Fogden's joy at Albion deal

Albion youngster Wes Fogden has hailed another contract offer as a "great achievement" after fighting back from a spine tumour which threatened his career.

Fogden was awarded a one-year pro deal last summer in recognition of his brave recovery from the tumour, which turned out to be benign.

Now, following a season of consolidation including two first team starts and two substitute appearances, the 20-year-old utility player has been handed another 12-month contract by manager Dean Wilkins.

Fogden said: "It's brilliant. I didn't think I would play again, so to have one of my best-ever seasons is a great achievement really.

"I haven't felt hardly any problems with my back, which is another major plus. It gives me another year to try and get a few more games than I did this season and push on again.

"I wasn't confident of getting a new contract but I'm happy with the season I've had. I thought I played well and worked my hardest, as I normally do.

"Hopefully, they won't want to send me out on loan next season and I'll be playing in the first team."

Fogden, who can play at rightback or in midfield, began the campaign on loan to Dorchester. He was also borrowed by Bognor before captaining the reserves to Monday's Sussex Senior Cup triumph.

Ten players have been released, including veteran defender Guy Butters and versatile Australian Paul Reid.

Fogden said: "We are all mates and it will be sad without them but that's the job I suppose. Butts always talked to me and gave me advice. Reidy was good to me as well. I am going to miss all of them, the younger ones as well."

What is it with some of you!!! The point is DW must see something in him otherwise he wouldn't have got another year.

Have to say, have seen both his starts and his two sub appearances and he looked way out of his depth, especially away at Cheltenham in the league.

excatly-he's RUBBISH just like brighton, so fits in quite well, thats why DW kept him on.

wes fogden got glowing reports from dorchester who wanted him to sign for them for the whole of last season, the bognor manager couldnt speak higher than what he did at his performances for them, motm three out of the five games he played, wilkins aftermatch interview on his debut at swansea was full of praise for him so i dont quite understand where liam and albionite are coming from.give the lad a chance after what hes been through hes done remarkably well

well said mick - i also heard that there were other clubs also interested in fogden -so who knows best - those involved in football management or some of the muppets that 'slag' every one and everything off - give the youngsters a chance, there's only one way to get experience and that's to play them ! Good luck to all the brighton youngsters that have been offerred a new contract - PROVE the doubters wrong!!!
