fancy a brace from CMS.

Very true....and D'Urso missed two stonewall pens for us.

We were unlucky today and deserved the draw at least but it is that bite upfront that isn't quite there get that's holding Gus back.

Now CMS has a start under his belt again I hope we (and he) can step on.

Was still strangely upbeat on the way back to London Saturday...a combo of a better performance (overall) coupled with a still respectable position in the table.
