Forster given the cold shoulder

ALBION look like fighting the rest of their relegation battle without their leading marksman.

Nicky Forster’s exclusion from the squad is a clear statement of intent by manager Gus Poyet.

Forster will not be back in favour any time soon unless he eats a fairly large slice of humble pie.

‘Fozzygate’ is the first test of Poyet’s man-management and he has exerted his authority in decisive fashion.

If Forster thought he could take advantage of Poyet’s managerial inexperience and manipulate a stand-off over his contract situation to his advantage then he had better think again.

Taking in isolation the issue of whether or not Forster should be awarded a new deal, it is easy to build a case for both parties.

Albion would be in an even bigger mess without the 15 goals he has contributed in 30 games this season.

Poyet, on the other hand, does not know what division the Seagulls will be in next season, by which time the high-earning Forster will be 37.

The manager has not committed himself either way but Forster has interpreted this as an indication he will not be offered a new contract and evidently regards Poyet’s neutral stance as an affront.

He may be right now, because he has probably burnt his bridges with a clumsy attempt to force Poyet’s and the club’s hand.

The baffling part is why, through Sky Sports News, Forster chose to make the matter public on Friday. The timing, the day before a key game in Albion’s safety quest, infuriated Poyet.

If Forster really wanted to leave then he would surely have brought the issue out into the open during, not after, the January transfer window.

Deep down I am sure he wants to stay, so why the rush? Yes, he has a family to feed and bills to pay and would like to know where his future lies, but he was in a position of strength without risking conflict.

Even if it transpired Poyet no longer wanted him there would be plenty of other takers at the end of the season, bearing in mind his goal record.

What part, if any, Forster’s agent Phil Smith has played in all this is unclear but we have been here before.

Remember Bas Savage, George O'Callaghan and Dean Hammond? Back then, with the team doing rather better than they are now, it was chairman Dick Knight’s call on who should be given new contracts and when.

This time it is quite properly the manager’s and Poyet has to balance the short-term imperative of survival with a mid-term desire to build his own squad, one capable of challenging for promotion next season rather than fighting against relegation.

Stretching the unbeaten run away from home in the league to four games was not enough to prevent a return to the drop zone on goal difference.

Albion would have been in an impregnable position by half-time, two goals up and a man up, but for a terrible miss by referee Steve Cook, worse than any errant striker. He denied them a stonewall penalty.

Liam Dickinson, goal side of Ben Chorley from Elliott Bennett’s chip, was bundled over by the Orient centre- half, who should also have been red carded for denying an obvious scoring opportunity.

Poyet was sent-off by Cook for protesting. He is in good company, although the blundering and book-happy Surrey referee’s dismissal of both Tommy Elphick and Colin Hawkins against Stockport earlier in the season had far more validity.

The failure to claim all three points was not entirely down to the officials. The same linesman inactive in the penalty incident was sharp-eyed enough to spot Glenn Murray marginally offside when he flicked in Dickinson’s inviting cross.

That would have maintained Murray’s habit of not just scoring away from home but scoring more than once in the same game after keeper Jamie Jones’ early scuff from an Adam Chambers backpass gifted him a tap-in.

Murray, Andrew Crofts and the outstanding Tommy Elphick all spurned good opportunities in the first half as Albion were predictably made to pay for their profligacy.

The source was predictable too. Scott McGleish, having bounced a header from a Bennett corner against his own crossbar during the Seagulls’ rampant opening 45 minutes, converted at the far post after Jason Demetriou’s indirect free-kick from ten yards had been blocked by a heavily populated wall.

The free-kick was correctly awarded by Cook when Michel Kuipers slipped receiving an Elphick backpass and spontaneously averted the danger with a clearing hand. At least the referee got that one right.

Shame about his earlier shocker. Dickinson said: “It was a blatant penalty. The ref was right behind it. Maybe a couple of players blurred his vision but the linesman was right in line with it.

“That could have been three points for us. Two nil up against ten men, it would have been tough for them to get back into it.

“At the end of the day we have got to get on with it. He made his decision. We stuck at it well and came away with a point. Unfortunately it should have been three. We need to be more clinical in the box. It's great to be back in the side. It has been a frustrating few weeks for me, with Fozzy and Muzza scoring goals and keeping me out. I think I played well and I think I deserve to play again against Huddersfield but that is the gaffer’s choice.”

Indeed it is and that is the way it has to be, even when the talismanic top scorer wants a contract sorted out.

Albion (4-4-2): Kuipers; Calderon, Virgo, Elphick, Painter; Dicker, Crofts, Navarro, Bennett; Murray (Hart 75), Dickinson. Subs not used: Cox, Tunnicliffe, Carole, Hoyte, Brezovan, Holroyd.

Goal: Murray (10).

Yellow cards: Murray (16) foul, Dicker (55) not retreating, Kuipers (61) dissent, Calderon (90) foul.

Leyton Orient(4-4-2): Jones; Purches, Chorley, Mkandawire, Daniels, Adams, Chambers, Thornton, Demetriou, McGleish (Scowcroft 75), Jarvis (Tehoue 67). Subs not used: Morris, Cave-Brown, Pires, Briggs, Smith.

Andy Naylor's made his mind up then, laying the blame firmly at NF's door. If correct, what a messy and depressing end to NF's playing days with BHA. GP has to stand his ground no matter who the player is, the 'tail cannot wag the dog', but a shame nontheless. Step up Dickinson & Holroyd, your time has arrived!

