Bloom weighs up his options

Albion are torn between big names and contenders with proven records in the lower divisions after Steve Coppell ruled himself out of the running for the manager’s job.

The Argus understands at least one high profile former player has expressed an interest.

But a head-turning appointment could be a gamble and chairman Tony Bloom may plump for a more solid candidate.

Jim Gannon, Colin Calderwood, Nigel Adkins, Gus Poyet and Steve Tilson are among the names under consideration.

The Argus website exclusively revealed yesterday afternoon that No. 1 target Coppell is holding fire for a Premier League or Championship job, which will be his last in management.

That opportunity could come as early as next week, with Phil Brown one game from the sack at Hull.

Albion chairman Tony Bloom said: “Steve was one of the first names to spring to mind, and would have been a leading candidate for the job, but on initial contact he ruled himself out.

“He is enjoying his time out of the game, after leaving Reading last summer, and I think only a very high profile job could tempt him back into football at this time.

“We have had a high number of quality applicants and have now refined the shortlist and will continue with the process of evaluating and interviewing the leading contenders.”

Gannon was the first choice of former chairman Dick Knight before Russell Slade was appointed but he turned Albion down and moved to Motherwell from Stockport instead.

Gannon has continued to impress north of the border, where he has just been named manager of the month.

Calderwood, currently assistant manager at Newcastle, guided Northampton to promotion from League Two and Nottingham Forest from League One.

That makes him appealing to Bloom, as the chairman wants Albion in the Championship for the move to Falmer in August 2011.

Adkins is highly regarded by the Albion Board for the same reason, having steered Scunthorpe to promotion to the Championship twice in the past three seasons with former Seagull Andy Crosby as his assistant.

Uruguyan Poyet worked with Dennis Wise at Swindon and Leeds and at Spurs under Juande Ramos, while Tilson led cash-strapped Southend to the League One title in 2005-06 and into the play-offs two seasons later following relegation.

They are all regarded as more realistic targets for Albion than the likes of Alan Curbishley and Gareth Southgate, who, it is feared, would adopt the same stance as Coppell.

Other contenders include Steve Cotterill, Iain Dowie, Brentford's Andy Scott, ex-Gillingham chief Andy Hessenthaler, Exeter boss Paul Tisdale and Tony Adams.

Lots of names but in todays climate that is to be expected, lots of wanna bees and dead wood out there so TB needs to be and sure will be very carefull as he decides.
At the end of the day I don't care what his name is (Sant Clause if you want) just as long as he can get these players playing to there best and take us as a team forward & not a repeat of last season PLEASE

The idea of Adkins and Crosby appeals. They've done a great job wirh Scunny and could hopefully instill some defensive discipline using Crosby's vast experience. Tilson would be welcome too, maybe he'd bring Lee Barnard with him! Not a fan of Calderwood though... Yes, he got Forest promoted, but he had stacks of cash and it took him years.

I'd certainly like to see Lee Barnard here as a long-term replacement for Forster. Scored an absolute shed-load in the reserves at Tottenhan and was a long while before they let him go. Would personally go for Gannon despite him turning us down though not sure we're a better option than where he is at the moment. Please please please though, not Tony Adams.

I work with a Forest fan and he was never liked by them, took 3yrs to get them out of league one with probably the strongest squads in the league. Adkins is proven at this level and whole Scott At Brentford is an interesting option.

I'm with you big fan, reading through those names they are the 2 I'd pick. Adkins being the top pick.

Will people put the Jim Gannon thing to bed??

He didn't come 6 months ago when he was manager of cash strapped Stockport and now he's manager of the month at SPL Motherwell.

Dream on.

Like the idea of Adkins, but I can't see him dropping down a division.

No way Gannon will come either.

Calderwood really struggled to get Forrest out of League 1.

No of the others mentioned in the article excite Tilson & Tisdale.

Southend have major financial problems so Tilson could probably be persuaded.

Mrs Doyle, Hurst says...

