Ringmer joint-boss Bob Munnery is not getting carried away despite climbing out of the relegation zone in division one The Blues won 2-0 away to an in-form Crawley Down side who had thrashed East Grinstead 7-0 in the John O’Hara League Cup in midweek.
First-half goals from Jay Sowter and Jo Tubon gave Ringmer the points which lifted them out of the bottom three ahead of Wednesday’s game with fellow strugglers Hailsham.
Munnery said: “It was a good, workmanlike performance and we played some good stuff on a heavy pitch.
“Our back five looked strong and confident and we now move on to the next massive game on Wednesday night.”
Hailsham warmed up for that with an impressive 4-0 win at home to Lingfield thanks to a hat-trick from defender-turned-striker Ben Putland. Gary Brockwell got the other.
Boss Ken McCreadie said: “The best thing about it for me was a clean sheet.
“Someone said afterwards it was the worst hat-trick they have ever seen but I don’t think you can get a bad hat-trick.”
Bottom side Crowborough made it seven points from nine since Dave Adams took over as manager as Jon Trotter scored late on to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Eastbourne United, who had led through Lucas Mann.
Adams said: “They had first half and we just shaded the second half.”
Mile Oak remain second from bottom after a 4-1 defeat at home to Three Bridges, who scored through Stuart O’Hara, Lee Carney with a penalty after Dean Wright had been fouled, Wright and Dean Carden.
Chichester missed the chance to go level with leaders Whitehawk after a 2-1 defeat away to Hassocks.
Ben Vassallo gave Chi a second-minute lead but the hosts fought back through Phil Gault and Daley Clark with his first goal for the club.
Boss Dave John said: “It was a pretty tight game and they are a good side but we seemed to be really up for it.”
Ash Jones was superb at the back as Peacehaven consolidated third spot after a 4-2 win at home to Selsey thanks to Tom Burton (two), Dan Smith and Roy Rook. Andy Brown and Scott Hinshelwood replied.
Assistant boss Terry Hall said: “We are more than pleased with the way things are going. We are a young side but are listening and improving.”
Redhill lost ground after having to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Pagham. Michael Frangou gave the visitors an early lead despite appeals for offside and substitute Carl Morgan levelled five minutes from time with his second goal in as many games since signing.
Boss Marcus Alcindor said: “We keep having all the possession, getting in and around the box and not putting the ball away.”
Shoreham are through to the quarter-finals of the Sussex RUR Cup after beating East Grinstead 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw at East Court.
Musselmen keeper Michael Hunter was the hero with two saves in the shootout. Team-mate Rob Boddy had a penalty saved in normal time while Grinstead had a player sent off in the first half.
Second division Seaford Town held Wick to a 0-0 draw after extra time in the quarter-final of the John O’Hara League Cup.
Wick keeper Alex Bryant made a super save from Chris Stanyard’s 40-yard effort while Adam Laundon made an equally fine stop at the other end.
