Sussex star turns down IPL

Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright is comfortable with his decision to reject a six-figure offer to play in the Indian Premier League.

The 23-year-old, who plays for England Lions against New Zealand today, was approached by Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to play for Mumbai for the last month of the tournament as a replacement for West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo.

But Wright has joined a growing number of English players who have said no to the IPL in case it jeopardises their international career.

He said: "If the timings were different and it wasn't going to affect my chances of playing for England then it would be something I would seriously have to consider.

"Obviously I was very pleased to be considered for the IPL but at the moment my main focus and priority is playing for my country."

Surrey pair Alistair Brown and Mark Ramprakash, Essex's Ravi Bopara and Sajid Mahmood, of Lancashire, have all turned down approaches from IPL franchises while England contracted players were banned by the ECB from taking part because the tournament clashed with the start of the domestic season.

Hampshire's Dimitri Mascarenhas is the only English player taking part while the ECB is confident their decision to work with Texan billionaire Allen Stanford to stage big-money Twenty20 events at home and in the West Indies next year will placate England's top stars and stop them going to the IPL.

Sussex skipper Chris Adams believes that if Wright continues to make progress, he will eventually get the opportunity to increase his earning power anyway.

Adams said: "The priority for Luke is to cement his place in the England one-day team by continuing to play exciting cricket. If he does that he can be a major league player for the next five to ten years and those opportunities which are available in the IPL will come along.

"We knew nothing about the approach and, in any case, Luke is under contract to Sussex."
