Murray strike seals the points

ALBION 1, OLDHAM 0

Try telling Glenn Murray that Withdean has little to recommend it.

Albion's new marksman already looks very much at home at the Seagulls' much derided abode.

Murray scored his fourth goal in four games at Withdean in the second half to secure three well deserved points and move Albion above Oldham in the chase to snatch a play-off place.

It is not just Murray who is enjoying Withdean at the moment. Albion have taken 14 points from a possible 18 in front of their own fans since losing to Nottingham Forest in December.

The crowd was below 5,000 for the fourth match in succession but much healthier turnouts are anticipated for the forthcoming visits of Leyton Orient and Gillingham.

Positive results in those will set the Seagulls up for nine matches in 29 days next month, most of them against teams at the top of the table.

Dean Wilkins made two changes to the team which came from behind to beat Cheltenham at Withdean on Tuesday.

He values the versatility of Adam El-Abd and the utility player returned from suspension not in central midfield, where he has been used recently, but in the centre of defence at the expense of Guy Butters.

Tommy Fraser replaced Kerry Mayo in the middle of the park, his first start since the eventful 1-1 draw at Oldham six weeks ago.

The visitors were unchanged following their 3-0 home victory against Yeovil last weekend.

Manager John Sheridan's options have been limited by a long injury list headed by Lee Hughes, their goalscorer in the feisty clash between the teams at Boundary Park last month.

Three of the previous four meetings between the teams finished all square and the statistical evidence pointed overwhelmingly to another low scoring affair.

Albion had other ideas and, if they had taken their chances, could have been in a commanding position inside the opening 20 minutes.

Nicky Forster had two good opportunities to end his drought, firstly when former Ipswich team-mate Dean Bowditch played him in behind the Oldham defence with an inch perfect pass.

Forster had only Mark Crossley to beat but Oldham's experienced keeper spread his sizeable frame to smother the shot for a corner.

The second opening for the Seagulls' skipper came from a Dean Cox cross, which he headed wastefully high and wide from the edge of the six yard box.

Crossley came to Oldham's rescue again when Steve Thomson found Murray inside the area. As he went down, asking for a penalty, Bowditch ran on to the loose ball to strike a low drive which Crossley pushed behind.

From the corner, taken by Cox, Andrew Whing headed down and narrowly wide and the Albion right-back also had another header from a Cox corner blocked on the line a few minutes later.

Oldham broke instantly to pose their first threat, top scorer Craig Davies holding off Fraser's challenge before firing over the bar.

It was a costly moment for the visitors in more ways than one, because Davies hurt himself in the process and the Welsh international eventually had to be replaced.

Albion were forced into a first half alteration themselves, Frenchman David Martot coming on for the injured Fraser in a straight swap in the centre of the park, a role unfamiliar to the loan signing from Le Havre during his stint with the Seagulls.

Albion had further attempts at breaking the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.

Bowditch dipped an ambitious effort narrowly wide from 30 yards and Murray headed straight to Crossley from a free-kick by Cox. Oldham would have been furious if that had gone in, as Murray clearly pushed his marker.

The visitors, impressive away from home for much of the season, have laboured on the road lately. They arrived without a win in their previous four away games and only one goal, a penalty.

The opportunity for the stricken Davies apart, they rarely threatened in the first half although Lewis Alessandro should have done better just before half time when he headed straight at Michel Kuipers at the end of a neat move.

It was a contrasting afternoon for the goalkeepers. While Kuipers had little to do, Crossley was always in the thick of the action.

Saves from shots by Cox and Forster early in the second half were routine for the much-travelled custodian but he almost embarrassed himself when he completely miskicked from a back pass.

Crossley's level of involvement reflected a perkier performance from Albion which was a considerable improvement on their display against Cheltenham.

Crossley could do nothing when they took a deserved lead in the 61st minute. Matt Richards was the provider with a surging run through the middle from inside his own half.

The on-loan Ipswich left-back released Murray and he rounded Crossley to find the empty net from an unkind angle.

It was another accomplished finish from last month's £300,000 buy from Rochdale to add to the two goals he scored on his full debut against Crewe and his equaliser against Cheltenham.

Murray's colleagues at the back defended vigilantly when they had to, notably when Tommy Elphick preserved the lead with a saving tackle on substitute Deane Smalley as the replacement for Davies threatened to convert Alessandro's cross.

While Murray continues to thrive in front of goal, his partner Forster has not scored since mid-December. He still received a generous ovation when he went off in the closing stages, due reward for his overall contribution during his barren run.

Were you at the game? What did you think of the performance? Are you optimistic Albion can mount a play-off challenge?

Brilliant result. Great performance from the lads. Of course Albion can make the play-offs if they play as well as they did today.
Come on then where's the old boo-boys what are you whingers going to complain about today?

If you look at yesterdays article on this website about McFaul you will see a post that a dimwit called "steve, BNT" put on there predicting Albion would lose 2 - 0 today. So come on Steve what you got to say today, no doubt nothing because you're just one of the losers who only come on here to slate the team

Absolutely fantastic result today. Great all round performance from the team. Keep it up cos Wembley here we come.
Can't help but notice how few comments there are on here so far. Is it perhaps because the team did well today and most people only like to come on here to moan when they play bad. Laughable really isn't it

The silence is deafening, where are all the whingers and beraters is it because they can't bring themselves to say anything positive about this club or are they embarrased at their lack of loyalty and support. suppose we better make the most of it , as soon as we have an off day they will be screaming for Dean Wilkins and Dick Knight to be hung drawn and quartered. New boys are settling in well and Murray is looking like a great investment. I think the play offs will be tough as the teams currently in those positions are so strong but I hope we push them all the way.

