Doug Loft is pleading for a run in the first team after securing his Albion future.

Loft believes he can show fans what he is really capable of if he is given more of a chance.

The 21-year-old former Hastings midfielder feared for his future despite being called up for his first League start of the season in the final game of the season at home to Swansea.

It was only his seventh start, to add to 24 substitute appearances, in two and a half years at the club.

However, Dean Wilkins handed him a new 12-month contract and, although Wilkins has now been replaced, Loft is determined to prove his worth under new manager Micky Adams.

He said: "I'm obviously delighted to be offered another year.

"I didn't really know what was going to happen but Dean Wilkins told me I have a lot of ability - he just told me to show it more regularly. He thinks I can play in the first team. So do I and other people who watch me all the time.

"It is the hardest thing ever when you are not given a chance. A lot of the players go through it but it's something the fans don't see, when you travel to a game and then you are not involved.

"I have come on in quite a few away games and feel as though I have done well when asked.

"If you get a run in the team then you become comfortable playing in a position and I could then make that position mine. When you are coming on, sometimes for five or ten minutes, it's a lot harder to make an impact.

"If I get a run in the team then I can express myself and be the player I want to be but it's getting that chance. I will keep on working as hard as I can until that happens."

i forecast the signature of loft could spell the end of wilkins, for wilkins to say to loft he had ability clearly showed the board dw has no idea what he is talking about. doug your be out on loan at lewes the best part of the season, and your the weakest link. goodbye

Lewes here we come. Loft has always been and will never ever be anything other than non-league quality!

I think we need to give him a chance. He has showed promising glimpeses, like the goal against Stoke... He just needs more games. Do we need to sign another central midfielder as Loft should be fine in the middle?

Better than Reid, anyday!

Loft wouldn't have been anywhere near the Lewes team last season! Maybe in a couple of years when they are back in the Ryman under Agent Keehan.

Dean White is making a sensational step up to become Albion manager.

He has agreed a three-year contract and will be unveiled by the club at a press conference today.

White takes over from Steve Coppell who has been offered the role of first-team coach.

Chairman Dick Knight said: "The board felt we need a manager with less experience to help the club make the great leap back into League Two.

"It's vital that we get back there as quickly as possible, before we get to our new stadium at Falmer, so that we can get promoted again under another manager or two."

Knight broke the news to Coppell last night.

"We very much want him to stay," the chairman said. "His strengths lie in coaching and the development of players.

"For obvious reasons Steve is in shock and we don't expect him to come up with an answer yet. He needs to think about it and we will do everything to persuade him to stay."

Knight stressed that all of Albion's 79 coaching staff would stay.

Micky Adams becomes assistant to the manager but is now in a superior position to Coppell and Dean Wilkins, who becomes assistant to the first-team coach, and Ian Chapman, assistant to the assistant coach.

Martin Hinshelwood is still something else and Barry Lloyd stays as chief scout.

We understand White will introduce a strict dietary regime for any remaining players.

They will be required to produce receipts and photographs from various fast-food outlets in the county, completing a weekly Burger Bingo card before being considered for selection alongside first-pick Doug Loft.

In fact an idea just struck me, with the realism of your post you could challenge Naylor to a write off and could yet become the new Albion Argus reporter.

Why such harsh comments about Doug Loft? He's twenty-one, and in an interview explains he feels an extended first-team run would help his career.

What's so wrong there? Showing a bit of ambition, hoping to do well, wants to be given a chance?

There are plenty of people more deserving of scorn, such as those habitual law-breakers who ask for not just a chance, but a second, third, fourth and many more chances.

It's a local rag interviewing a local footballer.

How has anyone here seen enough of him to form a valid opinion? You're only going to know for sure if he's rubbish if he's given a run in the team. If he STILL doesn't perform, then at least your opinion will be based on proper evidence, rather than the fact he's associated with Dean White (and I still don't know why so many people hate him either!)

why are some people on this website so cruel to brightons young players.i just cant understand where they come from at times.the youth at this club has been the lifeline of this football club for the last few years and to their credit have produced their fair share of good players.im not saying any of them are prolific but quite a few have servsd a purpose and still are.i think the treatment of loft on this site and nsc has been nothing short of disgraceful.any player needs a good run in a team to be judged.ive seen our best players have nightmare games and they play week in week out,you can only judge a player properly when he has had at least five consecutive starts i.m.o.so come on you lot give the lad a break.

I would certainly buy Richards but I'm not sure about Harding. They say you should never look back. As I seem to remember he wasn't that good a left-back anyway.

Well said Mick in Newhaven. If the lad has no confidence, then can you blame him with all of the stick he gets from so called fans. Some people seem determined to ruin his career (some idiot called bens garndad on nsc). How would you like it if someone publically slated you every cahnce they got and even demanded you lose your job. There are some nice people on nsc and that post on this website.....anyone in the club knows what loft can do. you cant be a bad player to have been offered 3 contracts. people who have actually seen loft play for more than 5 minutes say that he is one of the most technically gifted players at the club. i so hope he proves all his doubters wrong....

The difference is we are helping pay Loft's wages. If Loft is so good, how come he's hardly featured in the 26 months he's been here under 2 managers? As for his contracts, I think they have everything to do with Hastings buddy White who is no doubt delighted Loft is staying. Yet another reason why White should go.

Sally nice one.I think you will find he is one of Dougs many girlfriends.DK can't seem to win,he has done this for the best of the club so it can move forward.Micky adams is a very good manager, with many friends in the game.He once said he would smash my face in,and it made me like him even more as i could see how much he did really care about the Albion.

Grow up, it was neither funny or clever. Pretty stupid really and if you think it was one of the funniest posts on here ever, then that says a lot about the standard of contributions to these boards. As for Loft, people at the club think he is worth another year contract so that is it. Not one of you is in a position to jusdge better than the people that have offered him the contract. Just lay off of the lad and hopefully if he does get a decent chance, he will take it. You are all slagging him off from the safety of an anonymous message board on the basis of seeing him play a handful of times. Would you say the same things to his face? Why do you always have to be so negative?
