Albion boss Micky Adams is poised to sign Chris Birchall for the second time in three years – if he impresses in training this week.

The Trinidad and Tobago international midfielder began a week’s trial with the Seagulls yesterday after leaving Coventry and snubbing Carlisle.

Adams bought Birchall from Port Vale for £325,000 in August 2006 when he was Coventry manager.

The 24-year-old is now a free agent and Adams said: “I know what he is capable of. He is a hard-working midfielder who can play wide or centrally.

“He hasn’t played for Coventry this season and we are having a look at him to see if we fancy him and he fancies us.”

Birchall quit Carlisle last week after two substitute appearances during a month’s loan.

The Cumbrians expected to tie up a permanent deal after agreeing with Coventry to take over his contract for the rest of the season but Birchall told them he has received a lucrative offer from San Jose Earthquakes.

He is now weighting up a choice between Albion and moving to the States.

“It’s a massive decision for me to make as far as my career goes and it's one which I'll have to think very carefully about,” Birchall said.

“I'm in a far better position now than I was at Coventry because both these new offers can be beneficial for me but I’ve got to take a good look along with my agent and see which is the better one.

"”The fact that going to the US will mean I’m closer to Trinidad is definitely something that I will think about and fitness wise I’m not worried because I will definitely be active in England before the MLS season starts.

“But my old manager Micky Adams wants me and if I do well enough then there’s the possibility of them putting a decent deal on the table.”

Adams took Stafford-born Birchall to Coventry after he became the first white player to represent Trinidad and Tobago in 60 years and featured for them in the 2006 World Cup.

He qualifies to play for them because his mother was born in Port of Spain.

Birchall trained indoors with the rest of the Albion squad yesterday, as the pitches at Falmer were frozen.

He could have a run-out in the reserves in tonight's Sussex Senior Cup quarter-final at Horsham YMCA (7.45), although Albion have delayed naming a team in the expectation that the match will be frozen off.

What do you think? Should Albion sign Birchall?

well adams paid to much for him two years ago, 325k.. but if he is better than what we have , and will improve the side? then great.. however his interview would suggest its more about cash and being closer to trinidad, but who knows, with fraser going soon we will need cover.

If its a decent deal he's after then this is a non-starter. Ask Bas Savage... he was offered a tank of petrol as a pay rise!

Does Adams ever sign players who he's not managed or coached before?

After only two sub appearances in his loan spell at Carlisle,we have to ask the question......
Does he know the way to San Jose?

Well it looks like Adams is trying to sign players but Knight will have the last word not good.

It does seem that Adams does only sign players that he has managed or coached before, and he has hardly been the most succesful manager or coach, and the only other method he has is to sign players Barry Lloyd has found, errrrrmmmmmmm look at what he has found, utter garbage except one!!!

Never rated Barry Lloyd, was a favoured son before and looks as though he still enjoys that protected status, a sort of Prince Edward role, no one knows quite what is is doing, and it is unclear to the public as to whether he has achieved anything.

Oh so negative you go on about bringing in new faces but still you moan and put the player down. Yes only two subs apperances but Carlisle wanted to sign him so they must have seen some quality in him and they are in a better position than we are. Also he may not have wanted to play in Carlisle, I think he wants to play in the UK otherwise he would not look at us and just go to America. I hope he does well and we sign him we need a couple of good midfielders and he could be one of them. Instead of putting the team players and the club down all the time why dont you get behind them and cheer them on instead of constantly spouting the same stuff day in day out.

Adams paid way over the odds for Birchall once before don't make the same mistake twice Mickey!

Richards apparently wants to stay - well the answer is simple don't be so greedy!

Give him a chance.I doubt Adams had a say in how much was paid for him before & I doubt if any of the negative posters has seen him play.At least let him him play a game for us before criticising him, Adams, Knight & probably Kerry Mayo!!

It is about time this club woke up and smelled the roses, at the moment we are in the lowest quarter of the English third division, our wage bill needs to reflect this we cannot pay or sustain demands for Championship levels when every time the team runs out more fans are doing the same because of the dire management and play they are subject to week in week out.
Now realy is the time to start building and signing loan players on costly permanant contracts when there performance or lack of it is the reason we are all in this position will not benifit us one iota. I did think Christmas would help us however now i am pinning my hopes on February to see us clear
