Michel Kuipers has been confirmed as Albion's No. 1 again.

The long-serving Dutchman will be handed the number coveted by goalkeepers once more this season following a two-year break.

Kuipers wore 16 under Mark McGhee during the 2006-07 campaign, with Wayne Henderson and Scott Flinders sharing the one shirt.

He wore 16 again last season, Dean Wilkins pointedly leaving the No. 1 jersey vacant, but Kuipers is getting it back now that Micky Adams is back in charge.

It is a further boost for the 34-year-old fans' favourite after he recently signed a new two-year contract.

Kuipers said: "It's brilliant that the gaffer has given me my number back. It's a great gesture, taking into consideration I had it for six or seven years previously. After playing 54 games last season I think I deserve it."

Meanwhile, Adams is relaxed about the promotion pressure facing him on his return to the club.

He steered the Seagulls to the old Third Division title in 2001 and promotion contention in Division Two.

Now fans are anticipating a push to get back into the Championship.

Adams said: "It took me 12 to 14 months to get it right the first time so is the pressure on? I don't know, you will have to ask other people about that but, given time, I think Albion fans and everyone at the club knows what I am capable of doing.

"If it doesn't happen it doesn't happen but I am nice and relaxed about it. I am not the gung-ho young manager I was when I was here eight or nine years ago. I've got more experience now and I am not fazed by anything."

How important is Michel Kuipers to Albion's plans for this season?

Great to see FDM back wiwth the No. 1 shirt. Mickey can see he was one of our best players last season and isn't going to play the stupid mind games that got DW the boot. MA BLUE AND WHITE ARMY

He should have got player of the season... without him last season i can think we would have been around 17th or worse :S

IMHO he's the best shot stopper in the league. Deservedly number one. Sullivan now needs to up his game to challenge him.

It really don't matter what number he wears, he is one of the best players we have and without a doubt one of the best GK's in the league, should have been player of the season last season

Terence, Brighton says...

Good to see him as no.1, he has never really 100% convinced me, his kicking is very poor and he gets beaten from too many long rangers, but in general he has been a pretty good keeper, my fave in recent times has deffo been Ben Roberts though!

Good shot stopper agreed, but doesn't do the basics well enough for me. poor on crosses & distribution. For such a big guy he doesn't command six yard box well enough and is always blaming his defenders.Flinders is the best ive seen in an Albion shirt in recent times !

I feel I should defend Kuipers' kicking this season. Its has been poor previously but ever since we've taken on a new keeping coach he's been taking a lot more time over his kicking and there has been a huge improvement in my eyes. As for his overall distribution, thats improved too, so many moved are started by his quick throws out to the defence of wingers.
Even if I'm wrong on the kicking side I'd much rather rave a good shot stopper than a good kicker any day of the week.

Scott Flinders who has been told he is surplus to requirements at Smellhurst Park . . .

I thought Ned Flinders was a bit too unpredictable for my liking, he let in a couple of pathetic goals because he was trying to be clever. FDM any day of the week (even with that dodgy Craig David hair he sports)

Tommy T how can you say Flinders was the best goalkeeper he let too many silly goals in. FDM is much better! Well done Kuipers fully deserved!!

I find it difficult to understand why some people think Kuipers is a great goalkeeper. He is fairly good but they obviously do not watch much other football. There are at least seven other keepers in the Championship I can instantly recall who make him look like a park keeper. I lost count of how many times I saw him watching a shot going past which he could have anticipated. Having misjudged it, he then berated the defense. I agree with the guy who said Ben Roberts was the most talented keeper we have had in recent years. Shame about his 'accidents' though.

Brighton have agreed a fee with Colchester United to re-sign Dean Hammond. The fee is £75,000 upfront, with colchester not paying the remaining £125,000 they still owe for hammonds signing in January. Total deal is £225,000.

Adam Virgo was made aware of this signing before he agreed to re-sign for the Albion.

Hammond is due to sign a 3 year contract. However, He will not be re-named captain as this is likely to be split between Virgo, Elphick, and Forster.

£25,000 goes to Hammond as a signing on fee. Hence the £225,000 deal

Still think we need another decent keeper in to push for the gk slot. sullivan just doesnt cut the mustard.

Why have Mayo, Hart and Reid been invited back to pre-season training having been previously released?

The fact that nobody has snapped them up should tell you Adams that they aren't good enough! What the hell you are doing? Isn't the squad large enough and littered with rubbish players already?

Re Sullivan: I don't think he is good enough and should have been released. We need a backup keeper.

Martyn, it occurs to me that Micky wants to see first hand what these players are like without relying on other people's quotes. This way he can do them a favour and also see them in training and make his own mind up. Seems sensible to me. However, I agree that they are past their 'sell-by' with us, but Micky will find out.
Also, M.A. has shown a good piece of man management and motivational skill in giving Kuipers the No.1 shirt, whatever we feel about his capabilities. See how fired up Michel is now? If he gets another keeper later it still doesn't stop him from playing that person instead of Kuipers, if he is better. Isn't it great to have a real manager now?

Gee Jay, says...
9:10pm Wed 2 Jul 08

M.A. has man mangement skills which Taylor, McGee and Wilkins could not get near to. The players are sensing that, he has already got a 'buzz' going on despite the non-atmosphere of Withdean. He has rightly rewarded Michel K. unlike the othere mentioned above.
So far so good Mickey!

the point of looking at mayo reid and hart is a baffling one, when you consider he should have had look at the likes of rents, and cobbs, two young lads with the right manager (adams) and they could have been future players, seems strange looking at these old soaks, while they will give there all in training they wont be the future of the club. as for kuipers he is obviously no 1, as we have a 2o year old with no experience, again why the hell did nt wilkins give sullivan a couple of games last year?

Michel deserves No1 for his displays last season, but we do need an experienced deputy to keep him on his toes.,also if he should be injuried
