Adams: Returning to Albion was easy decision
Micky Adams
Micky Adams

Micky Adams has hailed his return as Albion manager as the easiest decision of his career.

The man who steered the Seagulls to the League Two title seven years ago and left them as promotion contenders in League One had no hesitation in returning when the call came from chairman Dick Knight.

"I thought it was a great honour when I got the job the first time but to be offered the chance to come back for a second time is fantastic," Adams said. "I always hoped I would come back at some stage and I cannot tell you how excited I am.

"I've had good days since I've been away and bad days . I look back at my days with Brighton with fantastic affection and sometimes think what did I leave for but you make decisions and move on. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong.

"I have been offered four jobs since I've been out of work but it was an easy decision to come back, probably the easiest one I've had to make in my career. It's a club I hold in great esteem and I cannot wait to get started."

Adams has been scouting part-time for Stoke since quitting Colchester as assistant manager in January after spells in charge at Coventry and Leicester. The father-of-two wanted Dean Wilkins as Academy coach at Coventry and he is hoping the man he is replacing as Albion boss accepts the club's offer of reverting back to first team coach.

"Part of my discussions with Dick was that Dean has done a fantastic job and anyone looking in from the outside would think that," Adams said.

"I am not privy to all that has gone on but what I do know is that Dean is a fantastic coach and I would like him to stay. I mean that sincerely."

Adams is ready for the task of trying to guide Albion back into the Championship in time for the club's move to their new stadium at Falmer in August 2010.

"Brighton managed to reach the Championship not so long ago and I laid the foundations for that," he said.

"I know the expectancy will rise now and I could have left it and not fanied it but that has never been me.

"The challenge is to get the club into the Championship in the next two years leading up to Falmer and it's a challenge I am going to take on board."

The rest of Albion's backroom staff remains unchanged under Adams' command. Knight said: "We are expanding the managerial team with a very experienced person at the top of it.

"The fact is we are not firing Dean - we are asking him to stay. This is a very considered decision and unanimous decision by the Board.

"We need to make this move now to ensure the club moves forward on the playing side at the same pace as it does off the pitch in terms of the stadium development. We think with Micky and Dean together that is a helluva management team."

What do you think about Adams return?

Fantastic news! It will be even better if Dean Wilkins swallows his pride which must be justifiably hurt at the moment and accepts the First team Coach appointment. I think that the charismatic Micky Adams will help to attract better players to the club, and I think we must now stand an excellent chance of not just making the play-offs but getting automatic promotion next year.

This is great news for everyone apart from Dean Wilkins!!!
I think we should all thank Dean for his efforts this season and I for one hope he stays in a position he will undoubtably will be more comfortable in.
Micky has given himself a big act to follow(his first spell here!!!) and his great strength as a manager was moulding a great side with players no-one else really wanted.
I for one cannot wait for next season even more now!!!
UP THE ALBION!!

We've got almost as many coaches as players now and probably more than the Brighton & Hove Bus Company!
Posted by: Simon, Crowborough on 12:37am Fri 9 May 08
Praise the Lord! This is the best news for years! I dont feel at all sorry for Wilkins as he has bored the pants off me for the last 2 seasons and is largely responsible for the drop in attendances. Adams is everything that Wilkins isn't..bold, positive and charismatic! I was dreading another season of diamond formations and lifeless post match interviews but now I cant wait for next season. Withdean will have bums on seats and rock again! Well done Dick..WELCOME BACK MICKEY!!

First signings Harty and Mayo?
Posted by: mark, brighton on 8:00am Fri 9 May 08
this offer to dean is something adams does not want, oatway will be involved, richards wanted to be second highest paid player here!! clever dean, get rid of your players so the one you want can hold you over the barrel. elphick to wolves , virgo in.
Posted by: John B on 8:03am Fri 9 May 08
This is fantastic news but i do feel very sorry for Dean and hope he stays but the club must come before any one man.
Posted by: mark, Kent on 8:19am Fri 9 May 08
Let me get my Party hat on, great news we have put a manager in place who has been sacked from every job since he left us and has not been a number 1 for nearly 2 years,GREAT what is DK going to do next move us back to Kent, Dick, LEAVE NOW YOU ARE TAKING THIS CLUB BACKWARDS...
Posted by: Seagull Tim, Haywards Heath on 8:22am Fri 9 May 08
Thanks Dean for all that you've done and this season has been a great improvement but this is great news for The Albion. Gates will improve dramatically and better players will be incouraged to come here. Adam Virgo coming back would be brilliant and what price Bobby Zamora coming back on loan at some stage? Stranger things have happened!
Posted by: ben, kent on 8:43am Fri 9 May 08
I think the nostalgia is taking over on this board - Zamora back?! Virgo better than Elphick? not so sure.

