Help The Argus pay tribute to Dick Knight

Albion are entering a new era after a change at the top.

Now The Argus is giving you a unique chance to pay your own public tribute in print to Dick Knight, who stepped down as chairman recently.

Knight will be remembered as the man who guided the Seagulls from the brink of oblivion in 1997 and through challenging years at Gillingham and Withdean, winning two titles and a play-off final along the way.

Send us your appreciation of his time as Albion chairman (no more than 50 words, please) to be included in our new season supplement, on sale on Saturday, August 8 when the campaign kicks off at home to Walsall.

Our new season special is always hugely popular with Seagulls fans and this year should be no exception with hopes high for the 2009/10 campaign.

To be part of it, we need your tributes by Wednesday, August 5. Send them to Sports Desk, Argus House, Crowhurst Road, Hollingbury, Brighton, BN1 8AR, email us at sports@theargus.co.uk, or leave a comment below (only those posted with users' real names will be used).

Hi, Got to say he is and will remain I am sure 110% an Albion man, he loves the club and gave it an awfull lot in good times and bad. To ask for a tribute I beleive at this time is wrong, it will of course bring very good comments on what he did and did not do for the club but the Argus is as usual just looking for a story. We should be reading what the club and new chairman are going to do in the comeing season and not re-live history at this time and while on the subject when is the Argus going to look forward and take of the Great escape banner and replace it with something to get the fans going for the next season. We had a clear out at the club maybe the Argus should have a look at it's back room staff!!!

Without Dick Knight's intervention, the club would have ceased to exist in 1997.

Dick Knight WAS Brighton and Hove Albion from that time until recently. Because of tireless energy and resolve over the years the club now enters an exciting new era of hope and with a position of strength.
Not all his actions were totally well received by the fanbase; however, it cannot be argued that his desire and committment mean that this fanbase still have a team to support .... and one with a very bright future.

Thank you Dick Knight.

I have supported The Albion since 1961, I have seen the Highs, I have seen the Lows, and the Very Lows which of course was the Archer era, when Dick came to take over the club he was a true "Knight" in shining armour. It means so much when you have a Chairman who not only has money but loves the club at heart, Dick loves Albion we love Dick, now we have another true Albion fan following on very best wishes to you Dick and to you Tony for the future of the "Super Seagulls. Brighton Bill Baildon West Yorkshire

You may love 'Dick', but I do not.
He undoubtedly loved Albion but he was autocratic and egotistical.
He kept the club alive when it was on the brink but even Harold Shipman saved a few lives, it doesn't make him a saint.
I am glad he is no longer Chairman.

Knight has done an amazing job. He's successfully balanced the job of keeping Brighton the football team and Brighton the business operation afloat. Given the constant short-term decisions that had to be made, it is miraculous. Anyone who remembers the sheer desperation of May 3 1997 will be eternally grateful to Dick Knight for intervening and saving our club.

baldseagull that was hilarious. Given the choice between a chairman who's autocratic and egotistical and Bill Archer......ooh let's see. Whatever his management style was, he saved this club and now when the stadium was in danger and someone else had the money he's stood aside. He made mistakes and he had an ego but what he's done for this club far outweighs that.

Glad to have amused you.
If you compare Knight with Archer then he is bound to look good.
The Taliban were welcomed when they kicked the Russians out of Afghanistan.

My point is that Dick Knight came to see it as HIS club, his personal relationships with people were more important than their professional ability.
We've just got shot of him and people are talking about creating permanent reminders of him.

I doubt he stepped aside anymore than Mark Mcghee or Mickey Adams left by mutual consent.

Nonetheless baldy, this thread is not the place for your comment.
Do check and you will spot the words 'tribute' and 'appreciate'.
He saved the club and for that will forever have my gratitude.

I just wish it to be known that he is not universally loved by all Albion fans, I will need a few years before I will be able to see past all the bad and just see the good.
The bitter taste of the manner of Dean Wilkins removal is in my mouth still.
When any Albion supporter says 'we' love him, I will speak to exclude myself from that 'we'.

Mickey Adams was great for the Albion 10 years ago, why not ask for tributes to him.

Glad to see the back of him and so are the board. I've said all along he was a limp dick f*****d off a lot of good managers and now some prik is sugesting a statue of him outside Falmer, sod off he is never worthy of that.

Dick Knight is as much a legend as Mike Bamber. A true fan who gave us hope when we had no right to have it. We would have no club now but for Dick. Just look how many clubs have failed since the Goldstone and realise what he has achieved with minimal income and crowds. I would name a stand AND put up a statue.

The expression. 'Cometh the hour, cometh the man' comes to mind. 1997 etc was the hour we needed Dick (can't we say Richard?) and now another hour in another age we need Tony. Each epoch has its heroes and D.K., whatever you perceive his later omissions or faults may be, was one. Let's hope we can say the same of T.B. in a few years.

It's rare to have agreement from all stakeholders about the methods of a strong leader. I'm pretty sure that Winston Churchill rubbed a few people up the wrong way, but I doubt the fact that he was egotistical is at the forefront of ones thoughts when you mention his name. (I'm making a point not comparing DK to WC).

Brian Clough was a conceited and arrogant man. But noone can deny his goal to game ratio and his two league championships and european cups.

Dick saved the Albion, if it wasn;t for him, gawd knows where we'd be right now, yes he's made some mistakes along the way, none more so than last years events, but we're still going strong and the time was deffo right to make way for Mr Bloom, but Dick has served us well and will always be remembered for what he done.

To be honest there were so many highs and lows in Dick Knights era,
Yes he will always be remembered for saving the Albion and keeping us in league football and for that i thank him,
But.... for me it all went wrong fighting for survival in championship seasons and there after,
and as for Falmer Dick Knight was not a one man team, so any suggestions of a statue is daft,
but again thank him for moving over so now the club can now move forward.

Great idea, he could be depicted holding a large knife, raised above his head and stood behind a statue of Dean Wilkins, or maybe one of Mark McGhee.

Perhaps the plinth could bear the words "HE LEFT BY MUTUAL CONSENT"

Well said, that man. DK stepped into the firing line when BHA looked dead & half buried. It really bugs me when idiots slag him off in an article designed to appreciate what he has done for the Albion. Yes, we all had our moans about him over the years but lets pay the man some respect now. He deserves it. Thank you Dick for your work and as Claude Back says "Let's hope we can say the same of T.B. in a few years."