Agree with the above post. What choice did Poyet have? If he gives in and awards Forster a new contract now he would also have to do the same for other high end earners whose contracts also expire this summer or risk a mutiny in the camp. Whether Forster should have a contract or not is not the issue - it is the fact it was brought out into the public eye by the player the day before a game. Contract matters should be conducted behind closed doors.

Footballers renewing their contracts everywhere this Summer are going to have a wake-up call. In the Real World outside of football there is a recession, people have lost jobs, those that still have jobs have taken pay cuts or reduced hours. These are the people/companies/spo

nsors that fund their pay packets. GP/TB need to know what division we are in next season before finalising pay deals. We already have players on our books that other clubs can't afford to take on loan, even on a percentage of their wages here. Could end up with half the squad on Championship level salaries in League 2

Just seen the penalty incident on BBC Sport highlights, I have never in all my born days seen a more obvious one, Poyet should be receiving an an apology not giving one. Pity the ref didn't noticed Kuipers being bundled over for their goal too.

It is shame Forster will be leaving in these circumstances but no player even someone as universally popular as Forster should be able to hold this club to ransom.

Poyet has shown backbone by not given into Nicky’s tantrum and I think this saga has show that behind that big smile and Uruguayan charms is a man who will not stand for any rubbish.

clearly gp could not give in to forster, but why was elabd given a contract ? and for this to come out when the window closed? forstr could have left the club in january, looks like he will be off to one of ten clubs soon.. saints or any london club in div one would have him... god help this club if we get relegated.. does anyone think we will spend £24 to watch elabd and whing hoof the ball? has gus achieved anything other than getting the players fitter than slade did? i cant help wondering where this home form will end, our best player by a mile over the last two seasons , god help us if murray gets injured.

I can see Poyets fix, but why did he give El Abd special treatment?? Surely he knew this would wind up out of contract players? Am I wrong or was El Abd top of our list for departures? I bet this got up NF's nose, especially because he is, even at his age, head and shoulders better. No matter who is right or wrong, the fact remains, we need our most prolific goal scorer since Zamora to be in a BHA shirt tomorrow night.
I hope they can act like adults and sort this out before it's too late. I know this time next year we will be top of the table......I'd just rather it wasn't top of Div 4!

At the end of the day GP is the BOSS same as anyone else who is in employment you do as the BOSS says he is the decission maker, if we loose a game it's the buck stops at the BOSS
if your company fails to deliver the same, that is why they are in CHARGE.And if a 36 year old does not no who the BOSS is he has a big problem.
Well done to GP for standing firm.

I think Adam El Abd contract renewal was Gus making a point. Work hard, train hard and improve and I will reward you. If you don’t then you will fall by the wayside.
NF has got it all wrong on this one; he has totally confused his popularity with his
own importance. Great shame for the fans, club and above all Nicky Forster.

If he goes out on loan there should be 2 stipulations. 1 The loanee club pay ALL his wages not a percentage, and 2 he doesn't play against us. Lets hope he's not thrown all his toys out of the pram, and starts being a disruptive influence. I'm sure he's more professional than that.

We would have been relagated last season without forster, well deserved 18 month contract. The sort of player you need around with the young players in the side.He would still be my captain and if he was at orient i am sure he would have been effective.
Liam Dickinson is great with the ball at his feet going towards goal but seems very static on set pieces and corners.Agreed that gary hart came on a little to late in what was a physical game but could not understand departure of glenn murray. As fans we deserve more,we gave are support saturday now once and for all get this situation sorted.

totally agree with seagull 39,s comment.you should look after your prize assets.ie forster, murray and kuipers.i dont know how long gm and mk contracts are?if they run out in the summer like forsters renew all 3,now.the others can play for there contracts, including el-abd.its a bloody shambles.it needs a manager with man-management skills to sort this mess, not gus and an interpreter.

well to me its so obvious we need NF so badly , he saved our arses last season and is the man to do it this season if allowed to play. To leave him out and get relegated on a point of principal is plain stupid , compromise is the answer. It was plain wrong to give El Abd a contract now , did Gus not think that would **** off the others waiting on a contract?

exactly, why was the boat rocked? elabd wont be plucked by another club, but forster at 36 could take his pick of 10 clubs.. i wont be surprised if he goes to saints with his step son.. whatever anyone says this was badly handled by the club, or gus lack of experience is showing.

whats the harm in giving forster a years contract.he,s been instrumental in keeping the club in div1 last season and will this season.he ,more than any player deserves it.he gives 100% each game.just the type of player needed for the run-in.if theres a breakdown in communication between the 2,dick sort it out ,before we lose our best player.it doesnt look good the pair of them squabbling like teenage girls.

Unfortunately, this stinks of mis-management. You can't award El Abd a contract extension (which I think he deserves) and then ignore the situation with better players. Forster should expect better from the club unless this is just a ploy to get rid of him and save on wages. We don't need to know what division we will be in next year because this obviously had no bearing on the contract with El Abd (presumably on a lot less than Forster). Also, they could put contracts on the table based on us staying in this division and subject to alteration should we be relegated. They could even have a contract that fixes the salary in the event of relegation. They could even state that contracts would be discuss by a certain date but they haven't, they have just said that they are not discussing contracts yet (apart of course for El Abd!). Unfortunately, whilst I support GP, maybe the latin temperment will not allow any compromise with NF and NF himself needs to know where his pay packet is coming from and what it is after the 30th June! Unfortunately I suspect that personalities are getting in the way of common sense.