I hope Dean Wilkins stays on in a highly involved first team coaching role, adopting the format that many premiership teams now have - man u with Quiroz, spurs with Poyet/formerly Houston.

Lets still hope as well that we pursue the players we had here on loan last year, particularly Richards who was fantastic!
Posted by: Chris, Brighton on 8:48am Fri 9 May 08
I understand the decision that's been made, it was evident Wilkins is not the best man manager with the senior players and perhaps that has been his downfall.

Hopefully Micky can pick up from where he left off. My guess is that the board are ready to inject a huge amount of cash into the playing budget and want a manager who knows where and how to spend it.

My thought go out to the released players, its now a double blow to them as there is now a question mark over who wielded the axe.

New team to build, new shirts, new season, new manager - you can say a lot of things about the Albion but 'dull' is never a word you can use!
Posted by: Peteinblack, Between a rock and a hard place on 8:48am Fri 9 May 08
Very mixed feelings.

Micky Adams is a great guy, and I am excited by his return, but I really really feel sorry for Dean; he must feel totally shat on; no-one could have seen this coming, so I am not surprised Dean is 'in shock'.

Posted by: Gavin, Shepperton on 8:52am Fri 9 May 08
First signing Zamora more like! What are the odds on the pair of them leading us out at the first game at Falmer? Bobby would be ready to drop down a division by then.
I really hope Wilkins doesn't leave, he is as valuable to the club as Micky, but we need someone strong at the helm who can get the players fired up, and playing consistently.
Posted by: Cheshrie Seagull, Nantwich on 9:17am Fri 9 May 08
Oh good we are now as short termist as Man City. I am sure Micky jumped at the chance - there are not too many clubs near his Burgess Hill lover's home.

It worked so well last time we brought back an old manager in Mullery!

Why not just put Barry Lloyd as boss - he got us out first time...
Posted by: Ian, Brighton on 9:31am Fri 9 May 08
Great news! Who honestly saw that coming? People joked about him returning but I didn't think it for one second. Can't wait to see who he brings in during the summer break. I do agree that Zamora will have a loan spell with us, not next season though, the season after. Welcome back Mickey, let's get the season flying and back up to the Championship!!
Posted by: gully, hove on 9:42am Fri 9 May 08
Come on then all you pundits!
Questions for you - do you think any of the released players will get a second chance or do you think they are better off looking ahead?
What will happen to the other idiot DW?
Another big question, where does that leave Doug Loft - the bench or worse?
Interesting developments for all but I feel for Sonny Sam and Paul.
Your thoughts???
Posted by: Daz, Peacehaven on 9:52am Fri 9 May 08
New season, New shirts, New sponsor, New manager and 5 New players, with a New ground on the horizon....This club is going forwards not backwards as Micky will get us playing football again and not this kick and run tactics.

Also, all this talk about Zamora is very wishful, think we have more chance of signing transfer listed Freddy Eastwood!!

COME ON YOU SEAGULLS!!!!
Posted by: Andrew, Camberley on 9:52am Fri 9 May 08
How often does the appointment of a manager second time around work? Remember Mullery? Anyway, it's great to have Micky back but I feel Deano can and should feel more than a little hard done by as he had really pulled the rabbit out of the hat for us this season. Nonetheless, they ought to make a fantastic double act and DW will be all the better for the experience but how long before he gets poached by another club in need of a bright young prospect at the helm?
Posted by: kk, hove on 10:06am Fri 9 May 08
This is the good news ... prepare for the bad news that is coming ... Falmer postponed for the foreseeable future ....
Posted by: Ian, Brighton on 10:06am Fri 9 May 08
The other idiot DW will still be in a job come next season, and probably the next few after that. It's another "Kerry Mayo" case, like a loyal old dog you don't want to put him down for sentimental reasons. Doug Loft won't get played, probably loaned out for a bit of experience but I can't see him featuring at all. I would like to know who had the final say with releasing the players that went and how long Mickey has been on the cards for?!
Posted by: Scarfer1, Every Me Every You on 10:12am Fri 9 May 08
Somebody needs to inject a bit of reality into this discussion.

