Borough 0, Wycombe 1: Chris Zebroski spoiled the party as he scored a late winner to sink Eastbourne Borough at Priory Lane last night.

Borough more than matched their League One opponents in Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood’s testimonial until tiring in the closing stages.

Nathan Crabb and Neil Jenkins both went close for Borough only for rhe visitors to snatch victory when Zebroski tapped home from close range in the 85th minute.

Manager Wilson said: “I thought we kept the ball well in the first half and carved out one or two chances but faded away slightly after the break as their extra fitness told.

“It was a bit of a shame we let in a scrappy goal near the end but the result didn’t really matter.

“The main thing was to continue our preparations for the new season against quality opposition and it was also nice people turned out to show their support for Nick and I.”

The match was a typical pre-season affair with both teams guilty of giving the ball away too frequently.

Borough had the best of the first half but it was the visitors who should have taken the lead in the 20th minute when Matt Harold wastefully shot over afgter being the offside trap.

The home side had to wait until the 27th minute for their first chance when a clever flick from Paul Armstrong set up Matt Smart but his shot was deflected wide.

Wycombe keeper Jamie Young was called into his first serious action five minutes before the break when he pushed a swerving 25-yard shot from Neil Jenkins over the bar.

Wanderers made seven changes at the interval and almost took the lead thanks to two new faces soon after the restart.

Michael Jordan, a half-time replacement for Danny Knowles in goal for Borough, had to turn a shot from Stuart Beavon around a post and then former Albion midfielder Ian Westlake set up Dan Fitchett to head over at the far post.

The best chance of the match fell to Borough in the 66th minute when Liam Enver-Marum pounced on a defensive mistake. He set up fellow substitute Nathan Crabb but the striker delayed his shot too long and his effort was deflected over.

Wanderers took control in the final quarter of an hour and the goal eventually came when Beavon crossed for Zebroski to stab home.

Borough were missing Dan Brown and Dan Smith due to illness while Ben Austin was unavailable but all three are expected to play at AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday.
