Albion brush aside nine-man Gills
 |
| Nicky Forster is mobbed after scoring Albion's first goal from the penalty spot |
Albion 4, Gillingham 2.
Albion made it five games unbeaten as they brushed aside Gillingham at Withdean Stadium.
The turning point of the match came on 20 minutes when visiting defender Garry Richards was shown a straight red card with Albion trailing 1-0 at the time.
Nicky Forster equalised almost immediately and further goals followed before half-time from Adam El-Abd and Tommy Elphick.
Substitute Jake Robinson added the fourth in the second half before Andrew Crofts scored his second of the game for Gillingham.
The visitors also had Sean Clohessy sent off in the closing stages to leave them with nine men.
Albion made two changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Ian Westlake, signed on loan from Leeds, was handed his debut and David Martot also returned with the injured Steven Thomson and Dean Cox the two players dropping out.
If Cox's absence from proceedings was a surprise so too was a fourth minute lead for Gillingham, especially as they had managed just one goal from open play in the previous six games.
Adam Miller fed captain Andrew Crofts and the Wales international midfielder controlled and swivelled in one movement to beat Michel Kuipers with a spectacular volley from 30 yards.
Perhaps Crofts could have been closed down quicker and it would be easy to criticise Kuipers for being beaten from such a distance but sometimes you just have to admire the quality of the strike and this was one of those instances.
It was a stunning setback for the Seagulls from which they struggled to recover until referee Mike Thorpe issued a controversial straight red card to Garry Richards 20 minutes into the contest for a foul on Martot midway inside the Gillingham half.
Replays may show otherwise but it did not look like the sort of tackle demanding such drastic punishment . As if losing the imposing Richards from the heart of their five-man defence was not galling enough for the visitors, Albion rubbed salt into the wound by equalising from a penalty awarded from the resulting free-kick.
Thorpe's sharp-eyed assistant spotted a push on Glenn Murray and Nicky Forster duly despatched his second spot-kick in as many games following his last-gasp equaliser against Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Albion should have capitalised further on their numerical advantage in the 29th minute. Forster, playing against his old club, crossed to the unmarked Murray, who headed wastefully wide from the edge of the six yard box.
The Seagulls were the ones feeling aggrieved ten minutes later, Thorpe disallowing Andrew Whing's header from Tommy Fraser's corner for a push.
Their frustration turned to jubilation with two more goals in the final two minutes of the first half, both of them scored by the centre halves from set- pieces.
The Seagulls had made a mess of two earlier free-kicks from shooting positions but they made amends when Forster was brought down inside the semi-circle.
Matt Richards' curling effort over the Gillingham wall was pushed on to the upright by keeper Derek Stillie and Adam El-Abd pounced on the loose ball to rifle in an angled drive.
A half which had begun so well for Gillingham finished with them further adrift and in considerable disarray.
The marking was non-existent once more as Tommy Elphick firmly headed in Fraser's corner.
It was a nightmare return to Withdean for former Albion captain Danny Cullip.
The popular centre half helped Gillingham to clean sheets on his first two appearances but his involvement ended at the interval, Barry Fuller taking his place for the second half.
Cullip received a warm ovation before the game from a disappointing crowd of less than 7,000, which was much lower than expected.
The match was sold out when it was frozen off in December, fans snapping up discounted tickets.
Many of them stayed at home to watch the Champions League and missed out on all the fun.
The second half was always liable to be something of an anti-climax after such a hectic and incident-crammed opening 45 minutes.
Miller hit the bar for Gillingham in the 56th minute with a curving free-kick from 20 yards.
Albion might have become anxious if that had gone in but it was destined to be a night when pretty much everything went right for them after such an alarming start.
Jake Robinson was introduced for Dean Bowditch in the 64th minute and, within four minutes, the substitute increased the lead from yet another set-piece.
Whing had a shot saved by Stillie from Fraser's corner and Robinson rifled in the rebound.
Albion became a little sloppy after that. Gillingham to their credit, kept going and were rewarded with a second goal for Crofts 14 minutes from time.
He drove into the roof of the net from ten yards when Kuipers made a complete hash of trying to punch clear Miller's corner.
The visitors' miserable evening was further compounded by a second red card, this time for Sean Clohessy.
He had already been booked for a foul on Forster when he kicked the ball away after Albion were awarded a free-kick.
He could have no complaints, unlike perhaps Richards, whose premature departure changed the game.
Albion (4-4-2): Michel Kuipers; Andrew Whing, Tommy Elphick, Adam El-Abd, Matt Richards; Dean Bowditch, Tommy Fraser, David Martot, Ian Westlake; Nicky Forster, Glenn Murray. Subs: Jake Robinson for Bowditch (withdrawn, 64), Kerry Mayo for Westlake (withdrawn 90), Joel Lynch, Gary Hart, Jonny Dixon.
Yellow cards: Westlake (31, foul), Fraser (62, unsporting behaviour)..
Scorers: Forster (22), penalty, El-Abd (43), Elphick (45), Robinson (68).
Gillingham (5-2-1-2): Derek Stillie; Sean Clohessy, Garry Richards, Danny Cullip, Simon King, John Nutter; Stuart Lewis, Andrew Crofts; Adam Miller; Delroy Facey, Leroy Griffiths. Subs: Barry Fuller for Cullip (withdrawn, 46), Gary Mulligan for Lewis (withdrawn, 58), Simeon Jackson for Griffiths (withdrawn, 69), Chris Kelly, Dennis Oli.
Yellow cards: Griffiths (39, hand ball), Stillie (45, dissent), Miller (43, dissent).
Red cards: Richards (20, serious foul play), Clohessy (71, foul and (82, kicking ball away).
Scorers: Crofts (4 and 76).
What did you think of Albion's performance? How realistic is a play-off challenge?.