Its great to have him back BUT he hasn't exactly set the world alight since he has been gone. Lets not pile the pressure on too much and i'm sure in time he will get the team playing good football again.

As for bringing Zamora back - get your head out of the clouds!! We might see McPhee but . . .

At last some sort of effort from Silent Knight. I told you things were changing at the Albion. Dean Wilkins will leave, trust me. I have it on very good authority (same source) that Adams is behind some sort of consortium takeover bid for the Albion, from his own PLC called Scarfer Towers (or something like that). His only term was that he is installed as first team manager, Cork as assistant. Exciting times indeed, lets hope he injects some much needed cash !!!

welcome back micky sorry 2 c wilkins drop down but dont think he was strong enough hope wilkins accepts the offer and stays at brighton as he is a good coach it must be a smack in the teeth 4 him though micky will b the srtonger manager and if we had him last season we would proberly be in the playoffs it wil be interesing 2 see who micky brings 2 the club and who he lets go and is there n e money in the pot 4 players

OMG! The doom & gloom merchants are back, I see! Why are so many people only prepared to moan about BHA? Our club has been thru SO much c**p in the last 10 years its a wonder we still have a football team at all. I,m as surprised as anyone by Micky,s appointment and very sorry for DW (Although not a huge fan of his) but I cant see how he can stay now? DK, you now have your chance to prove all the whingers wrong. Lets hope it works out next season. The rumours about Falmer are worrying but, hey, as I said earlier we,ve been there, done that. Support the Albion & keep the faith! Come on you Seagulls.........

Get ready for some more surprises over the next couple of weeks, Wilkins won't stay and Oatway will be back and two ex Brighton players will be involved in a major investment in the club, there is a power struggle going on at the moment and this is the last throw of the dice for DK. Watch this space

Which would you choose? Stay at a club where the chairman pats you on the back but twists the knife a minute later, or take the pay-off for the 2 years left on your contract and move to a club that won't stitch you up?

I can't see Dean Wilkins staying because he's lost all his authority with the pros, especially in the light of Knight's comments.

Whatever you do next, Dick Dastardly, don't let Dean White anywhere near the first team. Or the reserves or youth team, come to that. How on Earth is White still here when we've got so many other staff but lost £2.8 million in just a year?!

Welcome back Mickey, Just the man to guide this club into the new stadium. Hope dean stays, he if an excellent coach if not manager. Chin up DW. With some good signings crowds will be up and exciting times ahead.

Do you know Chris, you could be right - it was DK wasn't it? DW bought Rents and Cobbs through the ranks would he have let them go? Both good prospects. Makes you wonder they could have had a great career with the Albion after all.

My thought go out to the released players, its now a double blow to them as there is now a question mark over who wielded the axe.

something tells me this has been decided ages ago! micky has been a pundit on the radio watching us for a while, i think he made the decision of players to release so as to release up funds for his team!
dean has done a great job and i hope we can keep him because i feel he was going in the right direction for the future!
fingers crossed for next season

I don't know why Jimmy Melia wasn't invited back. Under him the Albion were (briefly) in the top Division and reached the Cup Final. I understand that he is still coaching in Dallas, Texas.

It is correct - of course he could veto it over wages, but they are talking. My understanding is as left back.
Sullivan is defo although I may have misheard - it could be stockport or Scunthorpe. Again he may not go if he decides but they are defo in for him.
You will also notice that I said OGH could return on a short term and what do you know, Adams just intimated that the door might not be closed to the ones that were released.
Of all the stuff I know I sincerly hope Tommy stays. Great lad and great for the team, but the money being discussed is a lot. Adam would stay then and Virgo would be cover.
I hope the money is made available for Westy although I have no idea if they are after him.

I am gutted for Wilkins, obviously he had his down sides but the end result was 7th place. i doubted him for a while but he won me round. I do think it is ironic that so many posts on here are saying how unfair and disgraceful it is the way Wilkins has been treated. Yet a few weeks ago after a shocking result against Vale, people were abusing him, swearing at him and calling him everything under the sun except a great manager. fickle?
Great signing to move the club on, Wilkins please stay and continue your excellent work with the club where you belong.

Mickey Adams four job offers included
1/ MacDonalds
2/ Collecting deckchairs
3/ The Grand (washing up)
4/ A ventriloquists dummy
I think Dean is interested in the deckchairs position.
