Allan Tait admits he may have played his last game for Eastbourne Borough.

The striker signed for Blue Square south outfit Basingstoke for a month yesterday and makes his debut at Hampton and Richmond today.

He is due to return to Priory Lane next month but fears he has no future at the club after playing just once since a training ground bust-up with manager Garry Wilson six weeks ago.

He said: “I honestly don’t know if I have still got a future at Eastbourne. I am just looking forward to going to Basingstoke for a month and then we’ll see what happens.

“I would like to stay as I have been at Borough for two and a half years and it is a good club but I am 27 and need to be playing games.

“It was well documented that I had a disagreement with the gaffer a while ago. I had my opinions about things and he didn’t agree with them. I’ve barely completed a full 90 minutes all season and I put my point of view across and that was it.”

Tait was top scorer with 14 league goals in his first season at Priory Lane after signing from Canvey Island in July 2006.

Injuries prevented him building on that promising start last season but he still played a key role in Borough’s promotion with three goals in the two-legged play-off semi-final against Braintree.

He has managed just two goals in 23 games this season and became a target for abuse from a small minority of Borough fans.

Despite being deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Ashley Barnes, Jeff Goulding and Dan Smith on loan the former Crawley marksman still believes he can do a job in Blue Square premier.

Tait added: “I’ve played at this level before and I haven’t suddenly become a bad player overnight. I believe I am good enough for this level and a lot of people agree with me.

“The problem was we didn’t have enough forwards at the club and it was asking too much for three forwards to play 46 league games at this level when you are part-time. Both Andy (Atkin) and I have physical jobs and you could tell we needed a break, although I wasn’t hoping for such a long break!

“The lads who have come in on loan have freshened things up and that is exactly what we needed but whether they will still be here next month is another question. All I can do is keep myself fit over the next month and try to score some goals so there are no excuses when I come back.”