Myself and my 6 year old son went to our first Albion game today and had a great time. Well done to all of the team for beating Oldham and to everyone at Withdean for a great afternoon.

Great game and great goal by Murray but with enormous contribution from Richards. First 20 minutes played some excellent football. Only downside was Cox attempting to run the clock down with 15 mins to go and making a pigs ear of it. Don't disagree with the principle but not with 15 minutes to go when we are in a good position. Also, need to learn to draw the foul or corner rather then the other way round. Still, bring on the Orient.

Id like to say well done to brighton for getting their season back on track. I was born in chelsea and am a chelsea fan yet live in brighton due to work. BHA is a great little club and i supported them all the way in their falmer bid and hope to see them do well, always checking for their results. One thing that does bemuse me a liittle bit is the apparent lack of any action/movement on the actual stadium, can anyone explain whats going on?

Great first half - huge improvement on Tuesday. Murray looks class on the ball (great goal)and Elphick was massive.
One moan - why on earth, with still 15 mins plus additional time remaining, and players waiting for a cross does Cox play by the flag and concede posesssion time and time and time again? If he was good at it I might accept it - but he isn't. Its negative.
1-0? Should have been 4-0. Seeaaggulllssss!

A good result and Murray is turning out to be a very good player in the making.

Elphick has to be player of the season for the way he has come in and held down a regular first team place this season ahead of Lynch and Butters. Lynch and Robinson can count themselves somewhat unlucky not to start this match after impressive sub apparences against Cheltenham.

I was surprised to not see Butters in the 16 and would have had him there instead of Mayo. If Dixon is fit for the next match I would name him on the subs bench instead of Hart.

One grumble which is strikers are judged on their goals and so would like to see Forster and Bowditch contribute more.

But a good result and at last we seem to be moving in the right direction again.

What a great result! I really feel as if we can mount a play off challenge, was much more of a buzz around the withdean lets hope it remains. With regard to cox and robinson's time wasting tactics, Wilkins actually apologised on air and i got the impression it was him whom instructed. No wonder they had to win with adecent display today , they were protecting it, but it is neither here nor there we won and that's the main thing. UP THE ALBION!

Interested but pleased to hear that Wilkins apologised for the time wasting. We were better than that in this game and better set to go for a second. All forgiven though - bring on Orient.

I think its a disgrace that Andy Naylor has described Forster applause as "generous".Easily our most all-round player, Even so he hasn't scored for a while he has manny assist and runs far more than anyone else.

Just got back from todays game, what a cracker worth every one of the 656 round trip miles hopefully if some of us can do that the local fans can get behind the club on a regular basis, instead of moaning about shortcomings. We have what we have and be thankful it is still a football club.Unfortunatley my next game will be Carlilse a localish one.

Been a long day today and as one of the first to complain about Tuesday I am one of the first to say I eat my hat as that was a different performance today and well done as that is what we are capable of and particularly early on some of the football was top notch. Maybe it was missing El abd as I have never rated him, particularly but the team seemed to gel a lot better and I know there are particular individuals on this board that when the team win they put two fingers up at the moaners and then when the team loses the role is reversed. All I can say and have said it in a previous posting is that at the end of the day we all want wants best for this club and it was not necessarily moaning the other day but frustration in having sat watching poor football.

Anyhow less to that as today I was pleasantly surprised and all I can say is that my faith has been partly restored and lets just hope that this form can continue.

My big concern is still like many here on the turnout and I would personally like to see a voucher scheme in operation based on every game you go to you get a voucher with your address on that can be redeemed when tickets for Falmer become available the supportewrs with the most vouchers have first refusal. In other words those supporters that go to any game they can whether home or away and including the johnstons paint trophey and who support the team through thick and thin will have the chance to get the best seats, as no doubt although I admit I wear my heart on the sleave for this club as been in my blood for over 30 years it should be those supporters that accumulate viewing the most matches during these harder times that should be rewarded for that loyalty.

Good evening and again Wilkins whatever you did to your players since the dire performance on Tuesday could you please do more of the same for the next match too:)

Cheers

Thanks for that Comment wombat are whatever you are lol

Also BTB yes if you can get down I believe that on Tuesday there is a presentation on the building of the stadium at The Hove Town Hall which will be fantastic to see how the ground will be developed.

I believe the reason for the delay is that it is not just the big fight to get planning permission but once that has been granted the contracts have to be tendered and especially as Government funding is also involved this can be quite tiresome. Also the materials to be used are to be agreed upon.

However two points which will make this ground unique is that the ground is to be self sufficient in that it should have all the latest technology for creating the necessary power and also whilst the stadium is being built there are going to be webcams so fans can see the progress of the stadium live which is a unique feature of the development.

Anyhow Lets just hope that when the ground is built we shall be playing Chelsea very soon in the Premiership:)

Cheers

Ron, you refer to delay as if the scheme is behind schedule. I always understood that it would always have been abuot 12 months after permission granted before any spade hit the ground anyway. With regard to webcams, hardly unique bearing in mind there were 4 covering the building of Wembley!!! Where do you get your info from???

What is your problem. If a local player is recommended to BL then he would be a fool not to see him play. Just because he was at one of your games doesn't mean the Albion are going to sign your team mate. What if there was a player in non-league who BL didn't go and see and was then snapped up by another league club and became successful. No doubt then you would be equally critical of the Albion. I very much suspect BL sees hundreds of players that turn out to be no hopers and it is never taken any further. Instead of trying to stir up trouble why don't you comment on the actual game yesterday.