A superb result and we are starting to build some real momentum. With Cox and Thomson to return hopefully for Hart and Mayo the side is starting to look pretty solid.
It was really pleasing to see three homegrown players score tonight.

Cheer up everyone. We are only four points off last year's tally at the end of the season and there are still 13 games to go. Surely that represents an improvement? Well done Albion.

A strange game. We were very poor for 20 minutes at the start of each half but scored 4 and missed 4 sitters. Kuipers was at fault for both goals, although I would love to see us try to sign Andrew Crofts - particularly if Gillingham go down.
It was good to see Robinson score again. He is far more effective than Bowditch who hasn't contributed much yet - and Jake is our player.
The crowd was 6,800, despite being announced as a "full house". There were maybe 500 empty seats in the Gillingham end and a few empty ones dotted around, but they must have added up to quite a few. It looked nearer 7,800 than 6,800 - quite deceptive.
3 points are 3 points but we will have to improve to get any points from the next 3 games. Can't imagine that Carlisle, Walsall and Doncaster will be too worried.

Why do we have so many moaners on this site.Andy Naylor rubbishes the crowd by describing it as 'disappointing, less than 7000' instead of the positive option of 'a bumper crowd of nearly 7000' so perhaps it's little wonder. Meanwhile, I saw 5 decent goals, a goalkeeping howler for the sixth,a 4-2 win by my home town side,2 sending offs, 2 goals dissallowed (albeit 1 for our penalty instead) & a cracking game by Adam El-Abd plus debut by a new player. Why not cup half full sometimes guys.

The crowd was not so disappointing in that it was cold school night and it was never going to have people swinging from the rafters (what rafters?).
Not great football, but entertaining none the less and another 3 points in the bag for Brighton.

I'm with James, it was a cracking match from where I was standing (or rather, sitting). Freezing cold rain but worth it.
As for Steve, he doesn't even appear to be able to spell the word "Brighton", so I hardly think he's able to judge the match.

Was at the game last night and very impressed with the defence of Whing, Elphick, El-Abd and Richards. They were involved in both penalty areas and El-Abd and Elphick could have had another goal each, Richards hit the bar and Whing nearly scored. That is not bad for a back four. they also looked very solid at the back and seem to be comfortable as a unit. My only concern was that Murray should have got a goal, for whatever reason he looked short on confidence. Good to see Jake come on for Bowditch now lets see him start.

T.Ruth do you think Wilkins is the new messiah and that a miracle is going to happen at the Withdean (is Dean Cox the new Judas) It seems to me that we have made some astute signings this season; Thompson,Richards Forster, Whing, Murray and now Westlake has come in and made an impact. I think we stand an outside chance however if we can build in pre-season we should progress nicely and be in a much stronger position. the days of Wilkins youth team are beginning to fade but it has generated much needed revenue and contributed to the survival of our club so long may the youth system continue. Amen

I went to the game last night and, not being a regular to Withdean, I was surprised at what I saw. Not the performance of the team, which wasn't bad. Some of the play was encouraging for a young team, with a lot of new players. What surprised me was the constant moaning and whinging of 'regular' fans! Throughout the match, it was negative comments and getting on players backs, despite being 4-2 up. When Murray was holding the ball up well, with close attention from the centre-half, people were screaming at him to turn and go, when surely holding the ball up and retaining possession was the right thing to do.
Albion fans are famous for sticking with their club through difficult times, but on last night's showing, the whole experience left me leaving on a negative note.

Problem is Terry, that a lot of Brighton fans have become too militant and now don't have a common enemy so now they turn on the club. There are a lot of Brighton fans who live in the real world who appreciate the achievement of the club in surviving and thriving, if a club was ever destined to go into administration its this one. So don't let the whingers and moaners have it all their own way. Up the Albion

Went last night and it was a solid performance. Scored 4 goals at home, 3 points and a game with chances either end. At the end of the day its a results business and yes we may not be playing the best football but we are grinding out results. Let the moaners moan as they obviously arent living in the real world and know nothing about football ! Seagulls !

Was a bit disappointed that at 4-1 up against 10 men we still had 11 men back at set pieces. Having said that the minute we put somebody up (to cheers from the crowd) Gillingham scored !!! Still good entertainment & 3pts. SEAGULLS

I enjoyed the game last night, not so much for the great football but there was plenty of incident and excitement. The strong swirling wind didnt help plus the forced change around in midfield again and conceding that goal so early. The sending off of course made the difference but you get these breaks sometimes..it was definately our night! My main moan is that I cant see that Bowditch does enough to justify keeping Robinson on the bench.I'm all for improving the side but he doesnt seem any better than what we have already which means we are wasting money on his wages.Jake upped the tempo the minute he came on and we always seem more lively in attack when he plays in spite of the end product being sometimes disappointing. Westlake looked promising tho as I think Coxey's cut backs on to his right foot have become a bit predictable, altho we missed his delivery from set pieces. Murray looks class but had another of those days in front of goal.If we are to make the play-offs we now need to find some away form fast as there are now only 5 home matches left out of 13

Whilst another three points are useful lets not get carried away,Gillingham have a poor away record, add the fact they had a man sent off before half time hardly makes us play off material.I want them to regain a Championship league position so that I can attend matches again,I had more than enough of the dire Div 1 fare.
