Chris Adams believes Murray Goodwin's "world class" performance can help kick-start Sussex's season.

Goodwin made an unbeaten 205 as he batted through the final day to help draw the Championship game against Surrey on Saturday.

Adams, who made an unbeaten 102, hopes the game can be a turning point for the champions who had lost their previous two games by an innings.

He said: "It was back to the Warwickshire game last year when Murray and Mike Yardy batted all day to save a game we were losing.

"We needed a hero to make the headlines and to go through the day losing just one wicket against a good side with was a fantastic effort.

"I'm delighted for Murray. I remember a few years ago when Michael Bevan and I both got hundreds in a one-day match at Chelmsford and Mark Robinson, who was 12th man, ran out and said to me top class innings mate' and five seconds later he said to Bevan world class mate.' "It felt a bit like that on Saturday. Murray's innings was world class and full of shots only players at the very top would play.

"It was the sort of performance you see in Test matches and I'm so pleased for him - if there was a man of the match award he would have stolen it from Mark Ramprakash."

Sussex moved up a place to sixth in the Championship and only Mike Yardy will be missing when they travel to Worcester on Thursday as their injury problems start to ease.

Adams added: "Let's hope it kick-starts our season and gets it back on track. The players have been working so hard and things just haven't gone for us. But it will give us a lot of confidence that, out of a very dire situation, we have got ourselves a draw."

Yardy is still not hitting cricket balls after breaking a finger a month ago and will not play this week but he could be available for the match against Lancashire on May 30.

Adams said: "Yards needs to make sure he is right and won't do any damage by playing too soon. We miss him in the dressing room and in the field but we won't be rushing him back."