Gannon wouldn't come before so can't see him coming now, Tilson has Southend written through him like a stick of rock so can't see him coming unless Southend go fully bust. Adkins and Crosby could be the answer.

can we have a manager who actually runs things, not as we have had before, knight picking sides, and signing players on the word of barry lloyd, we need a contract of quality, ie no one employed at the club should have less than a eufa b badge, doddy just got his eufa a and was given a job at southampton, not on him being a ex player, or has some "banter" with the lads.. club should look at div one, and bottom of championship, having a nice ground means nothing, its time for the club to put real foundations into the way the club operate, from scouting to coaching, the idea slade employed his own scouts, and the chairman had Lloyd is some thing out of a joke book! i would love gus poyet, and IF he agreed peter taylor to come in as coach, then maybe hand the day to day coaching to forster in year or so, move taylor to run the youth set up, maybe get hinsh to run the scouting with lloyd? but its time the jokes came to a end.

Puyet n Taylor would be a very interesting prospect, and, surprisingly, it could work out quite well as I think neither of them would put up with any nonsense and both are good coaches - could be our "Dream Team" for the future.

Lets just sell the new ground now ha?Lets have another toys r us.Most of the above are out of work,or in the non-league for a very good reason. What was the point of sacking RS then?I would give Dowie the job anyway.

Just been on Victor Chandler web page and the lastest bets are as follows Steve Tilson 11/4 and Gus Poyet 9/2 Ian Dowie 12/1 Paul Jewell 20/1 ( but who is 3/1 to get the hull job if brown is sacked on sun/mon.) Think we can forget Jim Gannon as he is doing a good job at Motherwell.
We should have three new people in charge of the team by the Saints game, all we can do as fans get behind them, its down to the board and the Chairman who gets the jobs.
Not worried about the Cup game lets get this sorted out and more on.
Who ever gets the job i wish them the best of luck

Gregory shouldn't come because of his comments about Brighton over Gareth Barry. I can't really see any of the candidates mentioned either wanting to coming or having the necessary to be successful. Why is Gus Poyet even being mentioned, what did he ever do to convince anyone he was any good. Might as well say let's go for Vialli. As for Tony Adams! The guy talks like he's got scrambled egg for brains and from what he did on the training ground at Pompey the players thought so too.

Dowie's no good, you can't have someone who gets released from his contract for family reasons wanting to move back up north, then take on a club 10 miles up the road.

Why would Nigel Adkins want to come down here, he has a job for life at Scunthorpe. It would be a bit like prising Dario Gradi from Crewe.

Curbishley may come, you just never know, he's from the south and whilst having played at Villa and Birmingham, he has played for and managed both West Ham and Charlton, his other club of course being Brighton. I don't see him going to Hull, that will be for Coppell or Jewell, if Brown get's the push.

No-one's mentioned Graham Rix, thank goodness. Steve Cotterill is a possibility and would be ok, probably.

What about George "Stroller" Graham, knocking on a bit now though. Good figurehead working along side a young coach.

Eddie Howe is a good thought and in commuting distance of Bournemouth (just), pairing him up with Peter Taylor (as his no 2) would make for a good mix.

I wonder how long it will be before some chairman thinks of a Clough & Taylor partnership?
Has a ring to it somehow. Where have I heard that partnership before?
Not that I am advocating it. Although Taylor is credited with a League 1 promotion he only took over Mickey Adams' team near the end of the season and which was already going strongly for promotion.
He would make a good coach though, but not a manager and I think he recognises that now. Bit like Wilkins, who was a poor manager but good coach.
(Mrs Doyle has just choked on her tea I expect.)

i would not appoint any of those listed but instead would suggest two others.
Phil Brown, his days at Hull look numbered but remember his form last season, not only did he get some very good results but also the team payed with style.
Paul Jewell, a young manager who has good Premiership experience.

What’s the point of running an argus poll where none of the people to vote for are realistic candidates for the job? Tomorrow you will be telling us in the Argus Nigel Adkins , Gus Poyet , Jim Gannon or Colin Calderwood are the fans favourite for the Albion job when none of them are highly rated by the fans for the Brighton job. You do remember that article on Jim Gannon saying his wife was unwilling to move that far south! You do at least mention some of the realistic contenders

“Other contenders include Steve Cotterill, Iain Dowie, Brentford's Andy Scott, ex-Gillingham chief Andy Hessenthaler, Exeter boss Paul Tisdale and Tony Adams.”

Why was Cotterill not in the poll? He was after all short listed when McGhee was appointed and is according to Steve Claridge desperate to get back into management.

Still the argus is hardly ever taken seriously by Albion fans nowadays due to the poor standard of journalism it portrays.
